Soldiers killed at the battle of The Somme will be remembered in a full weekend of commemorations in Salford in July - including the world premiere of a new, musical tribute ... City Mayor Ian Stewart said ... The first half will feature works by UK composers George Butterworth and Cecil Coles who died and Ivor Gurney who was shot and gassed in the Somme battle ... It will be recorded for broadcast on BBC Radio 3....

Poet, literary commentator, columnist, sometimes actor and former British soldier PJ (Patrick Joseph) Kavanagh cut a striking figure with his strong, handsome, hawk face, his pipe, hat, scarf, tweeds and air of determination and shyness ... P. J. Kavanagh was the natural heir to Louis MacNeice. He praised MacNeice’s “wristy” manner and that is the key to his own best poetry. Commentators tend to refer to his nature poetry in the line of Edward Thomas and Ivor Gurney, his Catholicism, but like no other poet he captured that MacNeiceian rhythmic kick that drives the poem on. Comparison with Edward Thomas, who, admittedly, Kanavagh loved, isn’t enough ... it cannot be faked ... ....
