Arilje
Arilje (Serbian Cyrillic: Ариље, pronounced [ǎriːʎɛ]) is a town and municipality in western Serbia, in the Zlatibor District. In 2011 the town has a total population of 6,762, while the municipality had 18,729. The town's coordinates are 43.75°N and 20.10°E. It is famous for having large raspberry plantations in which many locals are employed.
The municipality of Arilje is located in western Serbia in the river basins of the clear mountain rivers of the Rzav and Moravica. The municipality area is 349 km2. This is a hilly-mountainous area at an altitude of 330 to 1382 meters. It is inhabited by 19,784 people (according to the 2002 census), grouped in 22 communities. The town itself numbers 7,000 inhabitants.
The municipality seat is situated at the confluence of the Rzav and Moravica rivers in a region described by many as a heavenly earth. There is numerous material evidence of continuous life in this region, from the prehistoric to contemporary time. There are many interesting facts associated to this place as well. The residents of Thessaly found refuge here in the 11th century, and with great trust they laid the relics of their St. Achileus into the existing temple. The town was named after this saint, and his cult is celebrated to this day as a people’s holiday and patron saint of Arilje.

Bajina Bašta
Bajina Bašta (Serbian Cyrillic: Бајина Башта, pronounced [bâjina bǎːʃta]) is a town located in the western mountains of Serbia. The town lies in the valley of the Drina River at the eastern edge of Tara National Park. It is the administrative seat of the Bajina Bašta Municipality in the Zlatibor District.
The population of the town, according to 2011 census, is 9,133 inhabitants, while municipality has 26,043.
In 1834 Bajina Bašta was established on the remains of the old Turkish community of Pljeskovo which was situated on the right bank of the Drina River between the Rača and Pilica Rivers, under the east foothills of Tara Mountain. By the end of the 19th century, in accordance with the Serbian-Turkish agreement, the local Muslims had to moved from this region directly across the Drina River into Bosnia, where they built settlements in the villages of Skelani and Dobrak.
The name Bajina Bašta comes from the vast orchards and vegetable gardens, that used to be located on the left bank of the Pilica River, which belonged to Turkish feudal owner, Baja Osman, who established the town's modern image in the mid-19th century. In English, the name Bajina Bašta literally means "Baja’s Garden". In 1858 the town became the administrative center of the Rača District. On September 15, 1872, Prince Milan Obrenović IV issued a decree that officially gave Bajina Bašta its status as an officially recognized town. A decade later, Bajina Bašta received its urban plan, long before many places in Serbia.

Belgrade
Belgrade ( /ˈbɛlɡreɪd/; Serbian: Београд; [beǒɡrad] ( listen); names in other languages) is the capital and largest city of Serbia. The city is located at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers, where the Pannonian Plain meets the Balkans. Its name in English translates to White city. The city proper has a population of over 1.1 million, while its metropolitan area has over 1.6 million people, making it one of the largest cities in Southeast Europe.
One of the largest prehistoric cultures of Europe, the Vinča culture, evolved around the area Belgrade in the 6th millennium BC. In antiquity, Thraco-Dacians inhabited the region, and after 279 BC Celts conquered the city, naming it Singidūn. It was conquered by the Romans during the reign of Augustus, and awarded city rights in the mid 2nd century. It was settled by the Slavs in the 520s, and changed hands several times before it became the capital of King Stephen Dragutin (1282–1316). In 1521 Belgrade was conquered by the Ottoman Empire and became the seat of a the Sanjak of Smederevo. It frequently passed from Ottoman to Habsburg rule, which saw the destruction of most of the city during the Austro-Ottoman wars. Belgrade was again named the capital of Serbia in 1841. The north of Belgrade remained a Habsburg outpost until 1918, when it was merged into the capital city. As a strategic location, the city was battled over in 115 wars and razed to the ground 44 times. Belgrade was the capital of Yugoslavia (in various forms of governments) from its creation in 1918, to its final dissolution in 2006.

