Prehistoric cultures began developing on Bulgarian lands during the Neolithic period. Its ancient history was marked by the presence of the Thracians, and later by the Greeks and Romans. The emergence of a unified Bulgarian ethnicity and state dates back to the First Bulgarian Empire, which dominated most of the Balkans and functioned as a cultural hub for Slavic peoples during the Middle Ages. With the downfall of the Second Bulgarian Empire in 1396, its territories came under Ottoman rule for nearly five hundred years. The Russo-Turkish War of 1877–1878 resulted in the Third Bulgarian State, recognised in 1908. The following years saw several conflicts with its neighbours, which prompted Bulgaria to align with Germany in both World Wars. In 1946 it became a Communist republic with a single-party system until 1989, when the Communist Party allowed multi-party elections. After 1990 Bulgaria transitioned to democracy and a market-based economy.

Cuba

Cuba remained a territory of Spain until the Spanish–American War ended in 1898, and gained formal independence from the U.S. in 1902. A fragile democracy, increasingly dominated by radical politics eventually evolved, solidified by the Cuban Constitution of 1940, but was definitely quashed in 1952 by former president Fulgencio Batista, and an authoritarian regime was set up, intensifying and catalyzing already rampant corruption, political repression and crippling economic regulations.Batista was ousted in January 1959 by the July 26 movement, and a new administration under Fidel Castro established, which had by 1965 evolved into a single-party state under the revived Communist Party of Cuba, which holds power to date.

Czechoslovakia
Czechoslovakia or Czecho-Slovakia (Czech and Slovak: Československo, Česko-Slovensko) was a sovereign state in Central Europe which existed from October 1918, when it declared its independence from the Austro-Hungarian Empire, until 1992. From 1939 to 1945, the state did not de facto exist because of its forced division and partial incorporation into Nazi Germany, but the Czechoslovak government-in-exile nevertheless continued to exist during this period. In 1945, the eastern part of Carpathian Ruthenia was taken over by the Soviet Union. On 1 January 1993, Czechoslovakia peacefully split into the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Under Varangians rule, the city became a capital of the Rus', the first East Slavic state. Completely destroyed during the Mongol invasion in 1240, the city lost most of its influence for the centuries to come. The country's tourism sector is also growing. South Africa is Mozambique's main trading partner and source of foreign direct investment. Portugal, Spain, and Belgium are also among the country's most important partners. Since 2001 Mozambique is one of the world's top ten for annual average GDP growth. The town centre rests on a small hilltop, commanding a wide plain at the southern edge of an ancient lake. The area is now the fertile basin of the Velino River. Only the small Ripasottile and Cantalice lakes remain of the original large one.
Reate was originally a major site of the Sabine nation. After the Roman conquest, carried out by Manius Curius Dentatus in late 3rd century BC, the village became a strategic point in the early Italian road network, dominating the "salt" track (known as Via Salaria) that linked Rome to the Adriatic Sea through the Apennines.
Curius Dentatus drained a large portion of the lake by making the Velino a distributary of the Nera river. The wide area once occupied by the lake turned into a fertile plain. Following Roman customs, the land was split into characteristic square allotments. The town itself underwent significant development, being re-organised according to typical Roman urbanistic standards (e.g., two orthogonal roads make up the settlement's backbone), and was fortified with strong walls. A stone bridge was laid across the Velino river, and a large viaduct was built to bring goods from the Salaria road directly to Rieti's southern door.

Stellenbosch
Stellenbosch ( /ˈstɛlənbɒs/) is a town in the Western Cape province of South Africa, situated about 50 kilometres (31 mi) east of Cape Town, along the banks of the Eerste River. It is the second oldest European settlement in the province, after Cape Town. The town became known as the City of Oaks or Eikestad in Afrikaans and Dutch due to the large number of oak trees that were planted by its founder, Simon van der Stel, to grace the streets and homesteads.
Stellenbosch has its own municipality (incorporating the neighbouring towns of Pniel and Franschhoek), adjoining the greater/metro area of the city of Cape Town. The town is home to Stellenbosch University. Technopark is a modern science park situated on the southern side of the town near the Stellenbosch Golf Course.
The town was founded in 1679 by the Governor of the Cape Colony, Simon van der Stel, who named it after himself — Stellenbosch means "(van der) Stel's forest". It is situated on the banks of the Eerste Rivier ("First River"), so named as it was the first new river he reached and followed when he went on an expedition over the Cape Flats to explore the territory towards what is now known as Stellenbosch. The people of Sudan have a long history extending from antiquity which is intertwined with the history of Egypt. Sudan suffered seventeen years of civil war during the First Sudanese Civil War (1955–1972) followed by ethnic, religious and economic conflicts between the Muslim Arab northern Sudanese and the mostly animist and Christian Nilotes of Southern Sudan. This led to the Second Sudanese Civil War in 1983. Because of continuing political and military struggles, Sudan was seized in a bloodless coup d'état by colonel Omar al-Bashir in 1989, who thereafter proclaimed himself President of Sudan. The civil war ended with the signing of a Comprehensive Peace Agreement which granted autonomy to what was then the southern region of the country. Following a referendum held in January 2011, South Sudan seceded on 9 July 2011 with the consent of Sudan's President al-Bashir.

Abubaker Kaki Khamis (born 21 June 1989) is a Sudanese runner who specializes in the 800 metres. He is a two-time World Indoor Champion over the distance and also won gold at the 2007 All-Africa Games. He represented Sudan at the 2008 Summer Olympics. He is one of the fastest runners in Africa and in the world .
In February 2008 he ran a world leading 2:15.7 in the 1000 m indoors in Sweden. On March 9, 2008 in Valencia, Kaki became the youngest ever World Indoor champion after winning the 800 m final at age 18 years and 262 days. On June 6, 2008 he won the Bislett Games Golden League meeting in Oslo by running 1:42.69, a new world junior record. The previous record (1:43.64) was set by Japheth Kimutai of Kenya in 1997. The following month he entered the 2008 World Junior Championships in Athletics as the 800 m favourite. He was closely followed by Geoffrey Kibet in the final but he managed to pull clear on the final straight to win the gold medal.
Kaki finished 8th in the third semi-final for the 800 m and did not advance to the final at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. In the 2009 World Championships in Berlin he tripped in the semi-final, and did not complete the race.

