Etching and Drypoint Printmaking
Etching and drypoint are combined on a copper plate for this 7-minute demonstration, which is Bill Ritchie's style of testing each of the etching presses that he makes before sending it to its owner. You don't see how he made this plate, but you catch a glimpse of making changes to the etching using drypoint. Bill is focussed on test-printing his 43rd Mini Halfwood Press.

Circuit Skills: Circuit Board Etching
Making your own printed circuit board can be a truly satisfying process, tying together electronics and the handmade craft of etching. It's the most accurate way to build a circuit short of sending away to a PCB manufacturer and it's a lot more fun (+ cheaper too!). For a full list of materials used plus more tips for etching & drilling head over to MAKE's site - blog.makezine.com

How to Etch with White Vinegar (Kitchen Lithography Variation)
Last week I happened upon videos about kitchen lithography. It got me very excited! I couldn't wait to try the process out for myself. But, what occurred to me was that it was the acidic properties of cola that was responsible for the etch. This led me to believe that white vinegar might be a more practical alternative to etch with. Practical in the sense that it's just as acidic as cola, can be re-used many times, thereby becoming more cost effective. As you can see by the results on the video, the process works equally as well using white vinegar as the etch instead of cola. Here is a list of the materials you'll need to do the process yourself: 1. Heavy Duty aluminum foil (Use dull side to work on) 2. Gloves 3. Litho crayon 4. Piece of plexi-glass 5. Vegetable oil 6. Paper towels 7. Plastic tub 8. White vinegar 9. Water 10. Etching or relief ink 11. Brayer 12. Sponges 13. Trays for water 14. Paper 15. Spoon or etching press I plan to try more experiments using white vinegar in the future. Will post more results for you to see. PS I had two semesters of lithography at community college so I know what I'm talking about. :) (ha ha!)

Etching a Copper Plate
With the help of Muriatic Acid and Hydrogen Peroxide, I was able to etch my favorite picture onto a copper plate. The picture is a disgustingly cute portrait of my fiance, Courtney, and myself in Cayucos, CA. the song is "Knock Knock" by Dan Tyminski. Update: Courtney and I got engaged at the same location as this picture! 3/14/09

In this cyclical fairy tale, a man and a woman are cursed to be forever apart. We never see them inhabit the same space but yet we feel that there's a connection between them. One common element is that they both have the power to transform into animals. But when they do they are compelled to hunt down and destroy the other. They become blind to their passions and are overwhelmed by their instincts.
Technique: Most of the rough animation was prepared in Flash along with the corresponding color fill layers. The drawings were then printed, traced, and cleaned up on paper to achieve a more organic quality. They were then re-scanned and composited in After Effects. Some of the drawings were etched on acetate and rubbed with ink. The backgrounds were a combination of paintings, collages, and photos. The animation was rendered in HD and transfered to 35mm film.

Nike+ City Runs
For the launch of the Nike Free Run+ 2 City Pack series, YesYesNo was invited to develop software that would allow runners to create dynamic paintings with their feet using their Nike+ GPS run data. During the two day workshop at Nike headquarters, we invited the participants to record their runs and then using our custom software we imported the metrics from their run, to create visuals based on the speed, consistency and unique style of each person's run.
Using the software the participants were able to play with the mapping and adjust the composition of their run which was then outputted as a high resolution print for them to take home. We also worked with the Innovation Lab at Nike to laser etch the runner's name, the distance they ran and their run path onto a custom fabricated shoe box, which contained a pair of the 'City Pack' shoes from their city of origin.
The second part was a retail installation which visualized a year's worth
of runs from the Nike+ website. We made custom software that played back
runs throughout three cities: New York, London and Tokyo. The runs showed
tens of thousands of peoples runs animating the city and bringing it to
life. You can see individual runs, as well as the collective energy of
all the urban runners.

Produced in collaboration with DualForces.
YesYesNo Team: Zach Lieberman, Emily Gobeille and Theo Watson.
Software was made with openFrameworks v007b and uses Moka's ofxTileSaver addon.

Union Foundry T-0001 Roto-Fix Tool
Designers/Inventors: Joshua Kampa (openbicycle) Aaron Panone (aarn)
After a year of development, incubation, and manufacturing research, Union Foundry is proud to present our first official product. The inaugural, limited first run of T-0001 was designed on kitchen checks and cocktail napkins at our local. Just days later, the initial design still just a sketch, prototypes were milled and sent downtown to be tested by Boston bike couriers and other local riders.
When the final design was locked the tools were machined less than a mile from the place of its inception, then delivered - by bicycle - to be hand polished by the same finishing shop that worked with Somerville bicycle legends Merlin and Fat Chance. The military-grade stainless steel parts were polished to a jewelry-grade finish then shipped off to our laser shop to be etched by the same machinists that cut titanium parts for Independent Fabrication and Seven Cycles. Upon their return to Union Foundry headquarters, in the same building that housed Merlin Bicycles until the late-90s, packaging materials were hand cut and printed by local letter-press outfit Repeat Press, and then assembled and packaged for individual sale.
T-0001 eliminates the need to carry a lockring wrench and chainwhip in your tool bag. Using a simple rotafixing technique, This tool allows for effortless removal and installation of lockrings using nothing more than your bicycle chain. The proprietary eccentric cutout allows for the tool to accommodate all popular lockring sizes from the small Sugino type to over-sized Profile type. The seventeen tooth cog on the outer diameter of the tool can also be used with a normal 1/8"-width chainwhip when in the shop. The tooth profile on the outside of the tool stems back to the ANSI standard for half-inch pitch roller chains, allowing for optimal contact and power transfer from the chain to the lockring. Tired of breaking your knuckles using that Hozan to muscle off your lock ring? We were, too...