Bor District
Bor District (Борски округ, Borski okrug) is a district (okrug) of Serbia with seat in Bor. It has a population of 123,848 (2011 census).
The Thracians dominated the region before the Roman conquest in the 1st century BC that weakened and subdued the Paleo-Balkan tribes. The Moesi, a Thracio-Dacian tribe, were defeated by the Roman army under Marcus Licinius Crassus, the consul of 30 BC.The region was organized into Moesia Inferior in 87 AD by Emperor Domitian.
Hellenistic religious influence is attested through archeological findings in Rovine and Tamnič where Heracles was worshipped, a relief of Zeus, Herakles and Dionysos found in Bukovo.
The Roman site of Selište with necropolis has been excavated in the village of Rogljevo. Silver and Gold fibulae from 250-320 AD have been found at sites in Negotin.

Braničevo District

In the 9th century, the South Slavic Braničevci (Serbian: Браничевци, tr. Branichevtsi ; The etymology is from braniti se ("to defend"); Proto-Slavic *borniti, related to bòriti se ("to fight, struggle").) existed in this region, east of the Morava river. They were conquered by Bulgarian khan Krum in 805 AD together with the Timočani and Obodrites. Bulgaria ⁱ/bʌlˈɡɛəriə/ (Bulgarian: България, IPA: [bɤ̞ɫˈɡarijɐ]), is a country located in Southeastern Europe. It is bordered by Romania to the north, Serbia and the Macedonia to the west, Greece and Turkey to the south and the Black Sea to the east. With a territory of 110,994 square kilometres (42,855 sq mi), Bulgaria is Europe's 14th-largest country. Its location has made it a historical crossroad for various civilisations and as such it is the home of some of the earliest metalworking, religious and other cultural artifacts in the world.
Prehistoric cultures began developing on Bulgarian lands during the Neolithic period. Its ancient history was marked by the presence of the Thracians, and later by the Greeks and Romans. The emergence of a unified Bulgarian ethnicity and state dates back to the First Bulgarian Empire, which dominated most of the Balkans and functioned as a cultural hub for Slavic peoples during the Middle Ages. With the downfall of the Second Bulgarian Empire in 1396, its territories came under Ottoman rule for nearly five hundred years. The Russo-Turkish War of 1877–1878 resulted in the Third Bulgarian State, recognised in 1908. The following years saw several conflicts with its neighbours, which prompted Bulgaria to align with Germany in both World Wars. In 1946 it became a Communist republic with a single-party system until 1989, when the Communist Party allowed multi-party elections. After 1990 Bulgaria transitioned to democracy and a market-based economy.

Drina
The Drina (Serbian: Дрина, pronounced [drǐːna]) is a 346 kilometer long river, which forms most of the border between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia. It is the longest tributary of the Sava River and the longest karst river in the Dinaric Alps which belongs to the Danube river watershed. Its name is derived from the Latin name of the river (Latin: Drinus) which in turn is derived from Greek (Ancient Greek: Dreinos).
The Drina is formed by the confluence of the Tara and the Piva rivers, both of which flow from Montenegro and converge on the border of Bosnia and Herzegovina, at Hum and Šćepan Polje villages. The total length of the Tara river is 144 km, of which 110 km are in Montenegro, while the final 34 km are in Bosnia and Herzegovina along which form the border between the two countries in several places. The Drina flows through Bosnia and Herzegovina northward for 346 kilometers, of which 206 kilometers (128 mi) is along the border of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia, and finally spills out into the Sava river near Bosanska Rača village in northeastern Bosnia and Herzegovina. Measured from the source of the Tara, its longer headwater, the Drina is 487 kilometers (303 mi) long.

