Italy's Best Kept Secrets - Assisi
Nestled between the hills of Tuscany, Marche and Lazio, Umbria regards itself as the green heart of Italy. Home to the beautiful medieval towns of Perugia and Assisi, the rolling mountains of the Appennini, flower-filled meadows and vineyards, and castles on the hillside, it is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Italy. The town of Assisi, with its Roman ruins, winding medieval streets and sacred shrines, has been a major Catholic pilgrimage destination for centuries. Perched halfway up Mount Subasio, the visual impact of Assisi's shimmering white and pink marble buildings is magnificent. The city is dominated by the massive 14th-century Rocca Maggiore - a hill fortress offering fabulous views over the valley and nearby Perugia. St Francis was born here in 1182 and work began on his basilica two years after his death in 1228, as a fitting tribute to the patron saint of animals. The stunning Basilica di San Francesco, a UNESCO world heritage site, comprising of two churches, houses one of the world's most impressive collections of art outside a gallery, with glittering frescoes by Giotto, Cimabue and Martini. St. Francis himself lies buried under the crypt. Roman foundations are a common feature of many buildings in Assisi. The town's many churches include Santa Maria Maggiore, San Pietro, St. Clare and the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli. San Pietro is a sober little church downhill from the Basilica di San Francesco. Although consecrated in 1253, the ...

ASSISI, WORLD HERITAGE
Shooting and editing movies, aerial filming: Giancarlo Giupponi Sony HDR FX7 - Adobe Premiere PRO CS3 Assisi represents an ensemble of masterpieces of human creative genius, such as the Basilica of San Francesco, which have made it a fundamental reference for art history in Europe and in the world. The interchange of artistic and spiritual message of the Franciscan Order has significantly contributed to developments in art and architecture in the world. Assisi represents a unique example of continuity of a city-sanctuary within its environmental setting from its Umbrian-Roman and medieval origins to the present, represented in the cultural landscape, the religious ensembles, systems of communication, and traditional land-use. Being the birthplace of the Franciscan Order, Assisi has from the Middle Ages been closely associated with the cult and diffusion of the Franciscan movement in the world, focusing on the universal message of peace and tolerance even to other religions or beliefs.

Prayer of St. Francis,(Make Me A Channel of Your Peace) sung by Angelina, EWTN
This video was filmed in the hometown of the great St. Francis in Assisi, Italy. It was an honor for me to be able to film at such a holy place where St. Francis walked and preached the Gospel to the poor people of this land.

Messiaen: St. Francis of Assisi - Act II Scene 6
A 4-hour French opera in 3 acts & 8 scenes by composer & librettist Olivier Messiaen, written from 1975 to 1983. This is the première performance in 1983, conducted by Seiji Ozawa with the orchestra & chorus of the Théâtre national de l'Opéra de Paris, José van Dam as St. Francis. The opera is set in 13th century Italy. Throughout the work one must see the progress of grace in the soul of Saint Francis. Act II Scene 6 - The Sermon to the Birds Messiaen's love for birds factored heavily into the opera's score. The composer traveled to the saint's native Assisi, as well as New Caledonia, to research and record birdcalls of several local species, later transcribing them into melodies for use as musical themes attached to particular characters. Messiaen's full orchestration requires a vast number of musicians, to name a few, 7 flutes (3 picc + 3fl + 1 alto fl) 7 clarinets (2 Eb Cl + 3 Cl + 1 B.Cl + 1 Contrabass Cl), 3 Ondes Martenot, etc. and 100-voice choir in 10 parts

Inside Basilica di San Francesco Assisi [St. Francis of Assisi], Italy, 2010
My visit to Assisi, Umbria, Italy, to see the Basilica di San Francesco. Shows frescoes & St. Francis of Assisi's statue inside the ancient cathedral which houses impressive thirteenth & fourteenth century Italian art [0:48]. I'm shooting from the hip with a small digicam and light is fairly limited inside. It's fairly quick but you can always pause it. Also shown are views of the town and surrounds, incl. Assisi Cathedral [di San Rufino] and Basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli. 7 sept 2010. Backing music is by Turin Brakes.

Discovering our Saints - St Clare of Assisi
If this were a television series, the scene might look like this: A towering crowded cathedral, a grand organ filling the air with heavenly sounds, it's Palm Sunday, the Bishop is presiding, Solemn High Mass! The featured family in their Easter finery, having just arrived from their palace is occupying the front pew. The mother, first daughter of a noble family, always devout and pius, the father, a wealthy Count, an ancient Roman family, head bowed in thanksgiving for his aristocratic family, his beautiful daughter sitting alongside in her designer outfit... The Bishop is at the altar, the congregation gathers, receiving their palms, but, the girl is unable to approach, she is transfixed, bathed in blinding bright light, all eyes upon her. The Bishop leaves his sanctuary and places the branch of palm in the hand of the girl. The cameras fades to black, the girl is never seen again... The story does continue, but not as a television series, as a true story. The country is Italy, the town is Assisi, the family is that of Flavorino Scifi and the young girl, is St Clare of Assisi. She is now hidden away in a monastery outside of town, in a rough, thick veil and a plain brown tunic, her head has been shaven and she has tossed away her Easter finery, and the hopes and dreams of her family. It is time for her to follow her own dreams, those which allow her to walk in the steps of Jesus Christ, as did her spiritual mentor and First Saint of Assisi, St Francis. Clare had met him ...