Alberto Juantorena
Alberto Juantorena Danger (born 3 December 1950) is a Cuban former track athlete, famed for his 9 foot stride length. At the 1976 Summer Olympics, he became the first and so far only athlete to win both the 400 and 800 m Olympic titles.
Born in Santiago de Cuba, as a 6 foot 2 inch 14 year old, Juantorena was first considered a potential star at basketball and was sent to a state basketball school. A taleneted athlete at many sports, he had been regional high-school champion at 800 and 1500 m, but his true talent at athletcs was discovered by a Polish track coach, Zygmunt Zabierzowski, who convinced him to start running seriously. Juantorena was ready for the change because as he states himself he was a 'bad' basketball player and his idol when young was an athlete, the Cuban sprinter Enrique Figuerola. Only a year later, Juantorena was eliminated in the semi-finals of the 400 m event at the Munich Olympics (1972).
Juantorena became better known in the next years, winning a gold medal at the World University Games (1973) and a silver at the 1975 Pan American Games, both in the 400 m. He was unbeaten in 1973 and 1974, but underwent two operations on his foot in 1975. He only seriously took up running the 800 m in 1976, so few thought he was a candidate for the Olympic gold that year. His coach, Zabierzowski, had initially tricked him in to trying an 800 race by convincing him the other runners need a pacemaker. However, Juantorena made it to the Olympic final, and led the field for most of the race, eventually winning in a world record time of 1:43.50. He was the first non-English speaking athlete to win Olympic gold in this event. Three days later, he also won the 400 m final, setting a low-altitude world record of 44.26. By winning the 400 m, he became the first athlete since Paul Pilgrim at the 1906 Intercalated Games to do such a double at an Olympic sports event, and was the first to do so at an officially recognised Olympics.

Ana Fidelia Quirot
Ana Fidelia Quirot (born March 23, 1963 in Palma Soriano) is a female athlete from Cuba, who specialised in the 800 m but was also successful over 400 m.
Quirot won a silver medal at the 1991 IAAF World Championships in Athletics and a bronze medal in the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona. However the following year she was involved in a horrific domestic accident that left her seriously injured. She was pregnant at the time and gave birth to her daughter prematurely in hospital while fighting for her life. Her daughter did not survive and died a week after she was born.
She returned from her accident in late 1993 and won a silver medal in the Central America Games, behind the Surinam athlete Letitia Vriesde. She had international success in the following years too: she won a gold medal at the 1995 IAAF World Championships in Athletics in Sweden and again in 1997 in Athens. She also won a silver at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta.
She is one of only a handful of female athletes who have run under 1 minute and 55 seconds for 800 m: her best time of 1:54.44 was set when winning the IAAF World Cup in Barcelona in 1989 and she also ran 1:54.82 to beat Maria de Lurdes Mutola in a Grand Prix race in Cologne in 1997. Her personal best time ranks her as the fourth fastest 800 m runner of all time. Her personal best for 400 m is 49.61. She also holds the world best for the unofficial distance of 600 metres.

André Bucher
André Bucher (born 19 October 1976 in Neudorf, Switzerland) is a retired Swiss 800 metres runner. He is best known for winning the gold medal at the 2001 World Championships in Edmonton in his event. Bucher also won the indoor bronze that same year.
Bucher won two European Championship silver medals in 1998, 2002 and also silver at the 2002 Indoor. Other achievements include finishing third at the 2003 IAAF World Athletics Final.
At the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney a medal was possibly chiselled out of him when he was barged by his competitor Andrea Longo. While Bucher finished the race in fifth place, Longo was later disqualified.
On 17 August 2001, Bucher posted a personal best of 1:42.55 minutes in the 800 meters. That time currently ranks him as the 9th fastest athlete in history. On that race, he beat the young Yuriy Borzakovskiy by a decent margin. The week after, Borzakovskiy would post the time that currently makes him 8th fastest in history.
Bucher retired in May 2007 due to a long-term heel injury.

Benson Koech
Benson Koech (born November 10, 1974) is a Kenyan middle distance runner best known for his achievements as a young athlete. He won the gold medal at the 1992 World Junior Championships over 800m in a time of 1:44.77 min. He also won a silver medal over 800m at the 1995 IAAF World Indoor Championships. Koech set his personal best at 1:43.17 min (ranked No.1 in the world 1994) in Rieti. He retired after the 2001 season.

Billy Konchellah
Billy Komintai Konchellah (born 20 October 1961 in Kilgoris, Kenya) is a former 800 m runner who won two World Championship gold medals in Rome 1987 and Tokyo 1991.
His victory in the 1991 final was unexpected. He sprinted past Paul Ereng and Jose Luiz Barbosa on the final straight. In 1993 Konchellah made an unexpected comeback when he won the B-race at the meeting in Zurich. He travelled to the World Championships in Stuttgart and looked strong in the heats and semi-finals. However, in the final he lacked the finishing kick that had earned him the gold medal in Tokyo two years before. The race was won by Paul Ruto and Konchellah finished third. Konchellah never won an Olympic medal as he suffered from asthma for long periods of his career which prevented him from entering the 1988 and 1992 Olympic Games. In the 800 m final at the 1984 Summer Olympics he had finished fourth. Konchellah's World Championships record of 1:43.06 min (1987) is still unbroken. He also won 800 metres race in the 1987 All-Africa Games held in Kenya.

Caster Semenya
Mokgadi Caster Semenya (born 7 January 1991) is a South African middle-distance runner and world champion. Semenya won gold in the women's 800 metres at the 2009 World Championships with a time of 1:55.45 in the final.
Following her victory at the 2009 World Championships, it was announced that she had been subjected to "gender testing". She was withdrawn from international competition until 6 July 2010 when the IAAF cleared her to return to competition. In 2010, the British magazine New Statesman included Semenya in a list of "50 People That Matter 2010".
Semenya returned to the 2011 World Championships where she achieved the silver medal in the 800 metres.
Semenya was born in Ga-Masehlong, a village in South Africa near Pietersburg (now Polokwane), and grew up in the village of Fairlie, "deep in South Africa's northern Limpopo province." She has three sisters and a brother, and is said to have been a tomboy as a child.
Semenya attended Nthema Secondary School and now attends the University of Pretoria as a sports science student. She began running as training for soccer.

