Beniamino Gigli - Nessun Dorma (Studio Recording)
Beniamino Gigli (March 20, 1890 - November 30, 1957) was an Italian singer, widely regarded as one of the greatest operatic tenors of all time. He was blessed with a voice of immense beauty and technical facility but, regrettably, he was not always the most tasteful and stylish of singers, especially in the latter stages of his career. Here he sings the aria 'Nessun dorma' from Puccini's Turandot, in a studio recording. Listeners to "Opera Fanatic" on WKCR-FM voted for Favorite Tenor of the Century. 47 singers received a grand total of 600 votes. Gigli came in 4th place. The first five places were: 1st: Corelli, with 185 votes or 30.8% of the vote 2nd: Björling 177 (29.5%) 3rd: Caruso 69 (11.5%) 4th: Gigli 50 (8.3%); 5th: Vickers 17 (2.8%)

Beniamino Gigli - Mamma
Beniamino Gigli _ Mamma This song was given to me by my favorite Italian friend. Im granted his precious friendship. I love hearing this song, esp. the version sung by Gigli. I can hear it over and over again... I've been searching for it on YouTube, but haven't found it yet. So, uploading this to share with u all is my way to thank to that friend of mine. Enjoy it! Sento la mano tua stanca: cerca i miei riccioli d'or. For English translation: soundofthunder.wordpress.com Mamma, I'm so happy because I return to you. My song tells you. It's the most beautiful dream for me! Mamma I'm so happy. Why should one live so far away? Mamma, just only for you my song is flying. Mamma, you will be with me, you will not be alone anymore! How much I love you! These words of love, sighed for you by my heart, maybe are not used anymore. Mamma! But my most beautiful song is you! It is you for a lifetime (you are my life). And in my life I will not leave you again ...

Beniamino Gigli - Core 'Ngrato - Canzone Napolitana - HMV 78rpm
For me this is the best performance of this popular song. No one sings it quite like Gigli. The record is rather worn . This was a great family favorite and played many many times. HMV DB 6463. 78rpm.

Gigli - Pearlfishers - Nadir's aria
Another specific Gigli request. Beniamino Gigli singing Mi Par D'Udir Ancora from Act 1 of Bizet's Pearlfishers, recorded for HMV in 1931. Interesting to compare with the Tino Rossi version I posted previously. Totally different. I'm not going to offer an opinion other than to say that it is beautiful singing

BENIAMINO GIGLI - RIGOLETTO QUARTET 1927 HQ FOOTAGE
with Jane Gordon mezzo, soprano Marion Talley and baritone Giuseppe De Luca. Proper recording and playback of sound requires exact standardization of camera and projector speed. Before sound, 16 frames per second (fps) was the supposed norm, but practice varied widely. Cameras were often undercranked or overcranked in order to improve exposures or for dramatic effect. Projectors were commonly run too fast in order to shorten running time and squeeze in extra shows. Variable frame rate, however, made sound unlistenable, and a new, strict standard of 24 fps was soon established.[100] Sound also forced the abandonment of the noisy arc lights used for filming in studio interiors. The switch to quiet incandescent illumination in turn required a switch to more expensive film stock. The sensitivity of the new panchromatic film delivered superior image tonal quality and gave directors the freedom to shoot scenes at lower light levels than was previously practical

Beniamino Gigli 1935 .- Mattinata .- Leoncavallo
Followin the death of Caruso in 1921, the mantle of greatest tenor in the word fell naturally, almost inevitable, round the shoulders of the young Beniamino Gigli. Thus the Italian monopoly continued until the late 1930s, when singers such as Jussi Björling arrived on the inernational stage. Loencavallos Mattinata seems like to be composed especially to Beniamino Gigli

Beniamino Gigli - Che gelida manina (Studio Recording)
Beniamino Gigli (March 20, 1890 - November 30, 1957) was an Italian singer, widely regarded as one of the greatest operatic tenors of all time. He was blessed with a voice of immense beauty and technical facility but, regrettably, he was not always the most tasteful and stylish of singers, especially in the latter stages of his career. Here he sings 'Che gelida manina' from La Boheme, studio recording. This particular piece has been uploaded before, but mine is in better sound quality (in my opinion). Of particular interest is how Gigli approaches the C in 'la speranza'. Where most tenors would sing 'la spera~C~anza', Gigli sings 'la~C~a speranza'. Interesting to note and I've never heard anyone else sing it like that.

Beniamino Gigli gives a little bel canto masterclass
Beniamino Gigli, tenor Gigli gives a tip when talking about vocal technique. Translation: - "Therefore, I'll do a breath, a breath without diaphragm. I'll tell you that I'll do that over the breath: - M'ama, sì m'ama lo vedo... lo vedo (highlight of the aria Una Furtiva Lagrima, from L'Elisir D'Amore - Donizetti). It's not necessary the diaphragm. Why? I'll say: this 'canto' is supported only over the breath, over the 'fiato', but when: - quando io mi debbo impegna-aa-re... now is necessary, when is need to pledge, is necessary to find the diaphragm." Sorry for my imperfect italian translation, that's not my natural language.
