Weekend trip to Datong, a city in Shanxi Province of China. The Hanging Temple (simplified Chinese: 悬空寺; traditional Chinese: 懸空寺; pinyin: Xuánkong Sì) is a temple built into a cliff near Mount Heng in the province of Shanxi. This site is located 65 kilometers from Datong. Along with the Yungang Grottoes, the Hanging Temple is one of the main tourist attractions and historical sites in the Datong area. Built more than 1400 years ago, this temple is unique not only for its location on a sheer precipice but also because it includes Buddhist, Taoist, and Confucian elements.

Xuangong Si - the Hanging Temple near DaTong
When you get to Datong you have to see the Hanging Monastery(Xuankong Si) . I love it, but you need one day for a visit because it is about 70 km outside of Datong. But it`s awesome! Like a little bird nest hanging on the cliffs. So peaceful! On the way back it started to snow heavily and there are difficult climbs and winding roads through the mountains - the minibus was overloaded with 22 , like always in China, instead of 10 people for which the bus was originally built. Some cars were already stuck or were in the ditches - but for Gods sake, our driver had some snow chains which saved the day!

There is a ridiculous amount of steps and bureaucracy involved in taking a train. You hand in your ticket when boarding the train and are given a piece of cardboard that you keep until reaching your destination. The "keeper of the tickets" then comes around and takes the cardboard back, returns your ticket and you exit the train station without showing this ticket. We had "soft seats" or "soft berths" on this train. A thousand times better than sitting in one of the hard seat compartments with everyone smoking all around you. An experience...

www.TravelsWithSheila.com After you visit the fabulous Yungang Cave Temples, the only other two sites worth visiting are the colorful Nine Dragon Screen and Huayan Si Buddhist Monastery. It may take a whopping 10 minutes to visit both sites and...hey...there's nothing else to do in Datong so you may as well make the effort and see them.
