Problem Coyotes 3
Often portrayed as villains of cartoons and the wild west, coyotes are sometimes no laughing matter to Kentucky livestock farmers. The "Kentucky Afield" TV show will address the risks and effective measures to deal with the species this weekend, September 22 and 23, on KET. The coyote is one of the most wide-ranging and adaptable of all predators. Over the past 25 years, this canine has expanded its range from the western and plains states throughout all of the eastern US, including Kentucky. This weekend, "Kentucky Afield" TV looks at the natural history and the natural migration of this canine to the commonwealth. As coyote numbers and range continue to expand, Kentucky livestock farmers could experience the occasional problem. Chet Hayes with United Trappers of Kentucky and Bennie Bailey of Kentucky Fur Trappers provide timely advice on trapping the species as the furbearer trapping season approaches its Nov. 12 opener. Viewers will also learn what measures are available to deal with problem coyotes outside of the legal trapping season.

LITTLE THINGS big problems-- Aquatic Invaders
Zebra mussel, quagga mussel, round goby and other invasive species are causing havoc on Lake Michigan. This is causing the food web to become out of balance, and may be causing birds to die. National Park biologist and USGS scientist are trying to figure out what is causing this. Can this mystery be solved before the endangered great lakes piping plover becomes extinct? People can help, clean drain and dry all boating and fishing gear to stop aquatic hitch hikers.

The Vampire Squid - an ancient species faces new dangers in the deep
The vampire squid (Vampyroteuthis infernalis) lives in the deep ocean, home to the largest ecosystems on our planet. A "living fossil," this animal has remained relatively unchanged for hundreds of millions of years. The deep ocean contains what may be the greatest number of animal species, the greatest biomass, and the greatest number of individual organisms in the living world. Humans have explored the deep ocean for about 150 years, and most of what is known is based on studies of the deep seafloor. In contrast, the water column above the deep seabed comprises more than 90% of the living space, yet less than 1% of this biome has been explored. The deep pelagic biota is the largest and least-known major faunal group on Earth despite its obvious importance at the global scale. Pelagic species represent an incomparable reservoir of biodiversity. Although we have yet to discover and describe the majority of these species, the threats to their continued existence are numerous and growing. Conserving deep pelagic biodiversity is a problem of global proportions that has never been addressed comprehensively. The potential effects of these threats include the extensive restructuring of entire ecosystems, changes in the geographical ranges of many species, large-scale elimination of taxa, and a decline in biodiversity at all scales. This review provides an initial framework of threat assessment for confronting the challenge of conserving deep pelagic biodiversity; and it ...

MC Frontalot - Origin Of Species (read descripton)
This is a response to "This should keep Us All Thinking By nat21paris" just to show that some christians push their religion on people and can be just as biased as the fictional atheist proffessor in the story. It's sort of social satire that I just find hilarious but a lot of it is true about some crazy fundamentalists. example: "brought by the one true God, It's a fact: anybody else who ever had a God, their God's wack" I put the lyrics here too in case you couldn't read some of the more illegible lettering in the video. Lyrics from sweetslyrics.com Congregation, settle in your seats. The Reverend Front Aloud is on the mic and about to speak. I'm about to freak you out, make you shiver in the pew while I'm delivering to you my sermon and divinity ensues, brought by the one true God. It's a fact: anybody else who ever had a God, their God's wack. We ain't got to worry about 'em; we picked the right horse. You're in the right house of worship (of course), and forces are gathering out in the world to diminish our faith in ways radical and thorough, to discourage us from loving anything that's immaterial, to tempt our children with ever fruitier cereal, and worst of all, to call us idiots while they do it. My congregation, listen; I'm about to walk you through it. We're going to take the nation back from the heathens that's within it. We're gonna get the most egregious of the atheists imprisoned, cause a schism while we're at it, but emerge on top, and once we've purified ...

Florida Everglades: Monster Snakes
Big snakes in the Everglades are posing a big problem. With no natural predators pythons not only compete with native panthers and alligators for food, but they also prey on endangered species like storks and wood rats. Pythons are an invasive species that are often dumped by pet owners in the national park once they grow too big. Others are escapees from nearby reptile farms where breeders nationwide have raised as many as 1 million of these giant snakes since 1980. An equal number have been imported from overseas. To help get rid of big snakes the Florida Fish and Wildlife Preservation Commission is letting sportsmen hunt pythons on 700000 acres of state land next to the Everglades National Park.

Baby Tiger Cub to Save its Entire Species
Conservation Efforts: Poaching for fur and destruction of habitat have greatly reduced tiger populations in the wild. At the start of the 20th century, it is estimated there were over 100000 tigers in the world but the population has dwindled to between 1500 and 3500 in the wild. Some estimates suggest that there are less than 2500 mature breeding individuals, with no subpopulation containing more than 250 mature breeding individuals. India: India is home to the world's largest population of tigers in the wild. According to the World Wildlife Fund, of the 3500 tigers around the world, 1400 are found in India. Only 11% of original Indian tiger habitat remains, and it is becoming significantly fragmented and often degraded. A major concerted conservation effort, known as Project Tiger, has been underway since 1973, initially spearheaded by Indira Gandhi. The fundamental accomplishment has been the establishment of over 25 well-monitored tiger reserves in reclaimed land where human development is categorically forbidden. The program has been credited with tripling the number of wild Bengal tigers from roughly 1200 in 1973 to over 3500 in the 1990s. However, a tiger census carried out in 2007, whose report was published on February 12, 2008, stated that the wild tiger population in India declined by 60% to approximately 1411. It is noted in the report that the decrease of tiger population can be attributed directly to poaching. Following the release of the report, the Indian ...

The Real Problem with Government
For several millennia mankind has labored to design a system of government to adequately host its masses. We have sought a means that can accurately represent the most people within reasonable standards of efficacy given the basic constraints of capital and bureaucratic resources, among other logistic challenges. We have attempted to craft a structure in which people can govern themselves, and have been just as effective in doing so as one could expect to be in a desperate effort to construct a daycare center where children watch over, educate, and discipline themselves. No system of government forged by man has yet been capable of serving the grand majority while acknowledging that minority ideals which are unpopular are often slivers of genius or even grandiose common sense fledging before their time. Our species' failure to master such an integral piece of society despite ages of progress in other fields is not entirely to be shouldered by history's political architects. They have been asked to design a spacious room that is comfortable in temperature to both a polar bear and a lion, while simultaneously designing the room to keep those two beasts from quarreling without impeding on their freedom to quarrel by use of any physical constraints or barriers. Can we fault them for their consistent failure to produce satisfactory results? A litany of systems have been tested, but our hyper sensitive communal tastes have spit them out through the ages like a spoiled food ...