Dave Wottle
David ("Dave") James Wottle (born August 7, 1950) is a former American athlete. He was the winner of the 800 meter run at the 1972 Summer Olympics. He is perhaps, however, best known for wearing a golf cap while running.
Dave was born in Canton, Ohio, and attended Bowling Green State University. During his childhood he was very slim and feeble, so that the family doctor told him that he needed to do something to strengthen himself, such as running. The young boy took this advice and started to run. At the university he finished second to Marty Liquori in the mile run at the 1970 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. During the 1971 season he was hampered by injuries, but a year later in 1972 he won the 1,500 m at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, and at the 1973 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships he won the mile run in a time of 3:57.1, an NCAA record that still stands today (1975 was the last year the mile was contested at the NCAA's outdoor meet).
Leading up to the 1972 Olympic Games, he won the AAU 800 meter title before equaling the world record over 800 meters of 1:44.3 at the US Olympic Trials. In the Olympic 800 meter final, Wottle immediately dropped to the rear of the field, and stayed there for the first 500 m, at which point he started to pass runner after runner up the final straight, finally grabbing the lead in the final stretch to win by just 0.03 seconds. (Also noted is that each 200M split was 26.X, a perfect display of even splits throughout a race). This gained him the nickname of "The Head Waiter". (Another nickname was "the Throttle".) At the victory ceremony, Wottle forgot to remove his golf cap during the playing of the national anthem. This was interpreted by some as a form of protest, but Wottle later apologized.

David Rudisha
David Lekuta Rudisha (born 17 December 1988) is a Kenyan middle distance runner and world record holder in the 800 metres with a time of 1:41.01. Rudisha holds four of the ten fastest times for this event.
Born in Kilgoris, Trans Mara District, Rudisha went to St. Francis, Kimuron Secondary School in Iten, Keiyo District, which is known for nurturing several top runners. Initially he was a 400 metres runner, but his coach, Colm O’Connell, prompted him to try 800 metres. In 2006 he became the world junior champion over that distance.
Rudisha competed at the 2009 World Athletics Championships, reaching the 800 metres semifinals. In September 2009, Rudisha won the IAAF Grand Prix meeting in Rieti, Italy, posting a new African record of 1:42.01, beating the 25-year old record of 1:42.28 set by compatriot Sammy Koskei. That effort put him in fourth place on the all-time list. In the 2010 IAAF Diamond League, he took on Abubaker Kaki at the Bislett Games in June. He defeated Sebastian Coe's 31-year-old meet record with a run of 1:42.04, giving him another place in the top-ten fastest ever 800 m and leaving Kaki the consolation of the fastest ever non-winning time. On 10 July 2010, Rudisha ran the 800 m in 1:41.51 at the KBC Night of Athletics in Heusden, Belgium; this new personal record placed him #2 all-time in the world for the 800 m.

Doina Melinte
Doina Ofelia Melinte (Romanian pronunciation: [ˈdojna meˈlinte]; born December 27, 1956 in Bacău, Bacău County) is a retired Romanian athlete.
She won gold medals over 1500 metres at the European Indoor Championships in 1985, 1988 and 1990, the latter race even being a European record time with 4:00.27. On the same day she set another new European record with 4:17.14 over the distance of 1 mile.
At the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles she won a gold medal in 800 meters ahead of Kim Gallagher (silver) and countrywoman Fiţa Lovin (bronze) as well as the silver medal in 1500 meters behind Gabriella Dorio (gold) and ahead of another Romanian, Maricica Puică (Bronze).
She continued to win a 1500 m bronze medal at the 1986 European Championships, and a year later she set a new championship record with 4:05.68 at the 2nd World Indoor Championships and finished third at the outdoor World Championships. She defended her World Indoor title in 1989, winning in a championship record of 4:04.79.

Donald Paige
Donald ("Don") Paige (born October 13, 1956 in Baldwinsville, New York) is a retired middle distance runner from the United States, who set the world best year performance in the men's 800 metres in 1980. Paige ran 1:44.53 on 23 June 1980 in Eugene, Oregon, U.S. After the U.S. boycotted 1980 Olympic Games, he defeated Olympic gold medalist Sebastian Coe by 0.03 seconds in an 800 meter race in Via Reggio, Italy and was later ranked number one in the world for the 800m in 1980 by Track & Field News magazine. His personal best in the same event came three years later: 1:44.29, achieved on 4 September 1983 in Rieti, Lazio, Italy.
In 1979 Paige ran an indoor American Record of 2:20.3 for 1000m and a few months later ran a personal best of 3:54.6 for the mile. In June he pulled off a rare 800m/1500m double at the NCAA championships, becoming only the third man to win both events after Ron Delany (1958) and Ross Hume (1945). (In the 800, run only 35 minutes after the 1500m final, he ran a rare negative split race of 54.3/51.9, while in the 1500 he closed his last lap in a swift 53.7, the last 200 being covered in 26.2 seconds.) Two weeks later Paige ran a personal best for the 1500 of 3:37.4, good for 10th place on the all-time U.S. list at that time, in finishing second to Steve Scott at the AAU championships.

Ellen Gezina Maria van Langen (born February 9, 1966 in Oldenzaal, Overijssel) is a former Dutch middle distance runner. Van Langen has a degree in economics at the University of Amsterdam. Before she started running, she played football.
At the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, she won the Olympic title in the 800 m in a time of 1:55.54, a time which remained her personal best. She finished second and was selected for the Kenyan team, but failed to reach the final of 800 metres competition in World Youth Championships held in Bydgoszcz, Poland.
In 2000 she won two gold medals at national secondary school championships, the events were 400 metres hurdles and 800 metres. At the East Africa Youth Championships held in the same year she won 400 metres hurdles while at 800 metres she finished second.

Joaquim Cruz
Joaquim Carvalho Cruz (born March 12, 1963 in Taguatinga, DF) is a former Brazilian athlete, winner of the 800 m at the 1984 Summer Olympics. He is one of only four men to run the 800 m in less than 1:42.
Cruz was born in Taguatinga, in Distrito Federal. As the son of a steel worker, he began running as a 13-year-old, and soon showed astonishing talent as a junior. At the age of only 15 his personal best over 800 m stood at 1:51 min. After setting a junior world record of 1:44.3 min in 1981, he received a scholarship for the University of Oregon in 1983. The move immediately paid off, and Cruz won the NCAA championships over 800 m that same year. He also competed in the inaugural World Championships in 1983, winning the bronze.
The following year, Cruz became one of only a handful of people to win the 800m/1500 m double at the 1984 NCAA Track & Field Championships (a feat that would not be repeated for another 26 years until another Oregon Duck, Andrew Wheating, turned the trick in 2010). Later that summer, he ran a time of 2:14.09 min over 1000 m in Nice which is still the current South American record over that distance.

