MOTB - Herod The Great-3/5
bible mysteries: Herod, master builder and Rome's King of the Jews The man we know as "King Herod the Great" is mentioned only briefly in the bible. Nearly a century after his death, Josephus, a first century historian, described Herod as a king who "stole the throne like a fox, ruled like a tiger and died like a dog," having murdered most of his family. We examine Herod's early political rise and his unprecedented architectural accomplishments, from enormous temples to Caesarea, a coastline port city built probably as much for the challenge as the necessity. But much of the focus is on his long, violent decline, which ended only with his own death. So who was Herod really? Was he a spineless collaborator with Rome, the ruthless killer of infants and the would-be assassin of baby Jesus? Or was he an astute politician, a forceful king and the greatest builder in Jewish history? Do You Really Want to See Jesus?
Have you ever though how wonderful it would have been to be there when the throngs of people lined the streets leading to Jerusalem. How marvelous to see Jesus riding through the Eastern Gate and shouting Hosanna to the Highest!
The whole city was a buzz of talk of the Messiah. The hubbub was so great that everyone was wanting to see Jesus.
The Pharisees were so jealous. In John 12:19 they exclaimed, “Look, the whole world has gone after him!”rock-star-jesus2
Jesus had become a Rock Star to use language you might understand. It was as if He had won American Idol. And with fame comes those who are curious. Look with me at John 12:20-36.
Then they came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida of Galilee, and asked him, saying, "Sir, we wish to see Jesus." Philip came and told Andrew, and in turn Andrew and Philip told Jesus. But Jesus answered them, saying, "The hour has come that the Son of Man should be glorified. Most assuredly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much grain. He who loves his life will lose it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also. If anyone serves Me, him My Father will honor. "Now My soul is troubled, and what shall I say? 'Father, save Me from this hour'? But for this purpose I came to this hour. Father, glorify Your name." Then a voice came from heaven, saying, "I have both glorified it and will glorify it again." Therefore the people who stood by and heard it said that it had thundered. Others said, "An angel has spoken to Him." Jesus answered and said, "This voice did not come because of Me, but for your sake. Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out. And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all peoples to Myself." This He said, signifying by what death He would die. The people answered Him, "We have heard from the law that the Christ remains forever; and how can You say, 'The Son of Man must be lifted up'? Who is this Son of Man?" Then Jesus said to them, "A little while longer the light is with you. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you; he who walks in darkness does not know where he is going. While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light." These things Jesus spoke, and departed, and was hidden from them. John 12:21-36 (NKJV)
A simple request, Sir, we want to see Jesus! Yet John doesn’t record that they were able to see Jesus. In fact he says Jesus went and hid himself. Could it be that Jesus hides Himself from people today? We need to go back to the beginning of Christ’s ministry and see why Jesus reacted this way. Why He said and God said what He did. From the very beginning of His ministry people wanted to see Jesus.

12.20.2009 Grace Summit Sermon - A Mary Christmas, pt. 4 - it all points to Jesus
When we think about the story of Christmas – all the stories we have heard and read – the shepherds, the angels, Joseph, Mary – We know them by heart – but it is important to remember, they all point to Jesus. As we have looked at Christmas through Mary’s eyes – as important as she was, it all points to Jesus and God fulfilling His plan of redemption. Everything that happens in the story is a fulfillment of what happened ages ago.
There are many prophecies that were fulfilled. We will look at a few of the ones related to the life of Mary and how they took place. The key is to view these people in these stories as witnesses to the fulfillment of these. Mary would be our star witness – there for all the events – she has seen it all – Luke 2 – beginning in verse 1 – Luke talks the most about the Christmas story – other than the magi, he includes all the information we need to know. Most likely, Luke interviewed Mary herself or someone who knew Mary closely, because there are little details that only Mary would know.
Luke 2:1 Now it came about in those days that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus, that a census be taken of all the inhabited earth. 2 This was the first census taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. 3 And all were proceeding to register for the census, everyone to his own city. 4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David, 5 in order to register, along with Mary, who was engaged to him, and was with child. 6 And it came about that while they were there, the days were completed for her to give birth. 7 And she gave birth to her first-born son; and she wrapped Him in cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.
The first witness – the City of Bethlehem.
Micah 5: 2 "But as for you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, [Too] little to be among the clans of Judah, From you One will go forth for Me to be ruler in Israel. His goings forth are from long ago, From the days of eternity."
So, look at what happens in the story. Caesar Augustus – the king, “savior of the Roman world” – God causes him to make this decree to have this census. God, all along, is taking and using the smallest of details to make sure that things happen the way He promised they would. It happens that when Mary is ready to deliver, they travel back to Bethlehem – to fulfill His promise.
As we move on in Luke – we have the witness of the angels.
Luke 2:8 And in the same region there were [some] shepherds staying out in the fields, and keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And an angel of the Lord suddenly stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them; and they were terribly frightened. 10 And the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of a great joy which shall be for all the people; 11 for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 12 "And this [will be] a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in cloths, and lying in a manger." 13 And suddenly there appeared with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, 14 "Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace among men with whom He is pleased."
It is important to understand, about the angels – this story of God sending His Son starts in Genesis 1 and moves all the way through the end of Revelation – it is all about having a love-relationship with God, and Man has rebelled and is separated from God and from that point of separation – we see that God is continually trying to bring Man back to Himself. We’ve been looking at this story through Mary’s eyes – now let’s try to look at this through the eyes of the angels.
They saw this relationship with Adam and Eve – they watched Adam rebel – similar to what they saw when Satan rebelled – one of their own. And then they see God bringing humankind back into relationship with Him. Throughout this time, the angels don’t know the entire story – Ephesians makes it clear this was a mystery that was unwrapped in this story of Jesus.
1 Peter 1: 12 It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves, but you, in these things which now have been announced to you through those who preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven-- things into which angels long to look.
Now picture this – they are in heaven, and all of a sudden – the second person of the Trinity is brought into flesh as a baby. You can just imagine – God has become one of them! It is with that excitement that these angels are sent – get the feeling inside of them – “I bring you GOOD NEWS!” – sometimes we are so familiar with this that we lose the excitement of it.
Think of being the one to be sent to proclaim it to the shepherds in the field. We san
