Finnish Americans in Michigan's Upper Peninsula (in Finnish and English)
In English and Finnish The greatest concentration of Finnish Americans is in Michigan Upper Peninsula. One of the most puzzling things about The Upper Peninsula is that Finnish-Americans still cherish their roots. The opening of several copper mines in the area brought thousands of Finnish emigrants in the area between 1900 and 1910. The descendants of those early Finns still live in the area and many of them speak Finnish, even though they may have never even visited Finland. Andrea tells me though, that it is a tradition among these Finns to make at least once-in-a-lifetime sojourn to the land of their ancestors. We met local Finnish retirees at Suomi Restaurant in Hancock. They came from various backgrounds, having made their careers in business, civil engineering and farming. They have also kept their forefathers' faiths, whether Lutheran or Laestadian. Most of the footage was taken at Hancock, Michigan, a city of 4600 residents on the North shore of Portage Lake. It also has the title of the northernmost City in Michigan. Finnish influence in Hancock is everywhere. One can see it just by walking down its streets. The street signs are both in English and Finnish, and there are Finnish flags in each street corner. I would soon learn, that many of the locals also speak Finnish. IN FINNISH AND ENGLISH Produced/Directed by Tomi Hinkkanen/Juahnnus Productions for the Finnish television. Rockland the Opera, commissioned by the Pine Mountain Music Festival (PMMF), is an historically-based tragic opera in 14 scenes composed and written by Jukka Linkola of Nivala, Finland, first performed in 2011. It is based on a long-forgotten miners' strike at the town of Rockland in Upper Peninsula of Michigan's Ontonagon County. Striking Finnish miners were confronted by sheriff's deputies and two miners were shot and killed. Reference: finntimes.com

Talvisota- The Winter War ([Rare video] Friends of Finland)
In 1939 American sympathy for Finland. In spite of the great publicity, Finland received little effective military help. The Swedish unit with Norwegians thrown in was the only significant foreign unit to see action. The volunteer movement made greater impact on psychological front: the Finnish people felt that they had not been totally abandoned although the sympathy without action generated some sombre comments among Finns. The fact that little effective military help managed to reach Finland was in turn proof that the Western democracies could not give any guarantees for Finland's freedom. This was even more evident when soon after the Winter War Germany occupied Denmark and Norway thus effectively cutting any routes from Finland to the West. This in turn was one factor in forcing Finland to accept German help against the Soviet threat. ___________________________________________ The WAR between small Christian Finland and Godless Soviet Union!

