A History of Celtic Britain: Age of Iron (1/4)
From BBC website: Neil Oliver returns to continue his epic story of how Britain and its people came to be. Diving for 3000-year-old treasure and pot-holing through an ancient copper mine he discovers how a golden age of bronze collapsed into social and economic crisis set against a period of sharp climate change, eventually to be replaced by a new era, of iron.

Living in the Past, Iron age reality
Living in the Past was a fly on the wall documentary programme aired by the BBC in 1978 which followed a group of 15 young volunteers recreating an Iron Age settlement, where they sustained themselves for a year, equipped only with the tools, crops and livestock that would have been available in Britain in the 2nd Century BC. Produced at BBC Bristol by John Percival for BBC Two it consisted of twelve fifty minute episodes airing from 23 February to 11 May 1978. [1] A follow-up programme aired in the same year Living in the Present discovered what the participants had thought of the experiment and how they were adjusting back to modern day living. In 2008, BBC Four's What Happened Next revisited participants in the original series thirty years on from their year living together.

Liddington Castle Iron Age Hill Fort, Swindon, Wiltshire, UK
Liddington Castle is the highest point in the county of Wiltshire. It is south of Swindon, and is clearly visible on Google Maps Satellite view, east of the village of Chiseldon. It was probably abandoned when the Saxons invaded. *** The following notes are from YouTuber Mikesey1, who posted them on another Liddington video:- -------------------- Liddington stood in a dark-age war-zone. At this time, the important British cities were at Cirencestor, Swindon & Bath, whilst the Saxons were in the Thames valley, below Oxford. * Liddington stands on important trackways and roads; The Ermine way, going SE., and another Roman road going directly south, also the Iron-age 'Ridgeway' runs right under the lip of the fort. This fort stood on an important place which was vital to stemming the Saxon advance. * Somewhere nearby, but probably not in the Fort itself, will be a mass burial pit, from the battle of Mount Badon. The soil there is chalky, not acidic, so the remains will still be in situ when the site is discovered. The locations of the Saxons and the Britons during AD 499 indicate that the battle may have taken place at Liddington. * Liddington would have been essential to halt the Saxon advance into Western England, what was to later become the Saxon kingdom of Wessex. * This place is a sort of dark-age "spaghetti junction", and true to form, modern road planners built the M4 right alongside the castle.

Iron Age Roundhouse Thatching
You'll need to play with the volume on this one as it varies quite a lot. Greywolf (aka Philip Shallcrass - who has lost weight since this was filmed :-), chief of the British Druid Order, guides us around an Iron Age roundhouse, shows us some of the process of long straw thatching and talks a little about the spiritual significance of this particular roundhouse. Greywolf learned the art of thatching from John Letts, an expert in medieval thatching techniques, grower of ancient long-straw wheat varieties and founder of the Oxfordshire Bread Group. Original recording in HD was made for the BBC2 programme 'Britain in a Day,' but the process for submitting it caused us to post it here instead. Iron Age Hillfort, The Lost World of Ely - First Light
This touching documentary was made by pupils from Trelai primary school using live action and animation. It explores the colourful history of the ancient fort in Ely, an area of Cardiff thought to be the oldest settlement in Wales. The area survived many changes from its beginnings as an Iron Age hillfort, through the Roman invasion, a Norman church was built and then was finally used as farmland to feed the growing population of Cardiff. Filmmakers Aged 9-10 First Light inspires young filmmaking talent and is funded by the British Film Institute (BFI). Hike to Dolebury Warren near the village of Churchill in North Somerset, UK
We had an interesting walk and picnic lunch at the top of Dolebury Warren with the David Johnson family who live just below in the village of Churchill in North Somerset, UK Dolebury Warren is a 90.6 hectare biological Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). There is evidence of occupation of the site during the Iron Age. The defenses and Celtic field systems at Dolebury date back to the 300s-200s BCE, though they might mask earlier developments.. The rectangular fort commands views over the surrounding countryside. It was protected by a limestone rampart with a ditch and counterscarp on all sides but the South. There is an inturned entrance on the West and an annexe of 0.4ha protecting the easier Eastern approach. Finds include Iron-age and Romano-British materials. In addition to the remains of double ramparts of an Iron Age hill fort still being visible there is also evidence of a medieval rabbit warren. Dolebury Warren is a very good example of a medieval/post medieval rabbit warren which was used to breed rabbits, providing valuable meat and fur. The warren is completely enclosed by the substantial ramparts of the Iron Age hillfort, Dolebury Camp. Many warrens were surrounded by banks or walls to prevent the rabbits from escaping; escaped rabbits caused damage to nearby farmland and meant a loss in profit. [5]. Reusing the hillforts defenses as a boundary provided an ideal location in which to breed rabbits.

