Oscar-nominated music score by Miklós Rózsa. Directed by Julien Duvivier. After recovering from a serious cosmetic poisoning incident that ravaged her gorgeous face during the production of the Warner Bros. romantic melodrama 'TIL WE MEET AGAIN (1940), Merle Oberon grew insecure of her looks and so she was forever checking herself in the hundreds of mirrors on the ornate fantasy ballroom set. Although this was the cause of countless takes and the growing frustration of director Julien Duvivier, the filming of this otherwise brief and enchanting scene was finally over and done with. www.imdb.com

Miklós Rózsa 'Lydia Suite' - Ivory Duo Piano Ensemble
00:02 Love Theme 02:07 Bubbling Stars 03:53 Sleigh Ride www.natalie-peter.com Ivory Duo Piano Ensemble (Panayotis Archontides & Natalie Tsaldarakis) perform the the Lydia Suite from the 1941 film 'Lydia' composed by Miklós Rózsa (arranged for the piano four-hands by Panayotis Archontides) Having started off as a composer for the concert hall, Miklós Rózsa turned to film music at the suggestion of his friend and colleague Arthur Honegger. His first two projects in Hollywood were done in collaboration with the producer Alexander Korda, and the films, The Thief of Bagdad (1940) and Jungle Book (1942) became an instant success for both men. One of the reasons the music was successful was due to the fact that Rózsa, being a musicologist and teacher, always engaged in painstaking research. This would eventually make him a specialist in films depicting historical, biblical, or ethnic subjects (Ben-Hur, El Cid, Quo Vadis, Ivanhoe, Knights of the Round Table, King of Kings are just some of his masterpieces). The music for Thief and Jungle Book is presented here in the Exotic Suite for four-hands (comprising of the Procession, followed by Eternal Love and excerpts from Jungle Book). The audience immediately gets the taste of the Middle-east and the orient through the composer's utilisation of the scales of the region (pentatonic scales and whole-tone scales). This was a bold move, since most of the film music of the 1930s and 1940s stemmed from 19th century Viennese traditional ...

Hidden treasures ~ Sir George Dyson ~ Violin Concerto (1941) ~ i. Molto moderato {Excerpt}
≈ History ≈ {adapted from articles available from the Grove Dictionary & All Music Guide} The story of George Dyson (1883-1964) shows us a person whose life seems to have been mainly spent in studying and teaching music rather than actually writing it. A swift and sure progress through academic ranks, made even more remarkable considering Dyson's working class beginnings, is immediately evident: open scholar at the RCM in 1900 - Mendelssohn Scholarship in 1904 (1) - Oxford MusDoc in 1918 - Professor at the RCM in 1921 - Professor at Wellington College in 1921 - Director of the RCM by 1938 - Knight by 1942. His influential "The New Music" was published in 1924. However, his actual musical output is rather small, seemingly the product of limited spare time. Ostensibly, Dyson's choral pieces are his most important works, among them the once popular "Canterbury Pilgrims" (1931), "St Paul's Voyage to Melita" (1933) and "Nebuchadnezzar" (1935). However, in this case we approach an orchestral work - his 1941 Violin Concerto, originally championed by the violinist Albert Sammons and premiered by the latter on February 16, 1942. {(1): A stint in the army and work at the Air Ministry occupied his World War I years}. { - | - | - } ≈ Music ≈ Even in light of Samuel Barber's relatively traditionalist musical values, Dyson's orchestral works are almost alarmingly Late Romantic in style, at times creating the impression that we are hearing a contemporary of Elgar.