Kosjerić
Kosjerić (Serbian Cyrillic: Косјерић; pronounced [kɔsjɛ̌rit͡ɕ]) is a town and municipality in Western Serbia. The municipality has 12,873 inhabitants, but the town itself has 3,970. The municipality's area is 359 square kilometers, with 26 villages mostly placed in the river valleys, though there are also some settlements in the mountains at altitudes of more than 1000 meters.
The town is situated on the road between Vojvodina and Belgrade on one end and the Adriatic Sea on the other. The town is near the mountain tourist centers: Divčibare and Zlatibor. It lies at the foothill of Drmanovina and Crnokosa mountains.
The exact date of the town's founding is unclear. Near the town archaeologists have found Roman and Serbian medieval relics, but it is believed that mass immigration occurred before the Serbian Revolution at the beginning of the nineteenth century with people from Montenegro, East Bosnia and the Western Serbian mountains Zlatibor and Tara.
This part of Serbia was under the rule of the Nemanjić dynasty until the Ottoman Empire ceased control of the country in 1463. During the next two centuries roads were built and major development began linking the Adriatic Sea to western Serbia and to the east. Wars between Austria-Hungary and the Turks took a toll on the population numbers in Kosjerić.

Kosovo
Kosovo ( /ˈkɒsəvoʊˌ ˈkoʊsəvoʊ/; Albanian: Kosovë, Kosova; Serbian: Косово or Косово и Метохија or Космет, Kosovo or Kosovo i Metohija or Kosmet) is a region in southeastern Europe. In antiquity, it was known as the independent kingdom, and later Roman province, of Dardania. Part of the medieval Serbia, it was then conquered by the Ottoman Empire, later incorporated into Serbia after the First Balkan War and before the constitution of Yugoslavia, later still it became the Autonomous Province of Kosovo and Metohija (Serbian: Autonomna Pokrajina Kosovo i Metohija) within Serbia (Serbia then being one of the constituent republics of Yugoslavia). Long-term severe ethnic tensions between Kosovo's Albanian and Serb populations have left Kosovo ethnically divided, resulting in inter-ethnic violence, including the Kosovo War of 1999. Following the Kosovo War, the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY) relinquished governance of this territory, whose governance was taken over by the United Nations, Kosovo remained legally the sovereign territory of the FRY after the transfer of authority. The partially recognised Republic of Kosovo (Albanian: Republika e Kosovës; Serbian: Република Косово, Republika Kosovo), a self-declared independent state, has de facto control over most of the territory, while North Kosovo, the largest Kosovo Serb enclave, is under the control of institutions of the Republic of Serbia.Serbia does not recognise the unilateral secession of Kosovo and considers it a UN-governed entity within its sovereign territory.

Kosovo District (Serbian: Косовски округ, Kosovski okrug, Albanian: Distrikti i Kosoves) was a district in the Serbian province of Kosovo and Metohija ("Kosovo") between 1990 and 1999. In the center of Priština stands the Carsi mosque (Tas mosque), built after the Battle of Kosovo. In the immediate vicinity of Priština there is the site of a settlement from the Neolithic period, as well as of the Roman settlement of Vicianum. Also near Priština is the Gračanica monastery, the last endowment of the Serbian King Stefan Milutin, built in 1315. Its architecture and fresco painting make it one of the most significant medieval monuments in all Europe. Today it is an active monastery for women, and open to visitors.

Kremna
Kremna (Serbian Cyrillic: Кремна) is a village located in the Užice municipality of Serbia. In the 2002 census, Kremna had a population of 722 people. Kremna is well known for world famous prophets Miloš Tarabić and his nephew Mitar Tarabić. Almost all of theirs prophecies have been correct for now.
The village is approximately 21 km away from Užice and 128 km from Belgrade. It is 822 metres above sea level. Kremna is near Tara Mountain, Zlatibor, and Mokra Gora.

