Remember Lot's Wife and Let Go the Salt!
JOURNEY 2010: LIVING THE WILL OF GOD: LET GO THE SALT
Journey 2010 is about living in the will of God. It is about what John said in 3 John 1:4 "I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth."
Now God's Will, God's truth will always be corrupted and thwarted by unrighteousness "Romans 1:18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth."
END TIMES
This morning I will reveal to you the single greatest motivation we as Christians have for walking in the truth. This revealing involves "end times" teachings. Now most of us are very curious about the "end times". Most of you responded that something you would like to know more about is the Book of Revelations.
Let me give you this about that. Curiosity is not the proper reason to study Revelations. Jesus gives us the proper reason to study the Word or Revelations: "Matthew 5:6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled." If your study is motivated by your personal hunger and desire for righteousness, God will satisfy you, He will teach you. But if you are only motivated by curiosity or the pride of 'knowing', you will come away not knowing, not being satisfied.
Now as I teach this morning, you may question some of my suggestions as not being in line with what you believe is correct, especially among Southern Baptists. But allow me to clarify: The Southern Baptist Faith and Message is extremely vague about the end time teaching in the Bible. Here is what our official church belief is about the end times according to the Southern Baptist Faith and Message:
X. Last Things
God, in His own time and in His own way, will bring the world to its appropriate end. According to His promise, Jesus Christ will return personally and visibly in glory to the earth; the dead will be raised; and Christ will judge all men in righteousness. The unrighteous will be consigned to Hell, the place of everlasting punishment. The righteous in their resurrected and glorified bodies will receive their reward and will dwell forever in Heaven with the Lord. (2000 Baptist Faith & Message)
So if I get in trouble, it will not be from teaching something contrary to Southern Baptist beliefs. It will be simply because I am teaching something that is contrary to what you have been taught. But let me advise you. My belief's change only when I look at God's Word and study what it says and don't depend on others to tell me what to believe. The truth must be within you and it must be based upon what you have studied and struggled with. Don't accept at face value what I say or what others say. Study to show yourself approved - dokimos unto God, a workman who is not ashamed, but who rightly divides the truth! We'll see why that is so important.
OUR MOTIVATION
What Is This Single Greatest Motivation For Walking In Truth And Following God's Will?
1 John 3:1-3 See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure.
JOHN SAYS THAT THE TRUTH OF CHRIST'S 2ND COMING AND OUR CHANGE INTO HIS GLORIOUS BODY IS THE HOPE THAT PURIFIES US.
1 Peter 1:22 Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart,
So this truth of our FUTURE transformation when we are face to face with Jesus Christ is to motivate us in the PRESENT to obey His truth and in so doing become PURIFIED or CONSECRATED (agnízō - in 1 John 3:3) to God, which is what living in His Will and walking in His truth is all about.
I have read that in certain countries, hunters capture monkeys using a very simple but effective trap. They make a hole in a hollow tree and put a banana in it. The hole is big enough for the monkey’s hand to go in but not for its fist to come out. A monkey would then reach in and grab the banana. It then tries to pull its hand out while grabbing on to the banana to no avail. Its closed fist would be too big for the hole. For the monkey to be able to pull its hand out it has to drop the banana. But hunters are well aware that monkeys will not let go of the banana and that the monkeys will kick and squeal when the hunter approaches but they refuse to let go of the banana. They refuse to let go of the bait and so become captured.
LET GO
This morning I want each of us to "let go". If we are to Live in the Will of God, we must "LET GO"
Jesus was approached by a young man who wanted to know:
(The Message) Matthew 19:16-22 Another day, a man stopped Jesus and asked, "Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life?" Jes

The Will of God Is...pt 1
What exactly is the Will of God and how does it impact my life? This sermon begins with a special annointing service for Linda, who has been diagnosed with inoperable cancer. The will of God is something we all struggle with.
