Wadden Sea on UNESCO World Heritage list
Wadden Sea National Park is an excellent example of a coastal wetland between Den Helder in the Netherlands and Esbjerg in Denmark. It is the largest unbroken stretch of intertidal mudflats in the world, and the perfect example of a coastal wetland with high biological, hydrological and ecological importance, shared between three countries: Germany, the Netherlands, and Denmark. The area is of international importance being a nursery of marine life, a resting, moulting and feeding area for several millions of migratory birds, and a habitat for thousands of birds, seals and many other species. The Wadden Sea, an estuary of the North Sea, has a total area of about 8000 square km. It is the world's biggest coherent habitat of its kind and one of the last unspoiled estuaries in Europe. There are many varied and extensive habitats in the Wadden Sea. This important estuary includes the salt marshes along the coast line as well as the islands and dunes. The mud flats consist of the areas which get flooded twice a day and then fall dry again, and of the channel system of tideways, channels and shipping channels between the islands, which are responsible for the flooding and for the draining. The mud flats are known for their very low inclination which is usually less than 1 meter of difference in altitude on a 1000 meter long stretch. About fifty islands and islets protect the shallow Wadden Sea. This 28 minutes documentary is part of the tv-series WONDERS of WILDERNESS and is ...

Greece's Debt Crisis and the Future of Europe
This is the VOA Special English Economics Report, from voaspecialenglish.com | http Finance ministers from the euro area met in Poland in the middle of September to discuss the Greek debt crisis. American Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner joined them. Fabian Zuleeg, chief economist at the European Policy Center in Brussels, said the United States was right to get involved. "The intervention from the US has also shown at least a risk that the stability of the financial system as a whole -- the global financial system -- might be under threat again." Earlier, the leaders of France, Germany and Greece held a conference call to discuss how to contain Europe's deepening financial crisis. Germany and France are Europe's two largest economies. Seventeen European Union countries use the euro as their currency. On September fifteenth, five major central banks agreed to lend additional dollars to European banks in the euro zone. The European Central Bank says the three-month loans will provide as many dollars as the banks need. The operations will end in December. The European Central Bank is acting with the United States Federal Reserve, the Bank of England, the Bank of Japan and the Swiss National Bank. The announcement helped lift European bank shares and major European stock lists. The Paris-based Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development has lowered its growth estimates for the euro area. In Greece the economy has shrunk this year. German Chancellor Angela Merkel ...

Praising the Lubavitcher Rebbe King Messiah who lives forever as a true leader of all mankind, he cited the Rebbe King Messiahs ability to reach out to people of all faiths and denominations, and to unite them around a single common purpose: the bringing of Messiah through observance of the seven Noahide laws given by the Creator of the world to Moses at Mount Sinai. The great Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Lubavitch, he said, explained to all humanity that only education based on faith in the Creator of the world can raise people to live a life of justice and honesty. The Rebbe endows us with spiritual fortitude and a concrete path upon which to connect with the younger generation. India Defends Moves Against Social Media
This is the VOA Special English Technology Report, from voaspecialenglish.com | http The government in India is defending itself against charges of Internet censorship. The move comes after the government last week asked companies like Facebook and Twitter to block more than three hundred websites. Officials accused the websites of posting edited images and videos of earthquake victims. They said the websites falsely claimed that the images were Muslim victims caught in recent ethnic conflict in India's northeastern Assam state and Burma. A number of the images were reportedly uploaded from Pakistan. Officials said the panic that resulted caused thousands of Hindu immigrants to flee the area. They feared that Muslims would answer the false reports with attacks of their own. Lawyer Pawan Duggal says this is the first time Internet and mobile-phone technology have been used to create fear in a community. He says India has to make cyber security the top concern for the nation. "Unfortunately, India does not even have a national cyber-security policy," he says. And there is no plan, should this kind of emergency happen again. Pawan Duggal also thinks India needs an army of its own cyber warriors. On Friday, India's Communication and Information Technology Minister dismissed claims that the government is trying to censor social media. But he did say misuse of social media has to be stopped. Pranesh Prakash is with the Center for Internet and Society based in Bangalore. He says ...

Dictionary Says 'Austerity' Topped 2010 Words
I'm Alex Villarreal with the VOA Special English Economics Report, from voaspecialenglish.com | http At the end of December, publisher Merriam-Webster released its list of top ten words of the year for two thousand ten. "Austerity" was at the top. The company made its list based on how often people looked up definitions using its online dictionary. Merriam-Webster defines "austerity" as "enforced or extreme economy." Greece and Ireland face huge budget deficits. This has forced severe spending cuts for those governments. And they are not alone. When nations get into financial trouble, they may request loans from the International Monetary Fund or other donors. Donors, however, demand austerity measures such as sharp cuts in government spending and tax increases. Michael Izza is chief executive of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. He says the world financial crisis pushed some governments to spend more. But not all debt problems are the same. Economist Dev Kar says Greece got into trouble by having too many government employees, spending freely on retirement pay and misleading investors. Last spring, Greece received rescue loans of over one hundred billion dollars. But Germany agreed to help only if Greece promised tough austerity measures.Ireland's budget deficits grew sharply after it guaranteed the bad loans of the country's biggest banks. In November, European officials agreed to a bailout nearly as large as the one Greece received. But ...

Germany, France Seek 'True European Economic Government'
This is the VOA Special English Economics Report, from voaspecialenglish.com | http Eleven countries first began to use the euro in nineteen ninety-nine. Today seventeen of the twenty-seven members of the European Union are in the euro area. The euro's foreign exchange value has remained strong against the dollar and other currencies. But economic growth in the euro area was only two-tenths of one percent from April to June. Europe's biggest economy, Germany, grew at half that rate. Ireland, Portugal and Greece have all required rescues. Greece received emergency loans twice. Debt and other problems in southern Europe remain a big concern. In early August, the European Central Bank bought more than thirty billion dollars in Italian and Spanish debt securities. Italy and Spain have yet to recover from the worldwide recession. The purchases of their government debt helped reduce their borrowing costs, but the bank will probably have to act again. On August sixteenth, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy met in Paris. They discussed economic governance for the euro area and cooperation on budget and tax policies. Chancellor Merkel said, "We want France and Germany to move closer in terms of fiscal integration." Their proposal calls for a "true European economic government." It would include the leaders of the seventeen euro countries and would be led by the European Union president. The group would meet at least twice a year. One goal would be ...
