TEDxSalford - Irene Khan - End The World's Worst Human Rights Scandal
From 2001 -- 2009 Irene Zubaida Khan was Secretary General of Amnesty International, the world's largest human rights organization. As the first woman & Asian to head the organization, she led the organization through developments in the wake of the attacks of September 11 2001, resisting the backlash against human rights, expanding Amnesty's work on economic, social and cultural rights, and launching a global campaign to stop violence against women. Irene has been keen to draw attention to hidden human rights violations. In Australia, she drew attention to the plight of asylum seekers in detention. In Burundi, she met with victims of massacres and urged President Buyoya and other parties to the conflict to end the cycle of human rights abuse. In Bulgaria, she led a campaign to end discrimination of those suffering from mental disabilities. She is currently the Chancellor for the University of Salford. Teacher Sex Scandal & Tokyo Murder: HLN's Jane Velez-Mitchell & Matt Semino Discuss (6-15-12)
I. HLN's Jane Velez-Mitchell, attorney and Huffington Post contributor Matt Semino, author Owen Lafave and Psychologist Dr. Wendy Walsh discuss breaking news in the Irene Khan teacher/student sex scandal out of Florida. Thirty two year-old Science teacher Khan, recently released from custody, has been criminally charged in connection with carrying on an illicit sexual affair with her fourteen year-old student. Topics covered include; (1) what psychological factors are compelling so many teachers to engage in illegal sexual relationships with their underage students; (2) how this case compares to the infamous and stunningly beautiful Debra Lafave who was also the defendant in a teacher/student sex scandal; (3) if the judge in the case let Irene Khan off too easily by releasing her on non-monetary bond and if Khan is now a threat to the community at-large because she is able to walk the streets freely; (5) whether there is a double standard in the justice system in terms of punishment when it comes to attractive women committing sexual crimes against minors as compared to when men commit comparable crimes; (6) whether there is a trend that just attractive female teachers are committing these types of sexual crimes or is it that the media simply chooses to focus only on the cases involving attractive women; and (7) what impact this seemingly haphazard application of justice to defendants of sexual crimes has on the actual victims of those crimes. II. HLN's Jane Velez ...

Frost - Michio Kaku, Irene Khan- 29 May 09-pt4
Sir David is joined by a man who has been described as one of the gurus of modern physics, hes the physicist, television presenter and internationally bestselling author, Professor Michio Kaku. In his latest book, Physics of the Impossible, he reveals how things that weve always believed to be impossible like time travel, invisibility and extra-terrestrial life may actually lie within the known laws of physics. With the worlds attention fixed on the unfolding credit crisis, youd be forgiven for thinking that many governments dont have the luxury to focus on Human Rights. But that would be a mistake according to Amnesty International, who annual report was published this week. The two are entwined, they argue. What they call a Human Rights Time Bomb underlies this whole economic crisis. Well to explain what they mean by that Sir David is joined by the General Secretary of Amnesty International, Irene Khan.