When I was a young man of 11, my next door neighbors, the Magyars, had a cute baby boy named Joey. I remember playing with him when he was about 2. One day I learned that he was dying of Leukemia. In fact he died rather suddenly, before he turned 3. What was really strange was that the Magyars and their daughter I was friends with, never spoke of Joey again. When I went to their house I would walk by Joey’s bedroom door, and it was shut, never open. I found out later they never went into his room after the funeral. They kept it exactly as it was the day he died.
This was probably the first time I had encountered death, and it raised a lot of questions? Was God behind this? Did God plan for Joey to die? Why did the Magyars, who were Jewish, get mad at their God? Did they think God had made a mistake? As a young teen I had no answers for them. I had no idea of God or His involvement in our every day lives.
As I grew older and became exposed to God’s Word, my concept of God started to change.
As a free thinking, free will young man I found myself thinking that God has an overall will or plan in mind. However, He leaves the details to us; after all we have a free choice. So much of what happens in this world depends upon us-our faith, our prayers, our evangelistic efforts. In fact, God must rely upon us in His overall battle with Satan. Now Satan will lose in the end, but He is constantly trying to mess things up, to get people to hate or doubt or turn away from God. I know longer think this based upon how God reveals himself in His Word, but I fear this sort of thinking is held by more “Christians” than you realize. I thought this way one time, and I am still tempted to think this way. I would wager that many of you have thought this way about the Will of God.
In Bible College I became exposed to traditional teaching on God. I learned of His:
Immutability: God cannot change in any way and is not able to change.
Impassibility: God is without emotion. God does not experience pain or pleasure. God is not subject to temptation or sin at all.
Omnipotence: God has all power, which includes complete sovereignty over all things.
Omnipresence: God is everywhere and in fact God transcends space and time.
Omniscience: God has all knowledge, including of all past, present, and future events.
These attributes were backed up by verses like these:
Mal 3:6 For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.
Num 23:19 God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?
1Sa 15:29 And also the Strength of Israel will not lie nor repent: for he is not a man, that he should repent.
Isa 46:10 Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure:
God's Will and "Open Theism"
Back to the way I think many Christians view God. It is actually taking form as a modern day theology called "Open Theism". It began in the Pentecostal, Assembly of God schools and has spread to Evangelical churches and Seminaries. It makes sense in light of the "me-focused" spirituality many Christians practice.
Practically, open theism makes the case for a personal God who is open to influence through the prayers, decisions, and actions of people. Although many specific outcomes of the future are unknowable, God's foreknowledge of the future includes that which is determined as time progresses often in light of free decisions that have been made and what has been sociologically determined. So God knows everything that has been determined as well as what has not yet been determined but remains open. As such, he is able to anticipate the future, yet remains fluid to respond and react to prayer and decisions made either contrary or advantageous to His plan or presuppositions.
They give several Scripture passages to make their case:
• Genesis 6:6-7 (KJV) God repents of his decision to make man and destroys mankind with a flood.
• Exodus 13:17 (KJV) And it came to pass, when Pharaoh had let the people go, that God led them not through the way of the land of the Philistines, although that was near; for God said, Lest peradventure the people repent when they see war, and they return to Egypt:
• Exodus 32:7-14 (RSV) And the LORD said to Moses, "Go down; for your people, whom you brought up out of the land of Egypt, have corrupted themselves; they have turned aside quickly out of the way which I commanded them; they have made for themselves a molten calf, and have worshiped it and sacrificed to it, and said, `These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the

Grace and Mommy Mess-Ups
A mommy was out walking with her 4 year old daughter. She picked up something off the ground and started to put it in her mouth. The cautious Mom took the item away from her and asked her not to do that.
"Why?" her daughter asked.
"Because it's been on the ground, you don't know where it's been, it's dirty and probably has germs"
Her daughter looked up at her Mom with total admiration and asked, "Mommy, how do you know all this stuff? You are so smart."
The Mom quickly replied: "All moms know this stuff. It's on the Mommy Test. You have to know it, or they don't let you be a Mommy."
