Carol Ann Bartz (born August 29, 1948) is an American business executive, the former president and CEO of the Internet services company Yahoo!, and former chairman, president, and CEO at architectural and engineering design software company Autodesk.

Early life and education[link]

Bartz was born in Winona, Minnesota. Her mother, Shirley Bartz, died when Carol was eight years old. A few years later, she and her younger brother Jim moved from Minnesota to the home of their grandmother, Alice Schwartz, on a dairy farm near Alma, Wisconsin.^[1][2][3] In high school, Bartz did well in mathematics, and was also homecoming queen. She began college at William Woods University in Fulton, Missouri, and subsequently transferred to the University of Wisconsin–Madison where she received a bachelor's degree in computer science in 1971. While in college, she supported herself as a cocktail waitress.^[1] Carol Bartz also has two half brothers and two half sisters all living in Wisconsin and Minnesota.

In 1976, Bartz went to work at the manufacturing conglomerate 3M, but left after her request to transfer to the headquarters was denied; she was told that "women don't do these jobs". Bartz moved on to the computer industry, including jobs at Digital Equipment Corporation and Sun Microsystems.^[2][5]

She became CEO of Autodesk in 1992. According to Forbes, Bartz "transformed Autodesk from an aimless maker of PC software into a leader of computer-aided design software, targeting architects and builders."^[6] She is credited with instituting and promoting Autodesk's "3F" or "fail fast-forward" concept – the idea of moulding a company to risk failure in some missions, but to be resilient and move on quickly when failure occurs.^[7] She stepped down as CEO in 2006 and became the executive chairman of the board.^[8] Autodesk net revenue substantially increased during her tenure.

Michael Arrington (born March 13, 1970 in Orange, California) is the founder and former co-editor of TechCrunch, a blog covering the Silicon Valley technology start-up communities and the wider technology field in USA and elsewhere. Norman Pearlstine (born October 4, 1942, in Philadelphia) joined Bloomberg L.P. in June 2008 as chief content officer, a newly-created position.^[1] In this role Pearlstine is charged with seeking growth opportunities for Bloomberg’s television, radio, magazine, and online products and to make the most of the company’s news operations. He assumed the additional positions of Chairman, Bloomberg Businessweek, following the acquisition of the magazine in December 2009 and Co-Chairman, Bloomberg Government, following the launch of the subscription site in 2011.^[2]

Prior to joining Bloomberg, Pearlstine was a Senior Advisor to the Carlyle Group's telecommunications and media group in New York.^[3] Before joining the private equity firm, Pearlstine had spent nearly four decades working as a reporter and editor.