Famous monuments can be seen in the vicinity of Šabac, dedicated to events from the history of Serbian people: the Monument to Karađorđe and Serbian Heroes of the First Serbian Uprising and the Museum of the Battle of Mišar, the remnants of the ancient cities on the banks of the Sava river: Novo Selo, the site of the King Milutin's Palace and Kosanin grad, the medieval fortress on the Cer Mountain.
Not far away from Loznica stands the village of Tršić, the birth place of the reformer of Serbian language and orthography, Vuk Karadžić. From Tršić, a footpath leads to the Tronoša Monastery, one of the oldest medieval endowments of the Nemanjić dynasty. This fourteenth century monastery played an important part in the preservation of Serbian culture and tradition. Over a long period, particularly during the fourteenth century, a copying school tradition was nourished in it for its own and other monasteries' needs. This preserved the historic and cultural documents of the Serbian people.

Mileševa Monastery
Mileševa (Serbian Cyrillic: Милешева, pronounced [mîlɛʃɛʋa] or [milɛ̌ʃɛʋa]) is a Serbian Orthodox monastery located near Prijepolje, in southwest Serbia. It was founded by King Vladislav, in the years between 1234 and 1236. The church has frescoes by the most skillful artists of that time, including one of the most famous in Serbian culture, the "White Angel", which depicts an angel on Christ's grave.
The Mileševa monastery was founded between 1234 and 1236 by Serbian King Vladislav. The monastery is situated in a valley of the Mileševa river, near Prijepolje. Mileševa is one of the most important Serbian sanctuaries and spiritual centers. In 1236, Vladislav moved the relics of his uncle Saint Sava from Trnovo in Bulgaria, where he died, to Mileševa. Some historians believe that the coronation of King Tvrtko I of Bosnia took place in Mileševa. In the fifteenth century, the monastery was the seat of the Metropolitanate of Dabar-Bosnia. In 1459, the Turks set the monastery on fire, but it was soon restored. In the first half of the sixteenth century, the first service books were illuminated in Mileševa. One of the oldest schools also existed in the monastery. In the middle of the century, during the time of Patriarch Makarije (the Serbian Patriarchate was restored in 1557), the monastery was thoroughly renovated. Its external narthex was built and painted, and probably cut through the wall between the narthex and the nave. In later times, after several Turkish demolitions, a new restoration was undertaken in 1863, when the church considerably changed in appearance.

Mokra Gora
Mokra Gora (Serbian: Мокра Гора, pronounced [mɔ̝̂kraː ɡɔ̝̌ra]), meaning the Wet Mountain in English, is a village in Serbia on the northern slopes of mountain Zlatibor. Emphasis on historical reconstruction has made it into a popular tourist center with unique attractions.
Mokra Gora has become popular after a reconstruction of a narrow gauge railway called Šargan Eight which is unique in the world. Its route viewed from the sky, looks like the number 8.
In addition, the well-known Serbian film director Emir Kusturica has also made a contribution to the development of tourism in Mokra Gora. He financed the construction of an ethno village Drvengrad (Timber Town). For this development, Kusturica received the "Philippe Rotthier European Architecture Award" from the Brussels Foundation for Architecture.

Montenegro
Montenegro (ⁱ/ˌmɒntɨˈneɪɡroʊ/ or /ˌmɒntɨˈniːɡroʊ/; or /ˌmɒntɨˈnɛɡroʊ/; Montenegrin: Crna Gora Црна Гора [tsr̩̂ːnaː ɡɔ̌ra] ( listen), meaning "Black Mountain") is a country in Southeastern Europe. It has a coast on the Adriatic Sea to the south-west and is bordered by Croatia to the west, Bosnia and Herzegovina to the northwest, Serbia to the northeast and Albania to the southeast. Its capital and largest city is Podgorica, while Cetinje is designated as the Prijestonica (Пријестоница), meaning the former Royal Capital City.
In the 10th century, there existed three Slavic principalities on the territory of Montenegro: Duklja, roughly corresponding to the southern half, Travunia, the west, and Rascia, the north. In 1042, archon Stefan Vojislav led a revolt that resulted in independence of Duklja and the establishment of the Vojislavljević dynasty. Duklja reached its zenith under Vojislav's son, Mihailo (1046–81), and his son Bodin (1081–1101). By the 13th century, Zeta had replaced Duklja when referring to the realm, which at the time was part of the Serbian Grand Principality of the Nemanjić dynasty.

