2011 marked the 70th anniversary of Australia’s first major battles of the Second World War. These actions and campaigns were fought in the Middle East and the Mediterranean where the three Australian services were continuously in action throughout 1941.
The second year of the war had begun with a series of impressive British and Commonwealth successes against the Italians in Libya. Australian troops led the advance. But a rapid German offensive quickly reversed these early victories. All that stopped the Germans’ march on Egypt was the defiant garrison at Tobruk.
For eight long months, surrounded by German and Italian forces, the men of the Tobruk garrison, mostly Australians, withstood tank attacks, artillery barrages, and daily bombings. They endured the desert’s searing heat, the bitterly cold nights, and hellish dust storms. They lived in dug-outs, caves, and crevasses.
The defenders of Tobruk did not surrender, they did not retreat. Their determination, bravery, and humour, combined with the aggressive tactics of their commanders, became a source of inspiration during some of the war’s darkest days. In so doing, they achieved lasting fame as the “Rats of Tobruk”.

Tobruk
Tobruk or Tubruq (/təˈbrʊk, toʊ-/;Arabic: طبرق Ṭubruq; also transliterated as Tóbruch, Tobruch, Tobruck and Tubruk) is a port city on Libya's eastern Mediterranean coast, near the border with Egypt. It is the capital of the Butnan District (formerly Tobruk District) and has a population of 120,000 (2011 est.).
In September 2014 the internationally recognized government of Libya relocated to a Greek car ferry in Tobruk harbor. In October 2014 they again re-located, to a hotel named Dar al-Salam also known as the Al Masira Hotel in Tobruk. In November 2014 that government was declared illegal by Libya's highest court.
Tobruk was the site of an ancient Greek colony and, later, of a Roman fortress guarding the frontier of Cyrenaica. Over the centuries, Tobruk also served as a waystation along the coastal caravan route. By 1911, Tobruk had become an Italian military post, but during World War II, Allied forces, mainly the Australian 6th Division, took Tobruk on 22 January 1941. The Australian 9th Division ("The Rats of Tobruk") pulled back to Tobruk to avoid encirclement after actions at Er Regima and Mechili and reached Tobruk on 9 April 1941 where prolonged fighting against German and Italian forces followed. Although the siege was lifted by Operation Crusader in November 1941, a renewed offensive by Rommel the following year resulted in Tobruk being captured in June 1942 and held by the Axis forces until November 1942, when it was recaptured by the Allies. Rebuilt after World War II, Tobruk was later expanded during the 1960s to include a port terminal linked by an oil pipeline to the Sarir oil field.

MS Small dog guarding Australian soldier's rifle and helmet etc. while he shaves. Two MSs soldiers washing their belongings. VS Troops dug in in desert during lull in fighting. Some relax with cards, others on alert. Troops walk between trenches. Officers review maps. Soldier fires a Thompson sub-machine gun. CU note pad with V = Vittoria written on it. Captured German tank. Various shots of troops moving across desert towards smoke on horizon. Looks like an enemy position has been shelled. Soldiers load and fire artillery piece.
MS Indian cook making chapatis in desert. VS of Indian soldiers in desert.
MS Crew cleaning Anti-aircraft gun. MS Gun pit crew at alert. VS Gun crew posing with a sheep for mascot. VS Wrecked enemy planes. MS Soldier walks to a single cross, pauses before continuing past. Shots of wrecked vehicles on road. More shots of wreckage.
