Ending Overfishing
Despite an increased awareness of overfishing, the majority of people still know very little about the scale of the destruction being wrought on the oceans. This film presents an unquestionable case for why overfishing needs to end and shows that there is still an opportunity for change. Through reform of the EU's Common Fisheries Policy, fisheries ministers and members of the European Parliament can end overfishing. But only if you pressure them.

Overfishing and more: SEA THE TRUTH -- In 2048 The Oceans Will Be Empty! (16:9, full-length, HiQ)
www.SeaTheTruth.nl or www.GlobeTransformer.org (NOTE for the YouTube-Team we have uploaded this movie with the permission of the Nicolaas G. Pierson Foundation) BACKGROUND Sea the Truth is based on numerous scientific publications that examine the problems of seas and oceans. Below follows an overview of the themes addressed in the film and a brief explanation. DEEP TROUBLE: WHALE MORTALITY CAUSED BY OVERFISHING According to a report of the New Zealand news channel 3News sea mammals, among which whales, are dying of malnutrition. The makers claim that this is caused by overfishing. Watch the report here: www.3news.co.nz FISHING POLICY AND QUOTA Fishing policy around the world is destructive. Recommendations from scientists on quotas are ignored by policy makers, wealthy countries plunder the fishing territories of poor countries and bottom trawlers sow destruction all over the seafloor with their dragnets. In Europe, 88% of fish stocks have been overharvested, such as the blue fin tuna which sadly is threatened with extinction. EFFECTS OF FISHING ON MARINE ECOSYSTEMS In addition to the effect on the fish stocks, fishing also affects all other organisms in the same habitat or ecosystem. Whether the fish being harvested are predatory or prey, the balance of the ecosystem is disrupted and this can have serious consequences. The degree of disruption strongly depends on the fishing method employed. BYCATCH The term bycatch has come to be used to refer to fish caught ...

Over Fishing - USA
Oct 2003 Alaska's rich waters are famous for their plentiful supply of fish. But now overfishing is threatening to destroy this precious ecosystem. The Gulf of Alaska is home to the magnificent Stellar Sea Lion -- a mammal who for centuries has lived from this 'sea of plenty'. But as over-fishing has spiralled out of control, the sea lions can no longer find food. The decline of the Stellar Sea Lion has prompted the introduction of tougher fishing regulations in an attempt to halt a worldwide crisis. However local fisheries have been angered by the move which threatens their livelihood. Environmentalists see things differently. "The fishermen will put themselves out of business if they continue," alleges Ken Stump "if we remove fewer fish now then we will have more for the indefinite future." To make matters worse, fishermen who have spent years carefully controlling certain species such as wild salmon are finding themselves ousted from the market with the introduction of cheaper 'farmed' fish. They are struggling to keep afloat "We are trying to live through this. We will not be giving up."

Overfishing Threatens Asia's Wild Fish Stocks - VOA Special English Agriculture Report.
How Overfishing Threatens Asia's Wild Fish Stocks 10/08/2012 This is the VOA Special English Agriculture Report. The pressure to feed Asia's growing population has led to dangerous levels of overfishing near Pacific coastlines. An example can be found in Sindangan, a fishing town in the southern Philippines. Wild catches are falling while prices are rising. This fisherman says the area's once healthy fish stocks are in danger because of an increase in the number of fishing boats. Across the South China Sea, fish catches near shore have dropped since the nineteen eighties. That drop has pushed fishermen to go offshore with bigger boats. Benjamin Francisco is an official with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization. He says some of the methods they use to increase their catches are destructive. "The use of fine mesh net, the use of dynamite explosives for fishing, and other fishing gear, that catches juveniles or those that harvest maturing spawning stocks." Fishing methods like these harm the ability of some species to reproduce. The fish warden in Sindangan, Julie Buot, says most of the local fishermen use fine mesh nets. Such nets have been banned for years because they catch very young fish. To deal with problems like this, Benjamin Francisco has been promoting the idea of licensing systems. The aim is to limit the number of boats on the water. Asia has the world's largest fishing fleets. They represent nearly three million of the world's four million ...

euronews the network - Overfishing: can the EU influence change?
www.euronews.com The darkest warnings are becoming reality: the world's fish stocks are collapsing. Many blame the so-called "supertrawlers" supported by public money. EU subsidies, part of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP), have helped modernise the European fishing fleet. But that fleet now shares responsibility for the overfishing which is destroying regional ecosystems. A petition by the World Wildlife Fund, signed by 150000 people, calls on the European Parliament to fight for a tougher reform of the CFP. A study commissioned by the WWF warns that the amount of fish caught by Europe's fleet could drop by 30 percent within ten years if there is no real reform. Such a decline would cost the EU 50000 jobs. What needs to be done to save European and worldwide fishery? Can Europe influence the global fishery policy before it's too late? Connected with us for this edition of The Network are: - Here at the European Parliament in Brussels, Ulrike Rodust, EP rapporteur for the Common Fisheries Policy - Also at the European Parliament, Saskia Richartz, political advisor for Greenpeace - And in The Hague, Gerard van Balsfoort, president of the Pelagic Freezer-trawler Association, which brings together 25 fishing boats. In 2012, the fish4tomorrow campaign and youth NGO Greenhouse Malta compiled a report on fishing and fish consumption in Malta and filmed the documentary 25 Nautical Miles. The short documentary is a series of interviews with fishermen, divers, chefs, and government officials discussing the issues of overfishing in Malta. 25 Nautical Miles refers to the fishing zone of the Maltese archipelago. www.facebook.com

Oceans Overfishing (d7v5)
We share Planet earth. According to the United Nations, world population has reach 7 Billion on October, 31 2011. We learn, flying. These days the biggest single threat to marine ecosystems is overfishing. Our appetite for sea food is exceeding the oceans capacity to renew. With so many fishery and so good technology, the fish don't stand a chance. Fishery is going to collapse. However there are solutions. International agreements, control & enforcement. We got to be clever. As well we need to change a little. Listen loud. d7v5.

Pollution, overfishing threatens livelihood of Peruvian fishermen
Marcelino Coila Choque is from a family of fishermen in Peru. And in his small village along Lake Titicaca, he has seen the water morph from transparent to opaque because of pollution pumped in by nearby Puno. Radio journalist Sara Shahriari and Photojournalist Noah Friedman-Rudovsky follow Coila Choque on his morning fishing rounds. Read the full story on the Seattle Globalist: bit.ly