In the monuments heritage of Čačak a special place take the religious building: monasteries and churches. The ten monasteries of the Ovčarsko-Kablarska Gorge are referred to as the Serbian Athos. Certain of them were built in the time of the Serb gentry of the Nemanjić, Lazarević and Branković dynasties. Over centuries these ten monasteries safeguarded the ancient manuscripts, out of which some were also written there.
Čačak is one of the major economic centers of Serbia. Its economy is dominated by industrial production. Above all, by metal-processing (the "Sloboda" and "Cer" factories), paper production (Paper Factory), chemical industry (the "1 May"). It has also well developed agriculture ("Stocar").

Within the city boundaries itself stands the Niš Fortress, which ranks among the most beautiful and best preserved fortresses in the Balkans, built in the late seventeenth century. On the outskirts of Niš is a unique monument - the Skull Tower (Ćele kula) built by the Turks from the skulls and heads of the Serbian warriors who died in the Battle of Čegar in 1809, led by Stevan Sinđelić, against the Turks. After the Turkish victory, this battle was decisive for the failure of the First Serb Uprising.
The Nišava District also features Niška Banja, it is one of the best known spa tourism centers in Serbia. It is located on the bottom of Suva Planina and a few kilometers away from Niš.

Prijepolje
Prijepolje (Serbian Cyrillic: Пријепоље, pronounced [pri̞jě̞ːpɔ̝ʎe̞]) is a town and municipality in the Zlatibor District of Serbia. According to the 2011 census, the municipality of Prijepolje has a population of 36,713 people, while the town itself has a population of 13,068. It is located in the Raška oblast geographic region.
One possible meaning of the name Prijepolje is "Prija's field"; according to this theory Prija was the owner of the land before the town was built and polje ("field" in English). More probable theory is that the name originates from the location of Prijepolje. When caravans were passing through Prijepolje, the side from which they arrived was before the fields (in today's Prijepolje, the neighborhoods of Ivanje and Velika Župa) and hence the name would mean "before the fields" (prije=before; polje=field). The Coat of arms of Prijepolje also tells a lot about the town.
Prijepolje is located at the confluence of the fast-flowing Lim and Mileševka rivers, along the road from Belgrade to the Adriatic sea and on the Belgrade – Bar railway. The Belgrade – Adriatic road is intersected here with the regional road Pljevlja - Prijepolje - Sjenica. This road runs along roughly the same route as the ancient Roman and Ottoman road, known as the Dubrovnik road. At Bistrica, north of Prijepolje, there is a road leading towards Priboj, Višegrad and Sarajevo. The town itself is surrounded by hills, like Pušina, Srijeteži, Gradina and Sokolica, which was making a special climate, for Prijepolje, but it lasted until the hydro plant "Potpeć" near Nova Varoš was built, and change it into a climate, regular for this cold part of Serbia.

Pčinja District

The primary and major value of the Sopoćani monastery are its frescoes, by which it ranks among the best examples of the European medieval painting.

Sjenica
Sjenica (Serbian Cyrillic: Сјеница; pronounced [sjɛ̌nitsa]), is a town and municipality in the Zlatibor District of Serbia. The population of the town, according to 2011 census, is 13,056 inhabitants, while the municipality has 25,448.
It's an old town firstly mentioned in 1253 as a place where many merchants rested and paid taxes while going to Dubrovnik.^{[clarification needed]}Voivode Stefan Vasoje, the son of King Stefan Konstantin (r. 1321-1322), received Sjenica as an appanage by Emperor Dušan the Mighty. In the years of Ottoman Empire reign, the town was used as a fortified site. On a nearby hill the Ottomans built a fortress which was demolished later. Next to the fortress, there was a merchants' quarter and some wooden residence houses. Because of its strategical, political and military significance in 19th century, Sjenica was considered as a high priority spot and therefore many military campaigns during the First Serbian Uprising were led its way. Soon afterwards, a new turmoil came to the region with resistance movement against Sultan Mahmud II's reforms.

