Emperor Charles I
Emperor Charles I
Emperor Charles I (aka Kaiser Karl I) was the last Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary. He came to the Hapsburg throne in 1916 after the death of the venerable Emperor Francis Joseph who had reigned since 1848. Emperor Charles had many high ideals, he wanted to end the war peacefully and he wanted to grant Slav autonomy to create something along the lines of the "United States of Greater Austria" idea. However, his peace moves were rejected by the Allies and the war meant he was unable to focus on domestic policy. In 1918 the Hapsburg empire fell apart and Charles was forced to go to Switzerland. He tried twice to restore himself to the thron of Hungary but the regent, Admiral Horthy, refused to cooperate. He died in exile in the Portuguese island of Madeira.

The Austrian Hapsburgs
The Austrian Hapsburgs
The Holy Roman and Austrian Emperors of the House of Hapsburg from Kaiser Ferdinand I to the present-day heirs to the Hapsburg throne, Archduke Otto and his son Archduke Charles. Ferdinand I inherited the Austrian half of the Hapsburg domain from his brother the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V who was also King Carlos I of Spain. The Holy Roman Empire was abolished during the Napoleonic Wars with the last Emperor-Elect, Francis II, becoming Emperor Francis I of Austria. Later the Empire of Austria became the Dual-Monarchy of Austria-Hungary. This venerable monarchy finally came to an end in 1918 following the defeat of World War I. The last monarch was the Blessed Emperor Charles I (who was beaitified by Pope John Paul II) who tried on two occasions to regain his throne as King of Hungary but was unsuccessful. Since then the Hapsburgs have continued to work for some king of political body in the tradition of the idea of a "United States of Greater Austria" which was floated before the First World War. Gott Erhalte Unser Kaiser!

Princess Zita of Bourbon-Parma (Zita Maria delle Grazie Adelgonda Micaela Raffaela Gabriella Giuseppina Antonia Luisa Agnese; 9 May 1892 -- 14 March 1989) was the wife of Emperor Charles of Austria; the last Empress of Austria, Queen of Hungary Princess Zita of Bourbon-Parma was born at the Villa Pianore in the Italian Province of Lucca, 9 May 1892. She was the third daughter and fifth child of the deposed Robert I, Duke of Parma and his second wife, Maria Antonia of Portugal. Zita was the 17th child among Duke Robert's 24 children. Having met as children, Zita and Karl would become reacquainted in 1909. They soon became close friends and for Karl it soon blossomed into love. Zita would be a little slower to realize her feelings. Karl would be forced to act in the autumn of 1910 when rumor had it Zita was to marry the Duke of Madrid. They turned out to be false but Karl was more sure than ever that he wanted Zita to be his wife. "'Well, I had better hurry in any case or she will get engaged to someone else." They were married on 21 October 1911. Their first child, Otto, was born 20 November 1912. Seven more children would follow in the next decade. On June 28, 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated in Sarajevo, Bosnia sparking the First World War. The war was especially trying on Zita as Karl was taken away to the front to lead the troops, her Italian family was fighting on France's side of the war and the people of Austria mistrusted her as an Italian.
