Automated mooring at the St Lawrence Seaway
Cavotec's automated mooring system MoorMaster™ performing mooring operations at Canada's St Lawrence Seaway. MoorMaster™ is a vacuum-based automated mooring technology that moors vessels in seconds, eliminating the need for conventional mooring lines. The technology counteracts vessel surge in port caused by changes in wave dynamics and represents a safer and more efficient alternative to traditional mooring ropes that have been used for thousands of years. MoorMaster™ has already been installed by Searoad Shipping Australia, Toll in New Zealand, at the APM Terminals container facility at the Port of Salalah in Oman, and will be used on three high frequency fast ferry routes in Denmark, operated by Nordic Ferry Services A/S. Cavotec MSL is a leading global engineering group, supplying innovative and environmentally friendly systems to the maritime, airport, mining, and general industry sectors. Scuba Diving the wreck of the America - St. Lawrence Seaway
A group of us diving the wreck of the America in the St. Lawrence Seaway, October 1, 2010 with Thousand Island Pleasure Diving (Islanddiver.ca) as our platform. I was wearing my Liquid Image HD Video Mask bought from Point of View Cameras. This was a 50 minute dive which I edited down to about 8 minutes. Make sure to watch it in 720p HD for the best viewing experience. On June 20, 1932 this steel drill barge was sunk due to an explosion. The shoal side gives evidence to the American's work with the blasted rock rubble along side. The usual path back is swimming upstream on the shoal side and accessing the guide rope back to the buoy area to access your boat. This site rests at a depth of 75 ft., upside down in the shipping channel between Jordstat Castle and Dark Island east of Mallorytown Landing in the St. Lawrence Seaway.

Averna - Vessel Self Spotting System at the St. Lawrence Seaway
The challenge was to develop a unique automated vessel (commercial ship) positioning system for The St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation that would reduce vessel transit time and result in lower operational costs. The system had to integrate hardware and software for continuous reliable operation in the outdoor marine environment of the Seaway locks. We leveraged LabVIEW RT, FPGA, and LabWindows CVI deployed on NI PXI and NI CompactRIO controllers to create the Vessel Self-Spotting System (VSSS), the first of its kind in the world to be driven by NI technology. The system resolves technical challenges related to real-time motion control, 3-D image processing, multiple industrial Ethernet protocols, and rugged outdoor conditions.
