This episode of Ten Minute History (like a documentary, only shorter) covers the turmoil in the Frankish Kingdom which led to the rise of Charles Martel who famously defeated the invading forces of the Umayyad Caliphate at the Battle of Tours. His reign and that of his son, Pippin III, who appointed himself as king are briefly covered before the reign of Charlemagne is examined in detail. Charlemagne is without a doubt one of the most famous European monarchs and the Renaissance of Learning, his conquests and famously, his being crowned as Roman Emperor by Leo III are only a few of his achievements. His reign lasted for 47 years and after his grandsons divided the empire, the remnants became the Kin...

Eleanor was the heir of William X, the duke of Aquitaine, which is almost a third of today’s France and was a lot larger than the king’s territory. After the death of her father, Eleanor married Prince Louis, who became king after the death of King Louis the Fat.
The Pope ordered for the Second Crusade to begin and wanted the new King Louis to command it. Louis accepted and Eleanor decided to come with her husband. During the crusade, Eleanor was influenced by her uncle and argued with the king about what territories they should attack.
This argument ended with an annulment of the marriage, and two months later, Eleanor married Henry II, son of the king of England. She bore him five children, three of which were sons, but Henry wasn’t loyal to his wife and openly had relationships with other women.
Enraged by this, Eleanor convinced her sons to rebel against their father, and Henry imprisoned her for 16 years as a consequence.
She was freed by her son Richard the Lionheart, the new king of England. When Richard left for the Third Crusade, Eleanor acted as a queen regent in his absence.
She died at the age of 82, outliving most of her children.

The Duchy of Aquitaine was a historical fiefdom in western, central and southern areas of present-day France to the south of the Loire River, although its extent, as well as its name, fluctuated greatly over the centuries, at times comprising much of what is now southwestern France and central France. It originated in the 7th century as a duchy under Frankish suzerainty, ultimately a recreation of the Roman provinces of Aquitania Prima and Secunda. As a duchy, it broke up after the conquest of the independent Aquitanian duchy of Waifer, going on to become a sub-kingdom within the Carolingian Empire, eventually subsumed in West Francia after the 843 partition of Verdun. It reappeared as a duchy, and in the High Middle Ages, an enlarged Aquitaine pledged loyalty to the Angevin dynasty, who also happened to reign in England.

This episode covers the rise of the House of Anjou/Plantagenet and the birth of what some historians call the Angevin Empire. The episode covers the reigns of two kings, Henry II and Richard I, better known as Richard the Lionheart. It mostly focuses on their relations with France but also goes into detail about the conquest of Ireland and Richard's role in the Third Crusade.
Book recommendations:
Medieval Britain: A Very Shory Introduction - This is one of the best books for an overview of the politics of the period. It is very light on certain periods and misses out some continental context, though. Very cheap, though.
Amazon affiliate link (UK): http://amzn.to/2pfvF35
The Plantagenet Empire, 1154-1224 - The best intro/summary that isn't in French. Very good with describing the relationship between Henry II and his sons (specifically Richard and John).
Ten Minute English and British History is a series of short, ten minute animated narrative documentaries that are designed as revision refreshers or simple introductions to a topic. Please note that these are not meant to be comprehensive and there's a lot of stuff I couldn't fit into the episodes that I would have liked to. Thank you for watching, though, it's always appreciated.

Eleanor of Aquitaine, duchess in her own right and Queen of France at 15. She traded an unhappy marriage to Louis VII for a younger man whom she helped make King Henry II of England. His reign lasted for 47 years and after his grandsons divided the empire, the remnants became the Kingdom of France and the Holy Roman Empire.
Ten Minute History is a series of short, ten minute animated narrative documentaries that are designed as revision refreshers or simple introductions to a topic. Please note that these are not meant to be comprehensive and there's a lot of stuff I couldn't fit into the episodes that I would have liked to. Thank you for watching, though, it's always appreciated.
Recommended books:
Chris Wickham - The Inheritance of Rome: A History of Europe from 400 to 1000. - Seriously one of the best works on the period known as the Dark Ages, it covers everything from the collapse of the Western Roman Emperor to the nomads in Eastern Europe in an easily consumable format. An amazing book.
Rosamond Mckitterick - Charlemagne: The Formation of a European Identity. - This one is by my old lecturer and so I'd advise it for undergrads or enthusiasts only. It is probably the best book on Charlemagne's reign available and is up to date on the new findings surrounding things like where he conquered and his personal education. Few maps though, so boo there.

Eleanor has reached the age of 71 and instead of taking some time off to retire, she's writing a letter to save her son King Richard from being held as a prisoner. Foreshadowing what was to come in the remainder of her life. As she arranged marriages, defended castles, and held together the Angevin Empire. Changing the relations between England and France forever.

Eleanor of Aquitaine, duchess in her own right and Queen of France at 15. She traded an unhappy marriage to Louis VII for a younger man whom she helped make King Henry II of England. But when their marriage turned sour as well she supported their sons against him in one of the worst family feuds in History.

Eleanor of Aquitaine has such a fascinating story and history, and she deserves to have a version of her face brought to life. This is an artistic rendering based on the scant depictions we have of her, including her tomb effigy. Let's dive in to learn about Eleanor's history, legacy, and appearance.

A road trip is the best way to discover the diversity of the French region Nouvelle Aquitaine! In this video I will take you to Bordeaux, to the French Pyrenees and to Biarritz at the
Atlantic Ocean.
I will show you cool and sustainable activities in these three destinations. I have personally made this trip in only a few days, but if you have more time on your hand, definitely stay longer. There is much more to discover!
Here's what you will see:
Let me show you Bordeaux in a tour with an electric Tuk Tuk, a photo walk through the brutalist quarter Meriadeck and a bicycle tour to all of Bordeaux's street art as well as the artist quarter of Darwin.
Not far from Bordeaux, we will explore the wine castle Chateau du Taillan, where we will even be shown their secrets in the basement.
From there, we will drive to Fabrèges where we will take the ski lift up the mountain for some spectacular views. But not enough, the little train called Petit Train will take us even higher up, almost all the way to the Lac d'Artouste.
Let me show you the cozy village of Arudy before we go on a nerve-wrecking ziplining adventure in Laruns!
Last but definitely not least, we will explore the hip beach town of Biarritz. Follow me while I discover the best photo spots, enjoy some oysters in the old harbour and enjoy the sunset in this beautiful town.
You wanna re-create this road trip through the Nouvelle Aquitaine? I hope you do!