Uffington castle Iron age hillfort
Uffington Castle iron age hillfort and views of the beautiful surrounding countryside, with music by Alan Stivell. Uffington Castle is all that remains of an early Iron Age (with underlying Bronze Age) hill fort in Oxfordshire, England. It covers about 32000 square metres and is surrounded by two earth banks separated by a ditch with an entrance in the eastern end. A second entrance in the western end was apparently blocked up a few centuries after it was built. Defensive ditch sectionThe original defensive ditch was V-shaped with a small box rampart in front and a larger one behind it. Timber posts stood on the ramparts. Later the ditch was deepened and the extra material dumped on top of the ramparts to increase their size. A parapet wall of sarsen stones lined the top of the innermost rampart. It is very close to the Uffington White Horse. Excavations have indicated that it was probably built in the 7th or 8th century BC and continued to be occupied throughout the Iron Age. Isolated postholes were found inside the fort but no evidence of buildings. Pottery, loom weights and animal bone finds suggest some form of occupation however. The most activity appears to have been during the Roman period as the artefacts recovered from the upper fills of the ditch attest. The ramparts were remodelled to provide more entrances and a shrine seems to have been built in the early fourth century AD. Two oblong mounds, one containing 46 Romano-British burials and one containing 8 Saxon ...

Cissbury Ring Iron age hillfort
The Iron Age Fort at Cissbury was a tribal headquarters and refuge in times of danger. An amazing estimate of some 60000 tons of chalk were excavated from the ditch area to build the fine ramparts we see today. Even they are a shadow of the former great earthwork which may have employed 200 men and taken two years to complete. It was awesome and spectacular, surmounted by an impressive enclosing mile-long defence wall of massive hewn timbers. There were originally between 8000 - 12000 of these massive lumber supports surrounding Cissbury, each about 15 feet high. A construction of no mean feat in those days. By 50 BC the Cissbury Camp appears to have gone out of use as a fortress and was abandoned to the wind and rain. It took the Romans to see the potential of the downland and they began to cultivate considerable areas of land within the ramparts. It was possibly administered and occupied as a military station and a unit of some long forgotten legion was probably quartered on the sitelooking out to sea. The Romano-British presence eventually diminished on Cissbury and the landscape reverted back to a deserted open space. Around AD 1005-1020 the Saxon Royal Mint at Steyning was transferred to Cissbury (possibly through the threat of invasion). The coins were then minted within the embankments of the old disused fort. The exact spot of this mint has never been located, although over thirty 'Cissbury' minted coins are in existence. Nearer to our own time, during Elizabethan ...

Rev. In Jin Moon's Lovin' LLM Sermon, August 7, 2011
Sermon Notes, August 7, 2011
In Jin Moon
1. In Jin Nim greeted everyone. (The applause was especially enthusiastic – with all the middle school camp kids in the audience). She just got back from Las Vegas at two o'clock this morning. True Parents (True Parents) send us their greetings!
True Parents at Hoon Dok Hae in Las Vegas, August 6, 2011
2. In Jin Nim reported to True Parents about the WFWP 19th annual conference -- they were delighted to hear about it. Congratulations to the WFWP. In Jin Nim recognized Angelika Selle (President) and the team that did such a phenomenal job. The conference highlighted the beauty of women from all around the world who came to discuss how to unlock the power and beauty of relationships. In Jin Nim had the honor of being the keynote speaker at one of the morning plenary sessions. To come together in the spirit of the feminine and in the celebration of the feminine and discuss amongst themselves how they can be the agent of change to usher in the new millennium. It was an incredibly powerful and profoundly moving experience for In Jin Nim. In Jin Nim could not attend the gala in the evening which she heard was a great success (she had to fly out to Las Vegas to report to True Parents) – with lovely dancers and a comedian who brought down the roof. True Parents and (especially) True Mother were delighted to hear that the WFWP had completed its 19th conference
3. Whenever In Jin Nim visits True Parents she always is so grateful – realizing what an incredible time we are living in. She likes to say that this is the time of the breaking news. Jesus Christ brought the good news – truly helping all of humanity to understand the meaning of what it is to truly love one another and encouraging women to live an inspired and true life. But now is the time of the breaking news because now we are not only talking about understanding and substantiating and applying true love and true life in our lives but really coming to substantiate the true lineage of God – grafting on to the heavenly lineage and becoming one family under God. So – it is an incredibly exciting time for all of us here working in the Ministry
4. As we think about each Sunday and what topics and issues will be discussed – they (Lovin' Life team) are always tickled pink when they realize that so much of the inspiration comes from the enthusiasm of the young people which they show to the Lovin' Life Ministry every Sunday – and enthusiasm that is shared all around the country in 100 different satellite locations across America. "We know that when we can see and experience the inspired youth, truly encouraged in the spirit of true love – wanting to build that ideal family, society, nation, and world, we know that it is not just a dream that we are dealing with, when we think or ponder or ruminate on the topic on this beautiful world of peace, but it is something tangible, something that we are working towards each and every day, something that we can build upon starting with you and me."
5. As In Jin Nim was taking the trip to Las Vegas, on the way back going through LA they had to wait for a plane to come and replace the plane they were supposed to be on. And so they had some delay time. People started gathering in small groups and talking with each other. And In Jin Nim noticed in one corner three young teenage girls. They were beautiful girls huddled together looking at fashion magazines. Glamour, Elle, Cosmopolitan, People, Us, (and others). They were pointing at different people and things exclaiming, "I want to be like her, I want to have that, she has legs 6 miles long, her body is perfect, 36-24-32." In Jin Nim listened to their conversation – "you know, these people they have it all, they're beautiful, they have their cars, mansions, iPods and iPad's, fabulous girlfriends and boyfriends, all the designer clothes (In Jin Nim named the brands and designers – "they knew their stuff" – designer bags and shoes). When I become rich and successful these are the things that I want!"
6. These ladies were between 15 and 17. They were infused with this incredible desire – wanting the latest designer clothing and bags (In Jin Nim gave several designer names). It is interesting how, it doesn't matter where we come from, what culture we are born into, what race we belong to – in the journey through life, on the road of life where we come to understand what we are all about and who we are and what we need to do and what kind of people we need to be – there is this word that we come face-to-face with from time to time – the word 'desire.'
7. Many times we say to ourselves that we desire things. We desire all these things that we want to acquire – we desire. In Jin Nim often thinks, yes we desire all these things, we desire X – (fill in the box). But many times in life there are other things at play, not just we as individuals, but there are also supernatural things at play, there are th