John ("Johnny") Lee Gray, Jr. (born June 19, 1960 in Los Angeles, California) was an American 800 m runner of the late 1980s and early 1990s. In 1985 he set the US record of 1:42.60 at a meet in Koblenz. That time puts Gray as the #11 performer of all time. He came seventh in the 1984 Summer Olympics, fifth in 1988, and won the bronze medal at the Barcelona Olympics of 1992. In 1993 Gray was one of the favourites to win a gold medal at the World Championships in Stuttgart as he had won the A-race at the prestigious meeting in Zurich. However, he failed to qualify for the final in Stuttgart. He also set a world 600 m best in 1986 at 1:12.81.
In 1992 and 1993 Gray came close to breaking the world indoor record over 800 m several times. He holds the US indoor record at 1:45.00 (Sindelfingen 1992).
Having led the Olympic 800 m race at the 1992 Summer Olympics with a blazing first lap at better than world record pace, Gray was passed twice during the final lap to claim the bronze medal. A reporter later asked him what he would have done differently if he could run the race a second time, and it is rumored that he responded, "I would have taken it out harder." Runners refer to such an attitude as "taking it to the Gray zone" in his honor. This tactic also resulted in some devastating failures as in the 1987 and 1993 World Championships when he jogged to the finish of quarterfinal races, depleted and defeated. He walked to the finish of the 1980 Olympic Trials.

Jolanda Čeplak
Jolanda Čeplak pronounced (help·info) (born Jolanda Steblovnik, September 12, 1976) is a Slovenian middle distance athlete. She was born in Celje and lived in Velenje until moving to Monaco.
In her early career, she did not specialise, and ran at many distances. She later settled on the 800 metres where she found relative success on the IAAF Golden League circuit, despite having to compete against Maria de Lurdes Mutola, who went unbeaten at all major championships from 1999 until the 2004 Summer Olympics.
Her most successful season was 2002. On March 2 at the European Indoor Championships in Vienna she beat local favourite Stephanie Graf and set the indoor world record at 1:55.82. In the same year at the European Championships in Munich she became the European champion.
At the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Čeplak finished very strongly in the 800 m but could not quite catch winner Kelly Holmes and finished with exactly the same time as Hasna Benhassi. A photo-finish showed her in third-place, winning the bronze medal.

Ken Swenson
Kenneth ("Ken") Lloyd Swenson (born April 18, 1948 in Clay Center, Kansas) is a retired middle distance runner from the United States, who represented his native country at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, West Germany.
Swenson is best known for winning the gold medal in the men's 800 metres event at the 1971 Pan American Games in Cali. He won the 880y in 1970 at both the NCAA and AAU Meets. He competed for Kansas State University and later for the US Army.

Marcello Fiasconaro
Marcello Luigi Fiasconaro (born July 19, 1949) is an Italian-South African athlete, who in 1973 set a world record in the 800 m.
Born in Cape Town to an Italian father and South African mother, Fiasconaro spent his youth in this South African coastal city.
His father, Gregorio, was born in Castelbuono, Sicily. A pilot for Italy during World War II, the elder Fiasconaro was shot down over East Africa and taken to South Africa as a prisoner of war. He married Mabel Marie, a South African woman from Pietermaritzburg, and settled in Cape Town, where he was appointed professor of music at the University of Cape Town.
Marcello Fiasconaro's first passion was rugby. After playing for the Villagers Rugby Club in Cape Town, he was selected for the Western Province under 20 team.
He only switched to athletics at the age of 20. Fiasconaro discovered his running talent after the president of the Celtic Harriers Running Club at the time, Stewart Banner, suggested that the rugby team train with his runners to get fit. Banner became Fiasconaro's trainer.

Mbulaeni Mulaudzi
Mbulaeni Tongai Mulaudzi (born September 8, 1980 in Muduluni, Limpopo Province) is a South African middle distance runner, and the 2009 world champion in the men's 800 metres. He carried the flag at the opening ceremony of the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece for his native country. He became South Africa's first black athlete to be ranked number one in the world.
His first international medal was a silver at the 2000 African Championships in Athletics. He competed at the 2001 World Championships in Athletics and finished sixth in his first global final. At his first Commonwealth Games, Mulaudzi was first past the finish line to become the 2002 Commonwealth champion in the 800 m. He won a bronze medal at the 2003 World Championships the following year, in addition to a silver medal from the 2003 All-Africa Games.
He came to prominence in 2004, when he won at the World Indoor Championships and reached the podium at the 2004 Athens Olympics to win an Olympic silver medal. At the 2006 World Indoor Championships he won a silver medal, and he repeated the feat two years later at the 2008 edition. He represented South Africa at the 2008 Beijing Olympics but was knocked out of the 800 m at the semi-final stage.

Mike Boit
Mike Boit (Michael Kipsubut Boit; (born 1 June 1949) is a Kenyan former middle distance athlete whose career spanned fifteen years. He is presently a professor at Kenyatta University in the Department of Exercise and Sports Science.
Boit graduated from St. Patrick's High School in Iten in 1969, a school well known for having produced such world class distance runners as Matthew Birir, Wilson Kipketer, Japheth Kimutai and many others. Boit received a Diploma from Kenyatta College (now Kenyatta University) in 1972, a Bachelors Degree from Eastern New Mexico University in 1976, two Masters Degrees from Stanford University in 1977 and 1978, and a Doctoral of Education Degree from the University of Oregon in 1986.
Boit joined the Kenyatta University as a full time faculty member in 1987. From 1990 to 1997, Boit took leave of his position at the University to work as the Kenya Commissioner of Sports; Boit returned to Kenyatta University in 1998.
During the 1990s, Boit also stayed active in the athletic community as member of the IAAF Athletes Commission from 1989 to 1999 and the Special Olympics from 1992-1995.

