To Conakry and Beyond... ok, just to Conakry - Day 35
Today I leave the town of Labe in the High Guinea region and move on to the capital of Guinea: Conakry. I'm expecting Conakry to be a bit of a challenge. The laws about taking photos in the city are pretty strict and the military/police are meant to be some of the most corrupt in the world. On this edition, I simple show up to town, but over the next couple days I deal with all sorts of problems in Conakry. Conakry Guinea street scenes
I shot this video on the way from downtown to the international airport. It can be problematic filming in Conakry - a lot of people (for various reasons) don't like being filmed. So I shot this from the window of the car I was in, keeping the camera low and relatively inconspicuous. I think it gives a sense of the atmosphere in town in the late afternoon.

Streets of Conakry, Guinea - Part 1/3
I very much enjoyed my visit here. The locals were nice, and the women were beautiful. Too bad the government there is corrupt beyond belief, it's sickening. First song: Adele - Rolling In The Deep (Dirty Noise Meets The Dubstep Remix) Second song: Klatu - Notch Lock

Bucket Showers and Police Corruption in Conakry - Day 37
Conakry is proving to be a challenge beyond what I expected. Yes, I expected to have some issues getting some things done, however, I didn't expect to be nearly thrown in jail by a bunch of corrupt cops. All in a day's work in Conakry anyways. Electrical rites in Guinea Conakry [Trailer]
Submitted for IMZ World Music Film Screening at WOMEX 2012 (www.worldmusicfilms.com) Genre Documentary | Production Company Troisième Monde (France) | Co-Production Company CRRAV (France), Gsara (Belgium) | Associated Production Company Le Fresnoy, Studio national des arts contemporains (France) | TV Director, Author Julien Raout, Florian Draussin | Camera Sébastien Pin, Julien Raout | Source video/audio HD/Stereo | Recorded Republic of Guinea, 2012 | Duration 52' 03" "When you came to Guinea to produce a music documentary, you mentioned a village ritual driven by electric guitars..." The quest of the Electric Rite will take us on a journey from the capital Conakry, where the big bands of Independence (Bembeya Jazz, the Amazons...) are still active, to the villages of Upper Guinea, where griots and sorcerers-fetishists have swapped their traditional instruments for distorted electric guitars. From bush electrical rituals to major music venues in the capital, or more intimate music on the village square, this documentary celebrates the Guinean cultural diversity and tells the story of the Guinean love affair with an instrument brought by the colonists: the electric guitar.

Petit Mamady Keita - Kawa (Conakry, December 2011)
This is the rhythm Kawa played for a Malinke wedding in Conakry. Kawa is the name of the smaller of the two masks and the rhythm and mask come from the Sankaran region of Guinea. The village of Faranah is very famous for its Kawa. The other mask seen dancing here is, I believe, called Wolo or Woloba. I don't have any information about it. I doubt that in a traditional context the two masks would be seen dancing together, it's just the result of cultural blending in the capital, to make the fete more spectacular! The main soloist is Petit Mamady Keita. He is available to give lessons in Conakry. I can personally recommend him as one of the best teachers I have ever had, for all levels form beginner to professional. His number is +224 66107058
