Bruce Lipton, Ph.D - Revolution of the Evolution & Emergence of Cultural Creatives
Dr Bruce Lipton interview by Lilou Mace www.facebook.com recorded under the rain and sun in Honolulu Hawaii at the Quantum Medicine Congress Bruce H. Lipton, PhD is an internationally recognized leader in bridging science and spirit. Stem cell biologist, bestselling author of The Biology of Belief and recipient of the 2009 Goi Peace Award, he has been a guest speaker on hundreds of TV and radio shows, as well as keynote presenter for national and international conferences. In 1982, Dr. Lipton began examining the principles of quantum physics and how they might be integrated into his understanding of the cell's information processing systems. He produced breakthrough studies on the cell membrane, which revealed that this outer layer of the cell was an organic homologue of a computer chip, the cell's equivalent of a brain. His research at Stanford University's School of Medicine, between 1987 and 1992, revealed that the environment, operating though the membrane, controlled the behavior and physiology of the cell, turning genes on and off. His discoveries, which ran counter to the established scientific view that life is controlled by the genes, presaged one of today's most important fields of study, the science of epigenetics. Two major scientific publications derived from these studies defined the molecular pathways connecting the mind and body. Many subsequent papers by other researchers have since validated his concepts and ideas. Dr. Lipton's novel scientific approach ...

The Pleasure Trap
A presentation by Douglas Lisle, Ph.D.. There is a hidden force that has turned many smart, savvy people into unwitting saboteurs of their own wellbeing. When trying to make positive changes in diet and lifestyle, well-intentioned determination is, surprisingly, rarely enough. People who are chronically overweight, sick and ailing, or junk-food junkies are not that way because they${q}re lazy, undisciplined, or stuck with bad genes. They are victims of a dilemma that harkens back to our prehistoric past...the Pleasure Trap. Dr. Doug Lisle, a former lecturer in psychology at Stanford University and currently the psychologist for The McDougall Program explains a recent revolution in motivational psychology that can help people break free from the self-destructive rut. A new understanding of why we do what we do has yielded a dramatic new path toward lasting and positive change. His new book, The Pleasure Trap: Mastering the Hidden Force that Undermines Health and Happiness has been critically acclaimed. The Earth as You've Never Seen it Before: Atmosphere, Airglow and Aurora
A truly powerful image generates questions.
The incredible night photos and time-lapse movies NASA has been sharing with us provoke questions about our planet. That thin-yellow atmospheric line separating earth from space, for example, that we see in all of the night shots provokes two questions: (1) how thick is this line? and (2) why is this line colored the way it is?
The visible yellow and green/blue capped line represents atmosphere reaching ~100km above the surface of the earth. The colors are not reflected light, and not pollution, but rather are light generated from the components in the atmosphere itself. Yes, the atmosphere gives off its own light, in a chemiluminescent process called "airglow" or "night glow."
I have written a blog to accompany this video that explains the various colors of "Night Glow" and discusses the Aurora as well. I hope you find this blog a useful companion to understanding what you are seeing.

In particular, NASA astronaut Don Pettit has filmed and provided the majority of the available time-lapses. He is one of the explorers that truly understands how important it is for explorers to share the wonder of their experiences through both art and science. May all future explorers follow his lead.
These images were imported into Adobe Lightroom, cropped, rotated, and slightly tweaked. I had two main goals with the edits done in the manner I did them. My first goal was to bring the viewer's attention to the atmospheric line by focusing the cropping to prominently feature the atmospheric line and the "Airglow." Secondly, most of the images we see of earth show the planet at the bottom of the frame and space at the top of the frame. To remind the viewer that, in space, the orientation by which you chose to view planets is up to the viewer, I took artistic license with these images to present different ways to view our planet's movement in space.

Show Homens Luzes - Wrecking Crew Orchestra

Selection of a DNA aptamer for homocysteine using SELEX
Our lab focuses on aptamer research. Aptamers are small strands of DNA that identify and bind to specific target molecules. They can be used in a variety of applications, including clinical purposes. Everyone in our lab (grad students and undergraduate students) wanted to participate in this competition. However, we decided that my PhD project (Selection of a DNA aptamer for homocysteine using Systematic Evolution of Ligands by Exponential Enrichment) would be best suited for the dance.
Aptamers are selected using a procedure called Systematic Evolution of Ligands by EXponential enrichment (SELEX) that mimics the natural phenomena of evolution and survival of the fittest. We chose to use a medley of different songs for our dance because SELEX consists of many stages and each stage is a little bit different.
The process begins with a large population of random DNA strands. The DNA strands that bind the strongest to the target will survive and are copied using PCR. These new copies of DNA strands are then used in the next selection round. After multiple rounds, the population of DNA becomes more strongly attracted to the desired target, leading to the ultimate discovery of an aptamer.
My project involves finding an aptamer for homocysteine as it is implicated in many serious health problems such as heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease and birth defects. Finding an appropriate homocysteine aptamer would allow the creation of simple and rapid clinical diagnostics.

Microstructure-Property relationships in Ti2448 components produced by Selective Laser Melting: A Love Story
Hip replacements have a limited life before they too need replacing. This is known in the medical field as revision surgery and it is a source of much pain and inconvenience for the patient. Revision surgery is most often because the underlying bone has deteriorated. Bone needs stress to grow and to maintain strength, yet current hip replacement implants are too stiff - they constrain the affixed bone and prevent it from stretching. The bone around the implant starts to deteriorate and the bond between bone and implant fails.
Titanium, used in orthopaedic implants because it is strong, lightweight and biocompatible, transforms at temperatures above 883°C. The atoms rearrange from a densely-packed structure (called the alpha phase) to one that is loosely-packed (beta phase). Both alpha and beta phases are strong, but the beta phase is half as stiff and has elastic properties closer to that of bone. By adding elements such as tin, niobium and zirconium, our titanium alloy keeps its flexible beta structure at room temperature. If the alloy is then re-heated to 450°C, some alpha phase re-emerges, complicating the microstructure. This makes it more difficult for cracks to progress through the metal, making it less susceptible to fatigue failure. If the amount of alpha is controlled, a metal with good fatigue properties and low-stiffness is made.
To further reduce the stiffness of the implant and match it to that of bone, we use flexible scaffold structures. The scaffolding also allows the bone to grow into the implant, creating a strong bond. These complicated scaffolds are built from thin layers of titanium powder that are melted with a laser, then cooled to solidify. This manufacturing method is called Selective Laser Melting (SLM) and it is like 3D printing. Because SLM is good at producing one-off items, customised implants are possible; the patient’s CAT or MRI scans can be combined with Computer Aided Design to ensure a perfect fit.
My research at the University of Western Australia uses these new materials and advanced manufacturing techniques to try to overcome the main reason why orthopaedic implants fail. If successful, this work will help lead to more durable implants, reducing the need for revision surgery and allowing orthopaedic implants to be used on younger adult patients.
This video was created with friends and family for Gonzolabs "Dance Your Ph.D" 2011 Contest. It illustrates a central part of my research: the effect of the titanium alloy microstructure. The video was created using 2200 photographs because we didn't have a video camera, but also (and more importantly) because stop motion, even though tedious to shoot, is fun.