Nadezhda Olizarenko
Nadezhda Fyodorovna Olizarenko (Russian: Надежда Фёдоровна Олизаренко; born 28 November 1953 in Bryansk, Bryansk Oblast) is a retired athlete, who competed mainly in the 800 metres. She represented the Soviet Union.
Olizarenko competed for Soviet Union in the 1980 Summer Olympics held in Moscow, Russia, in the 800 metres, where she won the gold medal ahead of country women Olga Mineyeva and Tatyana Providokhina for a Soviet clean sweep of the medals. This added to the bronze medal she won in the 1500 metres at the same games.
In 1980 Olizarenko set a world record and also her personal best over 800 metres with 1:53.43; this record stood until 1983, when it was bettered by Jarmila Kratochvílová. As of 2010[update], it is still the all-time number two mark in women's 800 metres. She won the gold medal in the 800 metres at the 1986 European Championships in Athletics.

Nixon Kiprotich
Nixon Kiprotich (born December 4, 1962 in Baringo) is a former Kenyan 800 metres runner, who won the silver medal at the 1992 Olympic Games. Previously, Kiprotich had come eighth in the 1988 Olympic final.
He finished 3rd at the 1989 IAAF World Cup 800 metres race. In 1989 he had won the African Championships and in 1990 he came second in the Commonwealth Games. During the summer of 1992 Kiprotich won several Grand Prix meetings where he defeated William Tanui to whom he lost in the Olympic final. Kiprotich was ranked No.1 in the world over 800m in 1993.

Olaf Beyer
Olaf Beyer (born August 4, 1957 in Grimma) was an East German 800 metres runner who won the gold medal at the 1978 European Championships in Prague. In that race he beat the future world-record holder Sebastian Coe and the future Olympic Champion Steve Ovett both from the UK. Beyer's time of 1:43.84 made him temporarily the fourth-fastest 800m runner of all time. Beyer himself explained to the British sports journalist and writer Pat Butcher that he won that surprising championship because for the first and only time in his career, he had been able to train for the previous year free from injuries. He also ran intelligently, not taking the lead until the final tens of metres, but at the same time following Coe and Ovett closely. Ultimately, in Beyer's opinion, he was in a good shape that day and could thus defeat even Ovett, who was known as a sharp kicker (see Pat Butcher, The Perfect Distance: Ovett&Coe: The Record-Breaking Rivalry, London: Weidenfeld&Nicolson, 2004).
In the 1978 European Athletics Championships, he also participated in 1,500 metres where he placed ninth (see, for example, "European Championships Prague" / EM-Praha, Tapio Pekola et al., eds., Kaarina, Finland: "Runner" / Juoksija magazine, 1978). After 1978, he continued his competitive running career until at least 1982, but he never won a major international championship again. Olga Pavlovna Mineyeva (Russian: Ольга Павловна Минеева; born October 1, 1952 in Degtyarsk, Sverdlovsk Oblast) is a Soviet athlete, who competed for the USSR at the 1980 Summer Olympics held in Moscow, Russia. Pamela Jelimo
Pamela Jelimo (born 5 December 1989) is a Kenyan middle-distance runner, specialising in the 800 metres. She won the gold medal at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. She is the first Kenyan woman to win an Olympic gold medal and also the first Kenyan to win the Golden League Jackpot. She holds both the 800 m world junior record and the senior African record over the same distance. Jelimo is also one of the youngest women to win an Olympic gold medal for Kenya.
She won that 800 m Olympic gold when she was only 18 years old.
Pamela Jelimo was born in Kiptamok village, Nandi District, Rift Valley Province. Her mother, Esther Cheptoo Keter, was a promising 200 metres and 400 metres runner, but the customs of the Nandi tribe meant that as the last-born daughter she could not marry and had to care for her parents in their old age. However, she was allowed to bear children to different men, thus Jelimo was raised by her mother in a family of three brothers and six sisters. Jelimo began running in 2003, aged 13, at Koyo Secondary in the Kaptumo division, near Kapsabet. She quickly established herself as an accomplished athlete, winning at schools' championships in the 100 metres, 200 m, 400 m, 800 metres, 400 metres hurdles and heptathlon. Her high school games teacher Philip Ng'eno remarked that she used to compete with the boys in sprint events as the girls did not provide the competition she needed.

Paul Ereng
Paul Ereng (born August 22, 1967) is a former Kenyan athlete, and the surprise winner of the 800 metres at the 1988 Summer Olympics.
Born in Kitale, Trans-Nzoia, Kenya, Paul Ereng attended Starehe Boys Centre and School in Nairobi, Kenya. He was a promising 400 m runner until the end of 1987. After enrolling at the University of Virginia, Ereng took up the 800 m in early 1988.
Ereng was undefeated during the U.S. outdoor season in early 1988. He won the NCAA 800 m title in 1988 and 1989. But in the Kenyan Olympic trials, Ereng barely qualified for the Olympic team, finishing third. Despite his rapid development, Ereng wasn't seen as a potential gold medallist when he arrived at the Olympic Games in Seoul. However, people started to rate his chances more seriously after he won his semi-final in a personal best of 1:44.55.
In the Olympic final, Ereng was fourth as they entered the straight, but he then surged past the three runners in front of him to win the gold medal. After the Olympics, he returned home to Kenya to a hero's welcome, the highlight of which was receiving, in a time-honoured tradition, his gold medal was once more presented to him during evening assembly at his former school, Starehe, by the late Dr. Geoffrey William Griffin. At the World Indoor Championships in Budapest the following year, Ereng produced a devastating finish to win the gold medal in a new world indoor record of 1:44.84.

Rick Wohlhuter
Rick Wohlhuter (born December 23, 1948, St. Charles, Illinois) is an American athlete who competed mainly in the 800 meters.
He graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1971. Soon after, he qualified for the 1972 Summer Olympics, held in Munich, Germany. In 1976, he qualified for the 800 and 1500 meter events in the 1976 Summer Olympics held in Montreal, Canada. He finished 6th in the 1500 meters. In the 800 meters, he won the bronze medal in a race in which Alberto Juantorena broke the world record.
In domestic competition, Wohlhuter was the U.S. national champion for the 800 meters in 1973 and 1974 and was ranked #1 in the world both years by Track & Field News. Also in 1974, Wohlhuter won the first of three indoor 1000 yard U.S. national titles, set a world record for the 880-yard run in 1:44.10 (=1:43.4 800 meters), and a world record in the 1000 meter event of 2:13.9, still a U.S. record—the longest standing current American outdoor record. He was named as the winner of the Sullivan Award as the nation's top amateur athlete for his achievements in 1974 and for his #1 world ranking by Track & Field News.

