Egypt moves to curb population explosion - 21 Feb 09
The Arab world's most populous nation is reviving a family planning programme to encourage parents to consider having fewer children. Egypt's population growth rate is two and a half times that of China, and about the same as India. The government is aiming to bring down the average family size from 3 children to 2 by 2017. Amr El-Kahky has more.

101 East - Indonesian morality debate - Oct 29 2008 part 1
Indonesia, as the world's most populous Muslim country, has a long history as a tolerant and pluralistic society. But controversial new anti-pornography legislation has sparked debate across the nation. The law criminalises all public acts and material capable of violating community morality. But critics say the legislation is too vague, overlaps existing legislation and tramples local customs in a country of ethnic, religious and cultural diversity. This week, 101 East travels to the holiday island of Bali to ask if Indonesia can succeed in enforcing a new moral tone across its vast archipelago.

National Anthem (India) Janaganamana Instrumental & Animation
REPUBLIC DAY & Independence day song-kidsone [The Republic of India is a country in South Asia. It is the seventh-largest country by geographical area, the second-most populous country, and the most populous democracy in the world. Bounded by the Indian Ocean on the south, the Arabian Sea on the west, and the Bay of Bengal on the east, India has a coastline of 7517 kilometres (4700 mi).It is bordered by Pakistan to the west; China, Nepal, and Bhutan to the north; and Bangladesh and Myanmar to the east. India is in the vicinity of Sri Lanka, and the Maldives in the Indian Ocean. Home to the Indus Valley Civilisation and a region of historic trade routes and vast empires, the Indian subcontinent was identified with its commercial and cultural wealth for much of its long history. Four major religions, Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism originated here, while Zoroastrianism, Judaism, Christianity and Islam arrived in the first millennium CE and shaped the region's diverse culture. Gradually annexed by the British East India Company from the early eighteenth century and colonised by the United Kingdom from the mid-nineteenth century, India became an independent nation in 1947 after a struggle for independence that was marked by widespread non-violent resistance. India is a republic consisting of 28 states and seven union territories with a parliamentary system of democracy. "Buffalo Warrior" - DOCUMENTARY FOR NAT GEO / ANIMAL PLANET
A few sequences of the documentary Buffalo Warrior I offline edited, on-lined and coloured.
This programme was delivered to National Geographic and Animal Planet on High Def and broadcast internationally.
Its about a conservation warrior (Lindsay Hunt) who is fighting to keep the Kruger Park (South Africa) Buffalo population alive as they are dying from TB. A disease that is airborne.
The most endearing part is that Lindsay used to hunt buffalo himself but after one particular day he decided to put down his rifle and save the population instead.
A very moving story about how one man succeeded in his beliefs when many said it could not be done.

