The body of the late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat has been exhumed by a team of international experts, who are working behind this blue tarpaulin, hidden from public view. As they try to discover if he was poisoned, as many Palestinians believe. French magistrates opened a murder inquiry in August into Arafat's death in Paris after a Swiss institute said it had discovered high levels of radioactive polonium on his clothing, which was supplied by his widow, Suha. This resident of Ramallah said although he believes Arafat was poisoned he doesn't believe that any one will stand to account for his death. Speaking in Arabic he said "It is a shame to get his body out and at the end to say he has been poisoned. It is known he was poisoned, and everyone knows who did it, can they hold them responsible (those who poisoned Arafat) this is where the question lies. Can they go to court etc. It is just a waste of time and to show that they care a lot on the topic and those who killed Abu Ammar are well known and those who kill the people are known." Not all of Arafat's family has agreed to the exhumation and Suha herself has not come to Ramallah for the operation. But while many Palestinians believe that Israel was behind the death, they acknowledge that a Palestinian would almost certainly have had to administer the poison, wittingly or unwittingly. Arafat's remains will be reburied with full military honours later on today after the forensic work is complete. I am Ann Salter ...