Sammy Koskei
Sammy Koskei (born 14 May 1961) is a former Kenyan middle distance runner who specialized in the 800 metres.
Koskei was one of the best Kenyan 800m competitors in 80's, setting fast times, but lacked success at the international major championships. His breakthrough year was 1982 when the youngster broke 1:45 second bareer for the first time in his career. That same year he made 800m final at the Commonwealth Games in Brisbane, but finished a distant last. Same fate befel Sammy at the World Championships in Helsinki in 1983, this time in the preliminaries.
Another year later, Koskei won his first title when winning 800m at African Championships in Rabat. However, he found very difficult to represent his country at the international competitions due to great depth of Kenyan talents and failed to reach the final at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 1984. On 26 August 1984 he ran the 800 metres in 1:42.28 minutes, only finishing behind Joaquim Cruz who won the race in 1:41.77. These times were the two fastest times in the world that season, and moreover, the second and third fastest times in history at the time, behind Sebastian Coe.

Sebastian Coe
Sebastian Newbold Coe, Baron Coe, KBE (born 29 September 1956), often known as Seb Coe, is an English former athlete and politician. As a middle distance runner, Coe won four Olympic medals, including the 1500 metres gold medal at the Olympic Games in 1980 and 1984, and set eight outdoor and three indoor world records in middle distance track events (and also participated in a world record relay). His rivalries with fellow Britons Steve Ovett and Steve Cram dominated middle-distance racing for much of the 1980s.
Following his retirement from athletics he served as a Member of Parliament for the Conservative Party from 1992–97, and became a life peer in 2000. He was the head of the London bid to host the 2012 Summer Olympics, and, after the International Olympic Committee awarded the games to London, became the chairman of the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games. In 2007, he was also elected a vice-president of the International Association of Athletics Federations. On 25 August 2011, he was re-elected for another four year term.

Sigrun Wodars
Sigrun Grau (born 7 November 1965 in Neu Kaliß, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern) is an East German former middle distance athlete, who was born Sigrun Ludwigs in Neu Kaliß. She started out as a 400 m runner in Schwerin, and proved successful in this event in junior meets. She then switched clubs and changed to the 800 m like her new club mate, Christine Wachtel, who would also become her closest rival.
Now competing under the name of Wodars, she won her first national title in 1986, and placed second at the European Championships in Stuttgart, behind Nadezhda Olizarenko of the Soviet Union.
The following year, she lost the world indoor title to Wachtel, but took revenge at the outdoor World Championships, defeating her in a close finish. The two repeated their one-two finish at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul.
Wodars completed her set of titles by also winning the 1990 European Championships in Split, her last title. She divorced and took part as Sigrun Grau in the 1991 World Championships and the 1992 Olympics, but failed to make it through the preliminaries both times. She retired after the Barcelona Olympics, and currently works as a physiotherapist.

Steve Cram
Stephen "Steve" Cram MBE (born 14 October 1960, in Jarrow, Tyneside, England) is a British retired athlete. Along with fellow Britons Sebastian Coe and Steve Ovett, he was one of the world's dominant middle distance runners during the 1980s. Nicknamed "The Jarrow Arrow", Cram set world records in the 1500 metres, 2000 metres and the mile during a 19-day period in the summer of 1985. He was the first man to run 1500 metres under 3 minutes and 30 seconds. He won the 1500 metres gold medal at the 1983 World Championships, and the 1500 metres silver medal at the 1984 Olympic Games.
In 2008 Cram was appointed Chancellor of the University of Sunderland, replacing Lord Puttnam, and in 2009 elected as President of Jarrow & Hebburn Athletics Club.
Steve Cram is UK ambassador for Atos Origin, the Worldwide IT Partner for the International Olympic Committee, for the London 2012 Olympic Games.
In 1980, Cram won his place in the British Olympic team after finishing in 2nd place to Ovett in the mile at Crystal Palace. The race had been marked as a run-off between Cram and Scottish miler Graham Williamson for the final place (a selection decision which was severely criticized by Ovett in his 1984 autobiography). Cram, aged 19, reached the final of the 1500 metres at the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games, in which Coe and Steve Ovett famously vied for the gold medal. Cram finished well down the field, in eighth place, but healthier for the experience.

Svetlana Masterkova
Svetlana Alexandrovna Masterkova (Russian: Светлана Александровна Мастеркова, born January 17, 1968 in Achinsk) is a Russian former middle distance runner and current world record holder for the mile. At the 1996 Summer Olympics, she won the gold medal in both the 800 and 1,500 metres.
Born in Achinsk (Siberia), Masterkova started out as an 800 meter runner. Her breakthrough came in 1991, winning the national championships of the Soviet Union, which also qualified her for the World Championships. In Tokyo, she placed eighth in the final. During the following seasons, she had some minor successes (silver at the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Athletics in 1993), but also suffered from injuries. In 1994 and 1995, she took a break from running, giving birth to a daughter (Anastasia).
In 1996, she returned to athletics. Instead of only running the 800 meter, Masterkova also decided to compete in the 1500 metres, a distance she had not competed in for years. At the Russian Championships, she won both distances in top times. However, she was not considered as a real favourite for the 800 m Olympic gold; Maria de Lurdes Mutola and Ana Fidelia Quirot were expected to fight for the title in Atlanta. But Masterkova took the lead from the start, and led the entire race to become Olympic champion. After this surprise, Masterkova caused a major upset by also winning the 1500 m in a similar fashion, thereby equalling Tatyana Kazankina's performance at the 1976 Olympics (Kelly Holmes would repeat the performance in 2004). She completed her season by also setting two new world records at the 1000 metre and mile distances.

Tatyana Andrianova
Tatyana Nikolayevna Andrianova (Russian: Татьяна Николаевна Андрианова, born 10 December 1979 in Yaroslavl) is a Russian middle distance runner who specializes in the 800 metres. She did not compete in the 2006 and 2007 seasons, but improved on her personal best time in 800 metres in 2008.
In the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Andrianova was 5th in the final, so in the 2005 World Championships she was a favourite, however when she received a bronze medal she regarded it as a defeat. “I was so upset with that bronze,” Andrianova says. “I was already planning to get married and give birth to my child, and I was not sure I would be back on the track again. I was thinking probably it was my last World Championships. That’s why, when the things went wrong from the very beginning, it made me so nervous”.
In 2006 she had her worst results but after the birth of her son Nikita, Tatyana began training as she was sure that her best results were about to come
In the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, Tatyana was hoping for a medal as she so narrowly missed out in the 2004 Olympics, however, she was placed 8th in the finals.

