I came across this fantastic house during one of my winter road trips. It was a total random find.
Walking up to the house was a challenge in itself as the snow was up to my thighs. Once I traversed the showy terrain , access was easy.
While I don't know any history of the house the brick work tells me it was at least 1900-1920ish with an addition at some point. Electrical and heating upgrades were obvious. The condition of the house makes me feel it was abandoned many many years ago, but some of the artifacts that were left behind seemed to be in such good shape, maybe someone brought "junk" into the house after it was left to rot.
The previous dwellers liked their colors that's for sure, and one thing that gave me pause for such a classic house was the drop ceiling in the main floor room, not my first choice of finish. The door to no where on the upper level may have lead to a balcony a long time back, but it long gone now.
The artifacts were very cool, books, photos, small appliances and more, but the piano was my favorite. Overall, a great find and a great explore.

District Municipality of Muskoka
The District Municipality of Muskoka, more generally referred to as the District of Muskoka or Muskoka, is a Regional Municipality located in Central Ontario, Canada. Muskoka extends from Georgian Bay in the west, to the northern tip of Lake Couchiching in the south, to the western border of Algonquin Provincial Park in the east. Located approximately a two-hour car drive north of Toronto, Muskoka spans 6,475 km2 (2,500 sq mi). Muskoka has some 1,600 lakes, making it a popular cottaging destination.
This region, which, along with Haliburton, Kawartha Lakes, and Peterborough County is referred to as "cottage country", sees over 2.1 million visitors annually. Muskoka is a scenic area sprinkled with picturesque villages and towns, farming communities, and lakeside vacation hotels and resorts near to golf courses, country clubs, and marinas. The regional government seat is Bracebridge and the largest population centre is Huntsville.
The name of the municipality derives from a First Nations chief of the 1850s. Lake Muskoka was then the hunting grounds of a band led by Chief Yellowhead or Mesqua Ukie. He was revered by the government, who built a home for him in Orillia where he lived until his death at the age of 95.

I came across this fantastic house during one of my winter road trips. It was a total random find.
Walking up to the house was a challenge in itself as the snow was up to my thighs. Once I traversed the showy terrain , access was easy.
While I don't know any history of the house the brick work tells me it was at least 1900-1920ish with an addition at some point. Electrical and heating upgrades were obvious. The condition of the house makes me feel it was abandoned many many years ago, but some of the artifacts that were left behind seemed to be in such good shape, maybe someone brought "junk" into the house after it was left to rot.
The previous dwellers liked their colors that's for sure, and one thing that gave me pause for such a classic house was the drop ceiling in the main floor room, not my first choice of finish. The door to no where on the upper level may have lead to a balcony a long time back, but it long gone now.
The artifacts were very cool, books, photos, small appliances and more, but the piano was my favorite. Overall, a great find and a great explore.

Next week I’m going to hit the road and head to the cottage. Not the same-day, mad dash back-and-forth with furniture that happens sometimes in spring, but the make-a-list, pack the bags, fill up the tank trek that means I’m going to stay put for a bit ... It’s not a palatial Muskoka spread like you see in the magazines; there is no danger of Goldie Hawn bumping into some NHLer off the end of our dock ... I don’t think Goldie has to do that ... ....

But I was surprised to see a booth set up in little Dorset, Ontario by Muskoka Roastery, the local roaster in cottage country north of Toronto, displaying what they call a 100 percent compostable Keurig compatible coffee pod ... But up here in Muskoka, a lot of people compost themselves, since you have to carry everything to the dump and they count every bag ... And Muskoka Roastery deserves credit for making the effort....