Zlatibor
Zlatibor (Serbian Cyrillic: Златибoр, pronounced [zlǎtibɔ̝r]) is a mountain region situated in the western part of Serbia, a part of the Dinaric Alps.
The mountain range spreads over an area of 300 km², 27 miles in length, southeast to northwest, and up to 23 miles in width. The highest peak is Tornik at 1496 m. Zlatibor is situated between 43° 31' N, and 43° 51' N, and between 19° 28' E, and 19° 56' E.
Zlatibor is administratively divided into three municipalities within Serbia: Čajetina, Užice and Nova Varoš, in the Zlatibor District. The railroad Belgrade-Bar passes through Zlatibor.
The southern and the eastern border of Zlatibor are natural - the rivers Uvac and Veliki Rzav. In the west Zlatibor borders Bosnia - its villages of Mokra Gora, Semegnjevo and Jablanica mark the border. Zlatibor is located in the northern part of the Stari Vlah region, a historical border region between Raška, Herzegovina and Bosnia. The hill called Cigla near the village of Jablanica still has some borderline markings of the Kingdom of Serbia, Austria-Hungary and the Ottoman Empire. In the Middle Ages, Zlatibor was known as Rujno, a župa that was part of Raška. The name Zlatibor started to be used in the 18th century, but its etymology is uncertain. It probably stems from the Serbian words zlatni (golden) and bor (pine) — a particular type of a pine originates from the mountain, whose Latin name is Pinus sylvestris var. zlatiborica, and today is endangered.

In 1833 the Kragujevac Grammar School, the first Serb-language grammar school south of the Sava and Danube rivers, was founded in Kragujevac. Seeking to set a frightening example for all Serbia, German fascists executed 7,000 citizens in Kragujevac over the course of a single day, October 21, 1941. Saint Sava
Saint Sava (Serbian: Свети Сава, Sveti Sava, pronounced [sʋɛ̂ːtiː sǎːʋa], also Saint Sabbas; 1174 – 14 January 1236) was a Serbian Prince and Orthodox monk, the first Archbishop of the autocephalous Serbian Church, the founder of Serbian law and literature, and a diplomat. Sava was born Rastko Nemanjić (Растко Немањић, pronounced [râstkɔ nɛ̌maɲitɕ]), the youngest son of Serbian Grand Prince Stefan Nemanja (founder of the Nemanjić dynasty), and ruled the appanage of Hum briefly in 1190–1192. He became a monk in his youth, receiving the monastic name Sava (Sabbas), subsequently founding the monasteries of Hilandar on Mount Athos, and Žiča. In 1219 he was recognized as the first Archbishop of Serbs, by the Patriarch of Constantinople, and in the same year he authored the oldest known constitution of Serbia, Zakonopravilo, thus securing full independence; both religious and political. Sava heavily influenced and prospered Serbian medieval literature.

His life and personal devotion to his people has been interpreted in many artistic works from the Middle Ages to modern times. He is the patron saint of Serbian schools and schoolchildren.

Zlatibor District (Serbian: Златиборски округ, Zlatiborski okrug) is a district in the western, mountainous part of the Republic of Serbia. The district was named after the mountain region of Zlatibor. According to the 2011 Census Data,^[1] the Zlatibor District has a population of 284,729 people. The city of Užice is the administrative seat of the district.