The Seven Ages Of Rock Pt 4 "Never Say Die"
Heavy metal is the music critics love to hate, but also the longest lasting mainstay of rock music. More than any other band at the time, Black Sabbath were influenced by their surroundings, heavily industrialised Birmingham. This was even more true for guitarist Tony Iommi, who cut off the tips of two fingers in a steel factory. When he tried to solve this problem by melting a washing up liquid bottle, and forming two 'thimbles' for his fingers, he found that by tuning his guitar down three tones (to C#), he could play just as easily, and also get a very different, altogether much darker sound (although this wasn't used until their third album). Another inspiration for the band came from the movie theatre across the street. Sabbath decided that if people were eager to pay money to be scared, then maybe they should play scary music.
In 1971, when Deep Purple were in Montreux to record the album Machine Head, they were themselves scared by a fire in the casino when "some stupid with a flare gun burned the place to the ground" during a concert by Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention. Since their recording studio was also in the casino, they decided to make the album in their hotel. On the last day they needed to record one more song and decided to simply tell the story of their recording session, which became the lyrics to Smoke on the Water.
Judas Priest introduced twin lead guitars in rock music. When in 1976 Punk dominated the rock scene, they adopted a leather and studs look, which they thought went rather well with their macho look, not knowing the gay background it came from - singer Rob Halford, who suggested it, hadn't yet 'come out of the closet'. Priest were rewarded for continuing Heavy Metal when it slumped in the late 1970s. But a few years later, the New Wave of British Heavy Metal was spearheaded by Iron Maiden. In the US, a new twist emerged with Glam metal, with a fluffy hair spray look inspired by Hollywood and made known by Mötley Crüe. Sabbath's Ozzy Osbourne made the most unexpected return in rock, despite his 'recreational pursuits' (involving lots of alcohol and cocaine).
By the end of the 1980s, Metal had become too commercial for some fans, with groups like the W.A.S.P., Hanoi Rocks and Poison having huge success. Influenced by the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, another new sound had risen to prominence in the US, where metal had a huge following: thrash metal, a style that went beyond in many respects, being faster and heavier than anything that had come before. But playing the guitar ever faster had reached a ceiling and at the turn of the decade, Metallica, one of the inventors of thrash, decided to turn that around and adopt a very slow, heavy, sound. The result was 'The Black Album' which went on to sell over 15 million copies and "proved that metal, never in fashion, but never out of fashion, will always just keep on going".

Romans buried alive by tons of gravel and topped with a Bovis housing estate
On the last day of the dig project manager Mark Atkinson gives a lucid overview of the Iron Age-Roman-Saxon settlement at Elms Farm as he walks across a small part of the massive site where his team were allowed to probe. The views expressed on the video are his, but the views expressed right here are mine, and let me make it perfectly clear, this unique settlement should never have been covered with much needed homes. There has been a settlement in and around the Heybridge area since Pre-Roman times near the River Blackwater. England's heritage exists to make sure the best of the past is kept to enrish our lives today and in the future . . . sadly a housing development has covered all historical traces of the first Blackwater estate. Investigation was carried out in two phases (1993 and 1994/5) by Essex County Council's Field Archeological Unit, led by Mr Atkinson, revealed a large sprawling pre-Roman late Iron Age settlement, dating to around 50 BC, with enclosure ditches, sporadic clusters of roundhouses, and numerous pits. Everything had pointed to a wealthy settlement, with a large temple complex, that owed its existence to the river and even before the Romans took over Ancient Britons had traded extensively with the continent. Economic activity in the town was undoubtedly as important as religious, and both artefactual and structural evidence indicates the presence of extensive manufacturing processes. Iron, lead, and copper alloys were all being worked, probably to ...