THE OPPOSITE OF COLD by Michael Nordskog and Aaron Hautala (book trailer 1 of 3)
As many in the north country can attest, one of life's great pleasures resides in the tradition of sauna—sitting in 180-plus-degree heat and throwing cool water on oven-hot stones to create a blast of steam (called löyly), followed by a jump in the lake, standing naked in subzero temperatures, or just relaxing on the cooling porch. In this video, writer Michael Nordskog and photographer Aaron Hautala recount their adventures in northern Minnesota and in Finland to compile THE OPPOSITE OF COLD: The Northwoods Finnish Sauna Tradition. In this first of three videos, Nordskog and Hautala talk about the history and romance of sauna, and why being able to publish a book like this is so significant. Oh, and why you should never, EVER call it "sah-nuh." (Attention newcomers: It's "sow-nuh.") The Incomparable Ponoi :
This short film was shot during the 2011 fishing season.
The Ryabaga Camp on the Ponoi River epitomizes all that we love about a remote fishing experience: the excitement of a true wilderness location yet an oasis of comfort; hospitality and fine cuisine; a totally wild Atlantic salmon population that is thriving – where the efforts to care for the stocks really do show positive results; and a team of people whose attitudes to service, work ethic and team spirit are second to none.
Well into its third decade of operation in one of the most logistically complex parts of the world, under the stewardship of the Ponoi River Co and Frontiers, the Ryabaga and Brevyeni Camps on the Ponoi River have achieved extraordinary recognition.
The Ryabaga Camp has a well-deserved reputation for phenomenal Atlantic salmon fishing. It offers remarkable numbers of fish, placing it statistically as the most productive river in the world, with balanced catches from grilse all the way to plenty of good-sized fish up to the 30lb mark. It encompasses all the methods of fly fishing, from long casts with double-handed rods to more delicate single-handed rod fishing with skated flies, the occasional upstream dry, endless wading or fishing intimate spots from boats. Our water is fly fishing only, and we adhere to strict catch-and-release policies. Over 50 miles (80 kms) of double-bank water offers guests unprecedented fishing. Generous beats are accessed using 17-ft jet boats and by hovercraft for the most distant beats.
For the well-seasoned salmon fisher or for the beginner, there is no better choice than the lower reaches of the Ponoi. Not only do the repeat guest profile and quality of service attest to this fact, but the catch statistics do too. These take into account guests from six to 91 years old, from first-timers to the most experienced. They reflect those with unlimited enthusiasm and those who take their time and enjoy the river. While there is no doubt that the Ponoi will challenge and reward the experienced and aggressive Atlantic salmon fisherman, we must also emphasize that there is simply no better place to learn to fish for these great game fish, and to build confidence and develop long-term skills from real-life encounters.
The Ryabaga Camp is pioneering in its dedication to the conservation of the river. In conjunction with the Polar Research Institute of Murmansk, the Ponoi River Co, and the Atlantic Salmon Federation, the largest tagging project of its kind for Atlantic salmon has been in operation for many years. An eighth of all Atlantic salmon tagged globally in a given year are done so on the Ryabaga water and the information gathered has not only benefited this river but the international effort to conserve Atlantic salmon. About 1500 salmon are tagged by the guides each season and all are recorded by the resident scientist who carefully monitors influential ocean temperatures, and assesses the results of the recaptures so that the guests can hear the history of the tagged fish they have caught. A succinct scientific presentation is given each week to the guests.
The camp itself enjoys almost as much recognition as the fishing. The Ponoi River Co has created a luxury wilderness operation in what must be one of the most remote locations. Its crew of 30, includes five mechanics, three chefs, four housekeeping staff, a massage therapist and doctor; each is highly trained and dedicated to offering the best possible service to our guests. Every effort has been made to make sure the camp and its staff have the best possible equipment with which to operate and ensure the finest food and amenities are available. Without the support of this camp team, we recognize that, no matter how good the fishing or the guide crew is, what has been achieved at Ryabaga Camp would not be possible. We are proud of them for their hard work and ingenuity in managing to keep the camp running perfectly with fantastic food that would be the envy of any first class city restaurant.
Relax in spacious American-made tents with carpeted wooden floors. Each tent features two extra-wide, hand-crafted beds with comfortable mattresses, premium arctic sleeping bags with flannel sheets and over-sized Finnish down pillows. Each tent also has a wood-burning stove that is lit for guests before they rise in the morning and in the evening before they return from fishing.
The camp has a luxurious shower building and Russian sauna that our guests always enjoy after a long day on the river. There are many facilities including a drying room and a fully-stocked tackle shop that is often the hive of fishing tales in the camp. The Big Tent, as we call it, is the social centre of the camp. It plays host to the dining room, bar and evening activities, such as the fly-tying bench and music if a staff member or guest can be persuaded to play.

[Synopsis]
Young-Chan comes from planet of snail where deaf blind people live slow and quiet lives. When Young-Chan came to Earth, nobody understood his language and he was desperate. Then an angel walked into his life. Soon-Ho knows how it is to be lonely and soon becomes an inseparable part of his life. Young-Chan also discovers an amazing world under his fingers as he learned to read books with braille. Hopes began to grow and he dreams of writing a book. However, Soon-Ho cannot always be there for him because of her own problem of spine disability. The couple now should learn to survive alone. While Soon-Ho uneasily spends her first day waiting for his return, Young-Chan goes out for the biggest adventure of his life.
[The Filmmakers]
Director / Cinematographer: Seungjun Yi is one of Korea's emerging directors in the world documentary scene. Among a dozen TV length documentaries and shorts, Seungjun directed Children of god (2008), a story about the children living in the crematorium of Nepal, which has traveled the world including Hotdocs and is being distributed worldwide. His interest in filmmaking has always focused on the life of, so called the unseen minorities, which has become his signature style of filmmaking. With his new feature length documentary 'Planet of Snail' Seungjun teamed up with world class creative talents from literally all over the world including a Lebanese editor and a Finnish sound designer let alone the international funders and broadcasters. Yi's experiments on this ambitious project in every aspect of filmmaking broadened his view on documentary as a filmmaker.
Producer: Min-Chul Kim was born into a family that runs a record shop, a video rental store, and a photo shop altogether in a-bit-of-everything store in a small village of Korea. Thanks to the rich cultural environment of the family business, the country boy spent his teenage with American pops and Hong Kong noir films while watching his father developing black and white negatives in his kitchen turned dark room. He worked for film and TV productions to survive his life and love in Amsterdam while studying communication management. After a number of jobs including party promoter, literary agent and running a one-man production, he is now an independent producer based in Seoul and Amsterdam while mixing and crossing not only genres but also media and industries. Min-Chul's producer filmography includes Bong-Nam Park's 2009 IDFA mid-length competition winner Iron Crows.