Toledo, Spain
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Founded 7th century
Toledo (Latin: Toletum) is a municipality located in central Spain, 70 km south of Madrid. It is the capital of the province of Toledo and of the autonomous community of Castile-La Mancha. It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986 for its extensive cultural and monumental heritage as one of the former capitals of the Spanish Empire and place of coexistence of Christian, Jewish and Moorish cultures. Many famous people and artists were born or lived in Toledo, including Al-Zarqali, Garcilaso de la Vega, Alfonso X and El Greco. It was also the place of important historic events such as the Visigothic Councils of Toledo. As of 2007, the city has a population of 78,618 and an area of 232.1 km² (89.59 square miles).
Toledo once served as the capital city of Visigothic Spain, beginning with Liuvigild (Leovigild), and was the capital until the Moors conquered Iberia in the 8th century. Under the Caliphate of Cordoba, Toledo enjoyed a golden age. This extensive period is known as La Convivencia, i.e. the co-existence of Jews, Christians, and Muslims. Under Arab rule, Toledo was called Tulaytulah (Arabic طليطلة, academically transliterated Ṭulayṭulah).
On May 25, 1085 Alfonso VI of Castile took Toledo and established direct personal control over the Moorish city from which he had been exacting tribute, and ending the mediaeval Taifa's Kingdom of Toledo . This was the first concrete step taken by the combined kingdom of Leon-Castile in the Reconquista by Christian forces.
Toledo was famed for its production of iron and especially of swords and the city is still a center for the manufacture of knives and other steel implements. When Philip II moved the royal court from Toledo to Madrid in 1561, the old city went into a slow decline from which it never recovered.
Toledo's Alcázar became renowned in the 19th and 20th centuries as a military academy. At the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in 1936 its garrison was famously besieged by Republican forces.
Arts and culture
Toledo reached its zenith in the era of Islamic Caliphate. Historian P. de Gayangos writes:
The Muslim scientists of this age were not rivaled in the world. Perhaps among their greatest feats were the famous waterlocks of Toledo.[1]
The old city is located on a mountaintop with a 150 degrees view, surrounded on three sides by a bend in the Tagus River, and contains many historical sites, including the Alcázar, the cathedral (the primate church of Spain), and the Zocodover, a central market place.
From the 4th century to the 16th century about thirty synods were held at Toledo. The earliest, directed against Priscillian, assembled in 400. At the synod of 589 the Visigothic King Reccared declared his conversion from Arianism; the synod of 633 decreed uniformity of liturgy throughout the Visigothic kingdom and took stringent measures against baptized Jews who had relapsed into their former faith. The council of 681 assured to the archbishop of Toledo the primacy of Spain.
As nearly one hundred early canons of Toledo found a place in the Decretum Gratiani, they exerted an important influence on the development of ecclesiastical law. The synod of 1565–1566 concerned itself with the execution of the decrees of the Council of Trent; and the last council held at Toledo, 1582–1583, was guided in detail by Philip II.
Toledo was famed for religious tolerance and had large communities of Muslims and Jews until they were expelled from Spain in 1492 (Jews) and 1502 (Muslims). Today's city contains the religious monuments the Synagogue of Santa María la Blanca, the Synagogue of El Transito, Mosque of Cristo de la Luz and the church of San Sebastián dating from before the expulsion, still maintained in good condition. Among Ladino-speaking Sephardi Jews, in their various diasporas, the family name Toledano is still prevalent - indicating an ancestry traced back to this city (the name is also attested among non-Jews in various Spanish-speaking countries).
In the 13th century, Toledo was a major cultural center under the guidance of Alfonso X, called "El Sabio" ("the Wise") for his love of learning. The program of translations, begun under Archbishop Raymond of Toledo, continued to bring vast stores of knowledge to Europe by rendering great academic and philosophical works in Arabic into Latin. The Palacio de Galiana, built in the Mudéjar style, is one of the monuments that remain from that period.
The Cathedral of Toledo (Catedral de Toledo) was built between 1226-1493 and modeled after the Bourges Cathedral, though it

ENTIRELY NEW FORMS OF LIGHTNING HAVE BEEN DISCOVERED UP TO 1000 TIMES BIGGER THAN ANY BOLT PREVIOUSLY SEEN. WHILE NORMAL LIGHTNING FIRES DOWN BELOW CLOUDS, THESE GIANT BOLTS SHOOT UP, STUNNING EXPERTS WITH IMAGES OF LIGHTNING 80 KILOMETRES HIGH.
THIS LIGHTNING, SIX TIMES MORE POWERFUL THAN PASSENGER PLANES ARE DESIGNED TO WITHSTAND, MAY BE THE REAL KILLER IN A SPATE OF BAFFLING AIR DISASTERS.