Tatyana Kazankina
Tatyana Vasilyevna Kazankina (Russian: Татья́на Васи́льевна Каза́нкина; born December 17, 1951 in Petrovsk, Saratov Oblast, Russian SFSR, Soviet Union) is a Soviet/Russian former runner who set seven world records and won a total of three gold medals at the Olympic Games. She was also awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labour and the title Honoured Master of Sports of the USSR in 1976. Kazankina competed for VSS Burevestnik.
A month before the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal, Kazankina became the first woman to run 1500 m in under 4 minutes, her time of 3:56.0 beating Ludmila Bragina's world record by 5.4 seconds. She won the 1500 m and 800 m golds in the Montreal games, setting a world record in the latter. In 1980, she ran the 1500 m in 3:52.47 becoming the first woman to run the distance faster than Paavo Nurmi. This stood as a world record for thirteen years, and remains a European record.
Drugs Test Refusal and Ban Her career came to an abrupt end in September 1984 when she was suspended for 18 months for refusing to undertake a drugs test after winning a 1,500m race in 3:58.63 in Paris.

Totka Petrova
Totka Nikolaeva Petrova (Bulgarian: Тотка Петрова, born 17 December 1956) is a retired female middle distance runner who represented Bulgaria in the 1970s and the early 1980s. She specialized in the 800 and 1500 metres, and won numerous international medals. She is still the Bulgarian 1500 metres record holder.
She was born in Yambol, and represented the club Tundzha Yambol. She won silver medals at the 1977 and 1978 European Indoor Championships. In 1977 she was only 0.05 seconds behind the gold medallist Jane Colebrook. Also, she continued a strong tradition of Bulgarian 800 metres runners, who had taken medals at the previous European Indoor Championships in 1972, 1973, 1975 and 1976. Other than Petrova, these medals were taken by Svetla Zlateva, Stefka Yordanova, Rositsa Pekhlivanova, Nikolina Shtereva and Lilyana Tomova.
In 1977 she also won the gold medal at the 1977 World Cup, and at the 1977 Summer Universiade she won gold medals in both 800 and 1500 metres. In 1978 she participated at the European Championships, finishing fourth in the 800 metres and winning the bronze medal in the 1500 metres.

Vebjørn Rodal
Vebjørn Rodal (born 16 September 1972) is a Norwegian former middle distance athlete, his career high point coming when he won the gold medal in the 800 m at the 1996 Summer Olympics.
Rodal, born and raised in Berkåk, made his international senior debut in 1992, at the Barcelona Olympics, reaching the semi-finals in his event, the 800 m. Part of a group of successful Norwegian athletes, he won his first international medal only two years later, placing second at the 1994 European Championships .
By finishing third in the final of the 1995 World Championships, he established himself as one of the top 800 m runners in the world, and was among the medal contenders for the 1996 Summer Olympics, held in Atlanta. Not present at the Olympics was world champion Wilson Kipketer, who had emigrated from Kenya to Denmark, but wasn't allowed to run for his new country by the Kenyans. This made the final wide open. Rodal made the final, which was run in a blistering pace. Rodal overtook most of the field in his second lap, and took the lead at the last bend, crossing the line first in a new Olympic record of 1:42.58, which still stands. With four runners under 1:43, the final was one of the fastest 800 m ever run.

Wilfred Bungei
Wilfred Kipkemboi Bungei (born 24 July 1980) is a Kenyan middle distance runner, who won the 800 m gold medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. He also won at the World indoor Championships in Moscow 2006 the 800 metres title, defeating Mbulaeni Mulaudzi and Olympic Champion Yuriy Borzakovskiy in the course of the race.
Bungei was ranked No.1 in the world over 800 m in 2002 and 2003. He has a personal best of 1:42.34 minutes (Rieti 2002), thus being currently the seventh fastest runner in the history of the event. At the 2001 World Championships in Athletics in Edmonton he won a silver medal over 800 m, finishing behind Andre Bucher.
While in school, he focused on sprints and decathlon, before concentrating on 800 metres running . He graduated from Samoei High School in 1998. At the 1998 World Junior Championships in Athletics he won a silver medal. Bungei represented his native country at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece.
Bungei is from Kabirirsang, a village near Kapsabet. Several of his relatives are runners, including his brother Sammy Kurgat, who won the 2008 Cologne Marathon. He is a second cousin to Kenyan-born Danish former athlete Wilson Kipketer, while his mum is a cousin of Henry Rono .

Wilson Kipketer
Wilson Kosgei Kipketer (born 12 December 1972) is a Kenyan born Danish former middle distance runner. He holds the current indoor world records at the 1000 and 800 metres distance. While dominating the 800 m distance for a decade, remaining undefeated for a three-year period and running 8 of the 17 currently all-time fastest times, he never won an Olympic gold medal. He did, however, win gold medals in three successive editions of the IAAF World Championships in Athletics. Kipketer's 800 meters world record stood for almost 13 years. It was surpassed on August 22, 2010, when David Rudisha beat it by 0.02 seconds, running 1:41:09 (and a week later 1:41.01). He still holds the indoor record.
He represented both Sparta and KIF.
Kipketer was born in Kapchemoiywo, Kenya, into the Kalenjin tribe.
As a teenager, he was first noticed by 1968 and 1972 Olympic champion Kip Keino. Keino suggested Kipketer attend the Catholic St. Patrick's High School in Iten that was famous for bringing up young runners. David Rudisha, who surpassed Kipketer's 800m world record in 2010, was like Kipketer coached by longtime St. Patrick's coach, teacher and former Headmaster Brother Colm O'Connell. Unlike Kipketer, Rudisha did not attend St. Patrick's, rather he went to a neighboring St. Francis, Kimuron Secondary School in Iten, Keiyo District.