They walked along in silence for 2 or 3 minutes, and the little girl seemed deep in thought.
"OH...I get it!" she beamed, "So if you don't pass the test you have to be the daddy."
"Exactly" the mommy replied back with a big smile on my face.
Actually, there is no test to become a Mom, but even brief rundown of some of the job descriptions of a Mom are overwhelming:
Dentist, Taxi driver, Doctor/Surgeon (stuffed animals), Lawyer, Policewoman, Coroner- (for pets), Coach, Teacher, Cook (apple jacks)/Chef (macaroni and cheese), Laundress, Dishwasher, Maid, Nurse - until we get our MD which happens after kid #2, Personal dresser, Personal shopper, Personal assistant, Secretary, Rocking chair, Singer, Artist, Diaper changer, Seamstress, Groomer, Cheerleader, Plumber, Counselor, Tissue (Mom's clothes work better) Food taster, Tickler and Pudding lid licker.
With all these responsibilities, is it any wonder that Mom's mess up from time to time? Sometimes Mom's flunk the Mommy Test!
Lydia and I were in Archie last year playing golf at Blackberry Trails. We were on the fourth hole when we get a frantic call from our fifth child, Lindsey. She was headed out to the garage to go shopping with our 8th grandchild, Laila. Laila was just seven months old. She had her in her seat that snaps into the pedestal in the car. She forgot to get something, so she sets the seat on the counter top, and goes up to her bedroom. She hears a horrid sounding "crash" and Laila lets out this blood-curdling scream. She runs downstairs to see Laila lying face down on their hard tile flor, with the baby-seat on top of her. She picks her up and sees a huge bruise and knot forming on her forehead.
When Lydia got the call, she was frantic as well. She immediately left and met Lindsey at the hospital.
Lindsey had one of those Mommy Mess-Up moments. She just didn't think that a seven month old could wiggle and kick that much. Lindsey had her first experience with "mommy guilt', but praise God, Laila was fine. It seems that God designed little babies with "mess-up's" in mind. Their little head bones are still forming and can take an accidental fall very well.
An important aspect of being a Mom is learning how to deal with "Mommy Mess-up's!
Ali Landry is an actress, model, ABC's Superstars celebrity participant, and founder of children's clothing line Belle Parish, and became mom to Estela in 2007.
"As a mom, I almost always feel guilty. I think it's just part of being a mom, never feeling like you have enough time for the kids, your husband, yourself! It's a daily struggle to be the best wife, mother, daughter etc. I can be. There just aren't enough hours in the day."
Now that my daughter's a little older (2-1/2), I'm no longer so germ phobic. I no longer feel like I need to clean off everything that falls on the ground before she sticks it back in her mouth. A few germs are good for kids!"
If a few germs are good for kid's are "mess-ups good for Mom's?
Wiktionary defines "mess up" as:
To make a mess of; to untidy, disorder, soil, or muss. "The afternoon breeze messed up my hair."
To cause a problem with; to introduce an error or mistake in; to make muddled or confused; spoil; ruin. "The change messed something up, and it's not working anymore."
To botch, bungle; to perform poorly on. "Well, I messed up my solo, but otherwise it was a good concert."
To make a mistake; to do something incorrectly; to perform poorly. "He has a hard time getting started because he's afraid he'll mess up."
To cause (another person) to make unwanted mistakes in a given task, usually through distraction or obnoxious behavior. "Stop bumping me! You keep messing me up!"
To damage; injure. "He messed up his elbow at the track meet."
To discombobulate, utterly confuse, or confound psychologically; to throw into a state of mental disarray. "That girl totally messed me up, man. I'm not sure who I am anymore."
Mom's learn that messes are a fact of Motherhood:
The morning starts off with spilled milk and sticky crumbs on the kitchen floor, progresses to tomato juice dumped on the carpet, includes a stopped-up sink and a visit to the emergency room, and finishes up with the dog meeting a skunk. Throw in a call from your husband telling you he's bringing company home for dinner -- "just something casual, hon."
