Larry Adler plays Summertime in three arrangements
Three performances of Summertime by Larry Adler - orchestral, solo with piano and a great performance with Itzhak Perlman - excellently edited together. I would love to be able to credit the editor. Larry was a consumate musician and entertainer. These performances were from the 1980s when Larry was in his 70s and were part of a review of Larry's life on the British TV Channel Four.

LARRY ADLER - 'Genevieve' - 1953 78rpm
Respected harmonica man Larry's famous theme for the classic British film of the same name. 'Genevieve' was a 1904 Darracq car driven by John Gregson and Dinah Sheridan, who enter it in the annual London to Brighton Veteran Car Run. Much dastardly rivalry develops between friends Kenneth More and Kay Kendall in their Spyker car, wagering a race to the finish. 'Genevieve' is still going strong today, and lives in Australia fully restored

A scene from my rendition of Marber's stage play, "Closer." Scene 7, part 1 of 3: Larry wants Alice's truth.
Part 1 of scene 7 from the first play I directed at the EL Centro Theatre in Los Angeles. Marber's brilliance shines in this scene about the struggle of two people wrestling with their need to handle their truth, in a place devoid of the truth - a London strip club.
""Had it not been for the invitation from a former student to see her in Closer, I never would have come to see another staging of it; I had come to hate this play. It is now one of my favorites, thanks to your direction. You shone light into a play that is typically so darkly told, so that I could finally relate to Marber's characters and relish the humor and humanity of his incredible play."
-Paul Cuneo
faculty, Stella Adler, Los Angeles
Stefan Hajek (Larry) and Jacqueline Jandrell (Alice) really nail it. I've seen this scene in other renditions and I'm not sure why, but it can get a bit overacted.
My theory is that it's not very easy to play characters in a strip club. Often, scenes like this are approached with caricature and an over-emphasis on the deviant sex of it all, but I was looking to bring out the humanity of two people wrestling with the intimacy of their truth - one desperately seeking it in a place faking intimacy through nakedness and one desperately hiding from the naked truth while revealing everything but.
Closer was performed live for a six-week run. The set was intentionally minimal, augmented by video projection lighting and the music.

TOOTS THIELEMANS & ELIS REGINA-A Volta
On a scale of 1 to 5, "Aquarela Do Brasil" is a SIX!! One of the great MPB performances of all time, with Toots Thielemans adding soaring beautiful harmonica/guitar solos between some truly amazing vocals by Elis Regina. Plus Toots gives three solid solo performances, including an Elis tribute.
Recorded in 1969, during a "howling snowstorm" in Stockholm Sweden of all places, the Brazilian Super-Diva, Elis Regina, and the acclaimed jazz master, Toots Thielemans, conjured up a steaming, mid-summer Brazilian beach in the studio. Elis is on fire throughout and clearly having alot of fun! Her musical quintet, Elis Cinco, is brilliant and audibly enthusiastic. Singing with a wide range of emotions and tossing off gymnastic phrases with ease, Elis is incredible! She wields her voice like a knief, cutting quickly and deeply into each song. Toots is equally brilliant and the entire ensemble plays like old musical friends. I speak no Portuguese but this music is as clear as a crystal.
Normally I pick out a "Piece D'Resistance" in every CD, but this CD is so uniformly brilliant that there are too many outstanding performances by both artists to pick one. The sensuous, sultry "Barquinho" (Little Boat) is cast as an overpowering ballad performance that will slow your breathing. "Voce", the tongue twisting "Corrida de Jangada", and the sizzling "Wave" (with Elis' patented "sozinho" Afro-Brazilian tagline at the end) are new again. She totally personalizes "Aquarela Do Brasil" using the 'bridge' only and then adds the batucada "Nega do Cabelo Duro" to it, infusing it with humor and the sound of "crickets": very unique performance. And the octave-jumping tour de force of "Cantu de Ossanha" is spine-tingling great singing like no one else can do it.
I bought this CD primarily out of curiosity about the combination of Toots & Elis. I had recently bought the excellent Chez Toots CD and noticed this CD in his discography. I popped it in the CD player and wandered away. The next morning the CD player woke me up with "Wave" and I was captivated and totally amazed for the next hour. As a jazz, classical, and pop music fan, I KNOW singers and this singer was someone very, very special. She understood nuance, emotion, improvisation, the blues (ok, "saudade", if you must), how to deliver a knockout punch and leave us wanting more. It's no wonder they called her 'Furacão' (The Hurricane). Now I'm collecting more Elis recordings and have just purchased the self-titled first CD cut by her multiple Grammy-winning daughter, "Maria Rita". With this CD, Elis (over twenty years after her tragic accidental death) has stolen my musical heart. She ranks in the company of the greatest singers ever: Ella, Sarah, Maria Callas, Judy, and LadyDay. I think she realized she was really a jazz singer at heart interpreting MBP. Believe me, this CD should be required listening for ALL music fans who love GREAT MUSIC. Definitely, a SIX ! ("The Return"-Track 12)

Smoke Gets In Your Eyes By The Platters & Others Later In High Definition!
"Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" is a show tune written by American composer Jerome Kern and lyricist Otto Harbach for their 1933 operetta Roberta. It was originally recorded by Gertrude Niesen, on 13 October, 1933 on the Victor label 24454. It was performed by Irene Dunne for the 1935 film adaptation, costarring Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers and Randolph Scott. It has been covered by numerous artists, beginning with Paul Whiteman and His Orchestra with Bob Lawrence on vocal, which went to the top of the charts in 1934, and including Nat "King" Cole who first covered it in 1946. It also featured in "Lovely to Look At", a 1952 remake of "Roberta", where it was sung by Kathryn Grayson. Possibly the most famous version was recorded in 1958 by the doo wop group The Platters, which became a number one hit on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and reached number three on the R&B; charts in 1959.[1]
In 1956, Vic Damone covered this song with a very dramatic and different rendition, which became one of his most famous songs. For bandleader Ray Conniff it was one of his signature songs during his career. A 1972 remake by British band Blue Haze also became popular. Saxophone player Boots Randolph did an acoustic cover of the song on the B-side of his LP Yakety Sax. Bryan Ferry recorded a quavering, briefly popular version of the song in 1974 on the album Another Time, Another Place, which reached number 17 on the UK charts in September 1974. Jerry Garcia, who was named after Jerome Kern, released a music video in the early 1990s covering the classic tune, with actress Ashley Judd sitting in the background listening. Similarly in the early 1990s the song was performed by Eartha Kitt as part of her work with a small jazz combo in Germany; these recordings are preserved under the name Thinking Jazz.