Yuriy Borzakovskiy
Yuriy Mikhailovich Borzakovskiy (Russian: Юрий Михайлович Борзаковский, Jurij Michajlovič Borzakovskij, born 12 April 1981) is a Russian middle distance athlete specializing in the 800 metres.
Borzakovskiy was born at Kratovo, in the Moscow oblast.
Borzakovskiy's first major international success was a victory at the 2000 European Indoor Championships when he was only 18 years old. At the 2000 Summer Olympics he reached the 800 m final, in which he finished sixth. In 2001 he won the World Indoor title over 800 m, but decided not to participate in the World Championships in Edmonton. On August 24, 2001, Borzakovskiy posted a time of 1:42.47 minutes. That currently makes him the 8th fastest man in history over that distance. In addition, Borzakovskiy was ranked No.1 in the world in that year. In 2002, Borzakovskiy ran the 400 m at the European Championships in Munich, but lost in the early stages. The following season he picked up a silver medal over 800 m at the World Championships in Paris.

The men's and women's programmes are almost identical, as they contain the same number of events, with only one difference: the freestyle distance is 800 metres for women and 1500 metres for men. The 800 metre race (or 800 metres) is a common track running event. It is the shortest common middle distance track event. The 800 metres is run over two laps of the track (400 metre track) and has always been an Olympic event. During indoor track season the event is usually run on a 200 metre track, therefore requiring four laps.
The event combines aerobic endurance with anaerobic conditioning and sprint speed. Both the aerobic and anaerobic systems are being taxed to a high extent, thus the 800 metre athlete is required to combine training between both systems.

Robert Adrian Andrews (born March 29, 1991) is an American middle distance runner, who specializes in the 800 and 1500 meters. Andrews competed in the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships his freshman year, placing second in the 800 meter event to Andrew Wheating of Oregon. His more recent achievements include winning the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship 800 meter race in the second fastest time ever run for an NCAA 800 meter Championship race, recording a personal best time of 1:44.71 to narrowly beat Charles Jock of UC Irvine (1:44.75). Other notable achievements include winning the 800 meters at the 2010 Indoor Championships, beating out Andrew Wheating at the line.
In 2009, Andrews set the U.S. high school indoor records for both the 800m, at 1:49.21, and the 1000m, at 2:22.28.[1] At the 2010 World Junior Championships in Athletics in Moncton, Canada, Andrews won a bronze medal over 800 meters, becoming (along with silver medalist Casimir Loxsom) the first American males to medal in a middle distance event at the world junior championships.[2]

Andrews attended the University of Virginia. In March 2012, Andrews announced that he would forgo his NCAA eligibility and turn pro in hopes of competing in the 2012 London Olympics. He has decided to complete his academic requirements at UVA, but will train with former coach "Vig," alongside American Record Holder Alan Webb.
Andrews is a native of Manalapan, New Jersey.[3]

David Lekuta Rudisha (born 17 December 1988) is a Kenyan middle distance runner and world record holder in the 800 metres with a time of 1:41.01. Rudisha holds four of the ten fastest times for this event.

Early life[link]
Born in Kilgoris, Trans Mara District, Rudisha went to St. Francis, Kimuron Secondary School in Iten, Keiyo District, which is known for nurturing several top runners. Initially he was a 400 metres runner, but his coach, Colm O’Connell, prompted him to try 800 metres. In 2006 he became the world junior champion over that distance.[2]

Rudisha competed at the 2009 World Athletics Championships, reaching the 800 metres semifinals. In September 2009, Rudisha won the IAAF Grand Prix meeting in Rieti, Italy, posting a new African record of 1:42.01, beating the 25-year old record of 1:42.28 set by compatriot Sammy Koskei. That effort put him in fourth place on the all-time list.[3] In the 2010 IAAF Diamond League, he took on Abubaker Kaki at the Bislett Games in June. He defeated Sebastian Coe's 31-year-old meet record with a run of 1:42.04, giving him another place in the top-ten fastest ever 800 m and leaving Kaki the consolation of the fastest ever non-winning time.[4] On 10 July 2010, Rudisha ran the 800 m in 1:41.51 at the KBC Night of Athletics in Heusden, Belgium; this new personal record placed him #2 all-time in the world for the 800 m.[5]
Rudisha currently holds the world record for the 800 m. He broke the record at the ISTAF IAAF World Challenge meet in Berlin on 22 August 2010, with a time of 1:41.09.[6] The previous record, held by Kenyan-born Danish Citizen runner Wilson Kipketer, had stood since 1997; Rudisha broke the record by 0.02 seconds.[7] Rudisha claimed that it had been his "first real attempt" at breaking the record, and that he was capable of improving the time. This was proven one week later when he set a new WR of 1:41.01 in Rieti, Italy.[8] In November 2010, at the age of 21, he became the youngest ever athlete to win the IAAF World Athlete of the Year award. He also won the Kenyan Sportsman of the Year award [9]
Personal life[link]
Rudisha is a member of the Maasai ethnic group in Kenya.[2] Rudisha's father, Daniel Rudisha, is a former runner who won silver at the 1968 Olympics as part of the Kenyan 4 × 400 m relay team, while his mother Naomi is a former 400 m hurdler.[10]
He is married to Lizzy Naanyu with a daughter (as of 2010).[10]

Kathleen Genevieve Ledecky (born March 17, 1997) is an American swimmer who specializes in freestyle events. She is a member of the 2012 United States Olympic team and will compete in the 800-meter freestyle event at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

Ledecky was born in 1997, the daughter of David and Mary Gen Ledecky. Ledecky's mother swam collegiately for the University of New Mexico. Ledecky currently resides in Bethesda, Maryland, where she currently attends Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart and is a rising sophomore.[1] She trains with the Curl Burke Swim Club under coach Yuri Suguiyama. During the summers, she swims for Palisades Swim Team in Bethesda.

At the 2012 United States Olympic Trials in Omaha, Nebraska, the first major competition for her, Ledecky made the Olympic team for the first time by placing first in the 800-meter freestyle with a time of 8:19.78, which was over two seconds ahead of second-place finisher Kate Ziegler.[2] In Omaha, Ledecky also placed third in the 400-meter freestyle (4:05.00) and ninth in the 200-meter freestyle (1:58.66).[3][4] Her third-place finish in the 400-meter freestyle is the fastest time ever swum by a 15 to 16-year-old American, breaking the national age group record previously held by Janet Evans.[5] At 15 years old, she is the youngest member of the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team, including athletes from all sports.[6]