As one mom wrote:
Sometimes we really mess up

Walking on Streets of Gold
Praise the Lord from the earth, you great sea creatures and all ocean depths, lightning and hail, snow and clouds, stormy winds that do his bidding, you mountains and all hills, fruit trees and all cedars, wild animals and all cattle, small creatures and flying birds, kings of the earth and all nations, you princes and all rulers on earth, young men and maidens, old men and children. Let them praise the name of the Lord, for his name alone is exalted; his splendor is above the earth and the heavens. Psalms 148:7-13
Michelangelo sculpted the Florence Pieta (the Deposition) for 8 years from 1547 to 1553. He was at the end of his life, and wanted to use the statue to adorn his burial tomb. His sculpture pictures the lifeless body of Christ just removed from the cross, and being carried by Nicodemus (or Joseph of Arimathea), Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Christ.
Just weeks before completion, Michelangelo snapped and in a rage and began smashing the sculpture. Not just one or two blows, but over two dozen, until the statue lay broken in several pieces.
“The reason…..was because of the constant nagging of his servant Urbino to finish it; and a piece had broken off from the arm of the Madonna. The last straw was finding a major crack in the marble. When he saw the crack, he lost patience and in a fit of rage destroyed the work which had consumed years of his life. He would have smashed it completely had not his servant Antonio persuaded him to give it to someone just as it was.” (Vasari)
Michelangelo gave the ruined sculpture to Antonio. Later the servant sold the work and the new owner had it reconstructed by Tiberio Calcagno who restored and finished it using Michelangelo's models.
GOD IS OUR CREATOR AND SUSTAINER. SATAN IS THE DESTROYER
God is the original master creator. While his judgment has resulted in the reshaping of his sculpture, He will never give up on His creation.
The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein, Psalms 24:1
God is not an artist that carefully sculpts a masterpiece and then in anger destroys it and gives it away. God is careful with all of His creation. This Earth, the animals, the plants, all of mankind are His, and after He had made us, He said we were very good!
When Adam and Eve disobeyed, all of God’s creation was cursed by sin. All of His creation became tragically flawed. Sin and Death were written across God’s creation. Did God get angry and destroy us? Never. God’s plan from the beginning of time was a plan for redemption. Christ was ordained to do whatever it cost to redeem all of God’s creation, remove the curse of sin and death, and set this creation right, to restore righteousness and justice.
Behold, to the Lord your God belong heaven and the heaven of heavens, the earth with all that is in it. Deuteronomy 10:14
Redemption was needed because God’s creation had been marred by sin. He wanted it back in its original condition, so He could dwell here among mankind.
In the Book of Revelation, chapter 4, we have a vision of God sitting upon His throne. This vision reveals that the events of Revelation are based upon the authority and righteousness of the throne of God. He is acting within His authority. There are two things that give Him the authority to unfold the events of Revelation:
A. HIS RIGHT AS CREATOR AND SUSTAINER
And whenever the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to him who is seated on the throne, who lives forever and ever, the twenty-four elders fall down before him who is seated on the throne and worship him who lives forever and ever. They cast their crowns before the throne, saying, “Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created.” Revelation 4:9-11
Certainly this fact alone gave God the right to exercise His wrath upon the Earth and upon mankind. But God was not interested in merely establishing His control over a flawed and marred creation.
The ownership rights to the Earth and mankind had been wrested away by Satan. By His deceit He had enslaved mankind to sin. All of the Earth was enslaved. Something else had to be done in order for God’s Throne to act righteously upon the Earth. His original ownership rights had to be established.
B. HIS RIGHT AS OWNER OF A REDEEMED CREATION
Then I saw in the right hand of him who was seated on the throne a scroll written within and on the back, sealed with seven seals. And I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, “Who is worthy to open the scroll and break its seals?” And no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll or to look into it, and I began to weep loudly because no one was found worthy to open the scroll or to look into it. And one of the elders said to me, “Weep no more; behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has conquered, so that he can open the scroll an