Nigerian sex workers in Larissa, Greece.
Nigerian girls appeared on the streets of Athens during the Olympic Games of 2004. They never left. Nobody knew where they came from, nor did anybody care.
Most of them arrived transiting through Italy and France.
The EU’s invisible borders have made it easy for traffickers to move girls around. And Nigeria has its own powerful –and highly lucrative– criminal ring. Although it may cost 1000 Euros to transport girls to their destination cities, the latter will be forced to pay back their traffickers up to 80,000 Euros. And girls are kept from rebelling by the strong hold of voodoo oaths –and threats to their families.
Larissa is a city with a population of 200.000. It lies between the two major cities of Greece, Athens and Thessaloniki.
It is a major agricultural centre and a national transportation hub.
I met Sonia, a 22 years old Nigerian, back in 2008. At that time she used to work as a prostitute in the streets of Athens for 15-30 Euros per customer.
She had no passport or any residence permit. She had to run when the police was raiding the historical centre of Athens, where she usually worked, because as she used to say: I’ m double illegal.
The last two years a series of town-planning projects aimed at revamping the city’s run-down historic center. Athens’s Mayor stressed that thriving crime in the area – including the trade in drugs and prostitution – posed a risk to public health and safety.
As a result of that, ‘cleaning up’ operations by the police took place. The illegal immigrants were targeted.
It’ s been extremely difficult for the Nigerians to work in the streets since then.
Many girls were deported back to their countries and others had to look for work outside the capital city.
Sonia along with two other Nigerian women, Valentina and Amanda, decided to look for work in the city of Larissa.
Girls were told that police checks were not so strict in the countryside. They also knew some other Nigerians that had been working already in Larissa.
A cheap hotel in the city centre of Larissa is where Sonia stays. She shares a room with two more Nigerian girls. Twenty more girls are spread in other rooms of the same building.
I spent three days with them, trying to reveal through their daily life and their habits, some aspects of their personality.
I intentionally avoided following them at the bars where they work because I didn’t want the cliché photo approach of sex workers with customers, etc.
I gave them a voice, through the video recording, to explain how they came to Greece at first place as well as talking about their past life (Valentina with her children’s dvd from London).
Sonia insisted, as the other girls too, that they work without a pimp and that not all the girls are victims of trafficking.
They said that they were told and they believed that Europe was a promised land; where you can one way or another make a fortune easily.
Following them during their daytime walks in Larissa and sharing some of their free time with them in the hotel some conclusions were obvious: The girls lead a life apart, like most of the migrant workers, not having integrated at all in the local society. They spend most of their time watching Nigerian TV series and listening to African music.
Greeks in the countryside are not used to see a lot of black people. Their being aware of the fact that the African girls are in their hometown to work as prostitutes makes them behave in a funny way, mostly by staring at them persistently.
They live a ‘normal’ life, mainly listening to music, watching TV, cooking, shopping.
Their dream is to get married with a local Greek. This would allow them stop working at the bars as well as having the opportunity of becoming legal.

Nigerians flee to Cameroon to escape sectarian violence
In hopes of escaping spate of tit-for-tat sectarian violence, Nigerians in country's south seek refuge in neighbouring Cameroon. Nigerians have fled in droves to neighbouring Cameroon to escape violence claimed by the Islamist Boko Haram group and revenge attacks by Christians. "Everybody is insecure in Nigeria. The fear is all-pervading," said a Nigerian Christian priest, speaking on condition of anonymity, in Fotokol, a Cameroonian border town where dozens have taken shelter in the last few weeks. It is located about 100 kilometres (60 miles) from the Nigerian city of Maiduguri, the bastion of the shadowy Boko Haram sect that has been blamed for a slew of terror attacks that have sowed panic in Africa's most populous nation. Nigeria, Africa's most populous nation and largest oil producer, is roughly divided between a mainly Muslim north and predominantly Christian south. Boko Haram has claimed to be fighting for an Islamic state in Nigeria's north, but its demands have varied. "Many Nigerians like myself have fled their villages in the south. We feel secure in Cameroon," the priest said in Fotokol. "That is why I am sheltered here," he added. He has rented a house that is about ten minutes by motorcycle to the nearest town in Nigeria, Gamboru Ngala, where he heads the local Catholic church. It is difficult to gauge the exact number of Nigerians who have fled to Cameroon as they cross the border illegally, but there are easily dozens sheltered here since the attacks and ...
