Sheikh Hasina's historic victory on maritime boundary
Heartiest Congratulations to the daughter of the Father of the Nation Hon'ble Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina & her government for the 'Historic Victory' against Myanmar on maritime boundary dispute. The 38 years long legal dispute on maritime boundaries between Myanmar & Bangladesh has come to end by the final verdict of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) on 14March 2012. Our long-waited sovereignty over the bay has been established through winning the battle on the 'basis of just'. Bangladesh's claims since 1974 to a full 200 nautical miles exclusive economic zone in the Bay of Bengal and to a substantial share of the outer continental shelf beyond 200 miles & absolute rights sustained following the verdict.

Maritime boundaries needs demarcation The maritime boundary of Bangladesh has not yet been demarcated A News and Images report Dhaka, July 31: The maritime boundary of Bangladesh has not yet been demarcated even though the neighbouring countries have done so and submitted the same to the UN. Politicians and social activists blamed the government for not demarcating the countrys maritime boundary. They ask the government to seek international help under the UN Conference on the Law of the Seas 1982in this regard. BNP leaders Barrister Maudud Ahmed and Brig. Gen. ASM Hannan Shah and other social activists said these at a roundtable discussion on Maritime Boundary Grasp and Bangladeshs Sovereignty organized by National Youth Forum at the Jatiya Press Club Friday. Maudud Ahmed asked the government to immediately go to the UN and make it aware of Bangladeshs present situation. He also asked the government not to take their concern as a political move to criticize it. Hannan Shah blamed government for not taking any step to determine the maritime boundary. Some participants suggested that the government to seek help under the UN Conference on the Law of the Seas 1982 to protect the countrys maritime boundary and save valuable resources that lie beneath the sea. North Brother
North Brother is video documentation of an urban exploration mission combined with a raft trip through New York City. Our crew paddled to North Brother Island, a small island in the East River that has been abandoned for over 50 years. The island, technically off limits and reachable only by water, required passing through Hell Gate, the dangerous confluence of the Harlem River, the East River and Long Island Sound.
The documentary also includes detailed historical background on the island, chronicling it’s most famous resident, Typhoid Mary, as well as the sinking of the General Slocum, New York City’s worst maritime loss of life disaster. As our crew floated downstream from the Bronx to Brooklyn, we contemplated the rewards of seeking adventure outside of traditional boundaries.

Aivazovsky – Painter of the sea
March 7 2001 - July 10, 2011, Bank Austria Kunstforum, Vienna
Bank Austria Kunstforum: "The Bank Austria Kunstforum will be presenting a premiere in spring 2011 - the breathtaking work of the Russian painter Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky (1817-1900): Aivazovsky was a living legend, celebrated in international exhibitions and is today a household word in Russia. Yet he is for the most part unknown beyond his national boundaries.
Aivazovsky was born in the port of Feodosia (today the Ukraine) on the Crimean peninsula. He studied painting at the Imperial Academy in St Petersburg and became court painter to Tsar Nicholas I. He was much travelled – he accompanied Tsarist military troops as a marine painter – but he was always drawn back to his home on the Black Sea. The elemental might of the sea is a central subject in Aivazovsky’s great oeuvre. For Aivazovsky, it is the ocean that nourishes all life, but which possesses cataclysmic power. The painter does not wish to show a freeze-frame of the subject, but far more express a generally applicable statement: the symbolism of a ship on the high seas is an allegory of human life. Becalmed, sun-and moon-reflecting waters alternate with billowing storm and turbulent spume. Forming an equal part of his repertoire are maritime coasts and land strips, urban views, ship manoeuvres, mythological scenes and gigantic wave pictures catapulting the beholder into the scene. Aivazovsky dashed light, water and air at a helter-skelter work tempo onto large-format canvases. He was often compared to William Mallord Turner because of this: the two artists did actually know each other’s work and held each other in high esteem. Like Turner, Aivazovsky did not work from nature but from memory.

Aivazovsky: Painter of the Sea is the first major Aivazovsky exhibition in a West European venue and shows a cross section of his spectacular oeuvre. Loans for this ambitious exhibition project are being contributed by the Aivazovsky Museum Feodosia, the State Russian Museum in St Petersburg and in Kiev, die Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow and numerous private collections.

Maritime security
www.ntv.co.ke Boundary dispute and negotiation experts are meeting to map out Kenya's maritime boundary. With no definite sea boundary with neighbouring Tanzania and Somalia, Kenya already finds itself in dispute with Somalia, and this could be one of the factors leading to an increase in insecurity in the Indian ocean. Yassin Juma reports.