The Zlatibor District is home to several popular tourist destinations. Visitors can seek refuge on the slopes of Zlatibor Mountain, explore the natural beauty of Tara National Park, float down the Drina River or cruise the vast expanse of Lake Perućac, ride the unique rail experience known as Šargan Eight, visit the traditional ethnic village of Mokra Gora, tour the massive World War II monument of Kadinjača Memorial Complex, immerse themselves in the history of Užice and its importance as an independent stronghold throughout its many centuries of life, visit Kremna, home of the world famous Prophecy from Kremna, and stop at various other points of interest in between these destinations.

Religious Monuments [link]

In the vicinity of Bajina Bašta stands the Rača monastery, built in the 13th century. Over its long history, this monastery was destroyed several times and then reconstructed. Rača Monastery's final destruction (after the Turks and the Austro-Hungarian Army), came at the hands of the Bulgarian army in 1943. It was renovated and restored after the end of World War II. The church was an important center of transcription and illumination of Serbia's manuscripts, with its famed monks known as the Račani, during the 17th century.

The Mileševa Monastery, built in 1234 near Prijepolje, was the endowment of King Stefan Vladislav I of Serbia, the son of Stefan the First-Crowned. This monastery was the second most important in Serbia, after it received the bones of Serbia's most-revered partriarch, Saint Sava, in 1236. The monastery has been destroyed and rebuilt several times, though luckily, 100 compositions, frescoes of individual figures, and fragments of important religious icons have been preserved. The most famous icon of Mileševa is The White Angel fresco, a famous, widely-used religious icon throughout Serbia.

Industry [link]

The most prominent active economic organizations in the municipality of Užice are the copper and aluminum mill in Sevojno, the "Prvi partizan" metal combine, the "Froteks" textile industry, and "Kadinjača" garment industry.

In Priboj the FAP factory produces trucks and buses, which are then exported throughout the world, and the combined companies FAP-FAMOS produces passenger cars.

Zlatibor landscape

Zlatibor (Serbian Cyrillic: Златибoр, pronounced [zlǎtibɔ̝r]) is a mountain region situated in the western part of Serbia, a part of the Dinaric Alps.

The mountain range spreads over an area of 300 km², 27 miles in length, southeast to northwest, and up to 23 miles in width. The highest peak is Tornik at 1496 m. Zlatibor is situated between 43° 31' N, and 43° 51' N, and between 19° 28' E, and 19° 56' E.

Zlatibor is administratively divided into three municipalities within Serbia: Čajetina, Užice and Nova Varoš, in the Zlatibor District. The railroad Belgrade-Bar passes through Zlatibor.

The southern and the eastern border of Zlatibor are natural - the rivers Uvac and Veliki Rzav. In the west Zlatibor borders Bosnia - its villages of Mokra Gora, Semegnjevo and Jablanica mark the border. Zlatibor is located in the northern part of the Stari Vlah region, a historical border region between Raška, Herzegovina and Bosnia. The hill called Cigla near the village of Jablanica still has some borderline markings of the Kingdom of Serbia, Austria-Hungary and the Ottoman Empire. In the Middle Ages, Zlatibor was known as Rujno, a župa that was part of Raška. The name Zlatibor started to be used in the 18th century, but its etymology is uncertain. It probably stems from the Serbian words zlatni (golden) and bor (pine) — a particular type of a pine originates from the mountain, whose Latin name is Pinus sylvestris var. zlatiborica, and today is endangered.

Situated at an altitude of just over 1,000 meters, Zlatibor is a climatic resort, characterized by a cool mountain climate, clean air, long periods of sunshine during the summer and a heavy snow cover in winter. Tourist facilities include modern hotels, holiday centers and cottages, sports grounds and skiing.

Medical services are provided by the staff of the Special Institute for the Prevention and Treatment of Thyroid Gland Disorders and the Rehabilitation of Patients. Modern methods of treatment are being utilized, including ultrasound techniques, stimulator's, diathermy and iodized and galvanic baths.

Notable successes have been achieved in the diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, and prevention of different kinds and stages of thyroid gland diseases.
