Ufa train disaster
The Ufa train disaster happened on June 4, 1989 at 1:15 (local time) near the town of Asha in the Soviet Union on the Kuybyshev Railway. (Ufa is a much larger and commonly known city, which is situated not far from Asha). A liquefied petroleum gas explosion killed 575 and wounded 623 (some sources claim that up to 645 were killed and more than 700 wounded), making it the most deadly railway accident in Soviet history, as two trains passing each other threw sparks near a leaky pipeline. Both trains were carrying children; one returning from a holiday break on the Black Sea, one taking children there. The explosion was so powerful it blew out windows in Asha, eight miles (13 km) from the epicenter. The explosion is said to have been equal to 10 kilotons of TNT, almost as powerful as the Hiroshima explosion. Three hours before the explosion, engineers noticed a drop in the pressure, but they turned up the pressure back to normal instead of checking for leaks.

Ufa (Russian: Уфа́; IPA: [ʊˈfa]; Bashkir: Өфө) is the capital and largest city of the Republic of Bashkortostan, Russia. It is the industrial, economic, scientific and cultural center of the republic. Population: 1,062,300 (2010 Census preliminary results);^[6] 1,042,437 (2002 Census);^[7] 1,082,052 (1989 Census).^[11]

The newspaper English Russia and the President of Bashkortostan coined Ufa as the Muslim centre of Russia.^[12]^[13]

The city began as a fortress built on the orders of Ivan the Terrible in 1574, and originally bore the name of the hill it stood on, Tura-Tau. It was granted town status in 1586.

In the 18th century Ufa evolved into an administrative, trading, manufacturing and cultural center of Russia. Ufa Municipal Public Bank was established on December 15, 1876.

In 1918, Ufa was the residence of the Provisional All-Russian Government.

On June 14, 1922, the Decree of the All-Union Central Executive Committee abolished Ufa Governorate, and Ufa became the capital of the Bashkir Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic.

The discovery of oil in Bashkiria made Ufa one of the centers of the Soviet oil extracting and oil refining industries.

During World War II, following eastward Soviet retreat in 1941, Ufa became the wartime seat of the Soviet Ukrainian government.

Administrative and municipal status [link]

Apart from being the capital of the republic, Ufa serves as the administrative center of Ufimsky District,^[3] although it is not administratively a part of it.^[1] Administratively, along with twenty-four rural localities, it is incorporated as a city of republic significance—an administrative unit with the status equal to that of the districts.^[1] Municipally, the city of republic significance of Ufa is incorporated as Ufa Urban Okrug.^[4]

Ufa is a donor of the republic's and federal budgets. About 62.8 % of tax revenues accumulated on the territory of Ufa City municipal district of Bashkortostan Republic are directed to the federal budget and 29 % to the republic's budget.

Transport [link]

Ufa is linked by railways to the rest of Russia, having a railway station on a historic branch of the Transsib. Ufa is the only city connected to Moscow by more than one Federal highway. The M7 motorway links the city to Kazan and Moscow and the M5 motorway links Ufa to Moscow and to the Asian part of Russia.

Ufa International Airport has international flights to UAE, Turkey, Greece, Egypt, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, as well as domestic flights to many Russian cities and towns.

Ethnically, the republic is dominated by Russians (50.2%), Bashkirs (14.8%), and Tatars (28.1%). Other ethnicities over 1000 people include Ukrainians (17,772 people), Chuvash (10,586 people), Mari (9,616 people), Belarusians (5,556 people), Mordovians (3,975 people), Armenians (2,822 people), Germans (2,213 people), Jews (2,082 people), and Azeris (2,075 people).^[18]

Ufa is situated in eastern Europe near its land boundary with Asia, at the confluence of the Belaya and Ufa Rivers, on low hills to the west of the southern Urals. The city stretches 50 kilometers (31 mi) from southwest to northeast and occupies the area of over 710 square kilometers (270 sq mi).^{[citation needed]}

The bodies of local self-government of Ufa are:

Council, a representative body. Formed of 35 deputies for 4 years.
Chairman of the Board - the head of the urban okrug. Term of 4 years.
Urban Okrug Administration. The structure of the administration approved by the Council on the proposal of the Head of the Administration.
Head of the Administration manages the administration on the principles of unity of command. He is appointed under a contract entered into by the results of the competition. Term of office of the Head of the Administration limited to the period of office of the Council of the convocation.^[20]

The Ufa Arena

Ufa's association football club FC Ufa plays in the Russian Second Division. Ufa is the biggest city in Europe never to have been represented in top-flight football.^[21] The city ice hockey club Salavat Yulaev Ufa plays in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL), being the KHL Champion (2010/2011) and two-time Russia Champion (2007/2008, 2010/2011). The Ural Volleyball club are also based in Ufa.

Religion [link]

The main religious confessions in the city are Islam (Sunni) and Orthodox Christianity^{[citation needed]} (the city - the center of the Russian Orthodox Diocese of Ufa and Sterlitamak). Ufa is the seat of the central authorities and Mufti Central Spiritual Directorate of Muslims of Russia and European CIS countries.

The majority of the population are adherents of Orthodox Christianity with an estimated 50% being Orthodox and the remaining 45% made up of a mainly Islam with small numbers of Jews and other religions.^{[citation needed]}

Ruslan Karimovich Nigmatullin (Russian: Руслан Каримович Нигматуллин, Tatar Cyrillic: Руслан Кәрим улы Нигъмәтуллин, Latin: Ruslan Kərim ulı Niğmətullin) (born 7 October 1974 in Kazan, Tatarstan, Soviet Union) is a retired association footballer who played goalkeeper of Tatar ethnicity. He has appeared for the Russian national team 24 times (including 5 Olympic appearances) and was their starting keeper at the 2002 World Cup. He was voted Russian Player of the Year 2001 and is considered the best Russian goalkeeper of this period.

Despite officially retiring from football in February 2006, in September 2008, Nigmatullin decided to make a deal with FC SKA Rostov-on-Don, Russian club from First Division. After playing for another year for 3 different clubs, he retired again in November 2009.

Time in Israel [link]

Nigmatullin signed with Israeli club, Maccabi Ahi Nazareth for the 2009–10 season. His start was a shaky one but his performance improved over the weeks as he acclimated to Israel. Nevertheless, he requested to leave the club in November 2009.^[1]
