Bailout Saves US Manufacturing
Not Just About Cars When President Obama took the bold step of saving the US auto industry, he didn't just save auto assembly jobs. He saved American manufacturing, including 350000 USW jobs that are part of the auto supply chain. All About Jobs The auto rescue helped millions of Americans and Steelworkers from all over: the single mom making axles in Indiana. The lifelong paperworker in Wisconsin making high-glossy paper used in auto catalogs. The kid just out of high school hired into the tire plant in Ohio. The police officer in small town Pennsylvania. The list goes on and on. Change Delivered Mitt Romney says he would have let the auto industry fail -- let us fail. President Obama believed in us. Saving the American auto industry was courageous. It was politically unpopular. But it was the right thing to do.

India's manufacturing hub
India has a reputation as an excellent base for services but a poor centre for manufacturing. But in the city of Pune, about four hours from Mumbai, there is a thriving manufacturing hub thanks to the cluster of car manufacturers that are based there. The FT's James Crabtree asks what India needs to do to replicate this success in other cities. Related article: www.ft.com For more video content from the Financial Times visit: www.ft.com www.FT.com

Oil'd
In April 2010 a massive oil spill began in the Gulf. The entire country was glued to the news until the well was capped, and then we forgot about it.
As the year anniversary was approaching I became curious, just how much oil was that exactly? Where would it have gone? What I found was shocking.
So in an effort to further our discussion on oil dependency I created this short animation to help illustrate just how dependent we truly are on oil.

Markus Kayser - Solar Sinter Project
In a world increasingly concerned with questions of energy production and raw material shortages, this project explores the potential of desert manufacturing, where energy and material occur in abundance.
In this experiment sunlight and sand are used as raw energy and material to produce glass objects using a 3D printing process, that combines natural energy and material with high-tech production technology.
Solar-sintering aims to raise questions about the future of manufacturing and trigger dreams of the full utilisation of the production potential of the world’s most efficient energy resource - the sun. Whilst not providing definitive answers this experiment aims to provide a point of departure for fresh thinking.
This project was developed at the Royal College of Art during my MA studies in Design Products on Platform 13.

Cannonball
Some of them are full of black water. Others have become graveyards for old lawn furniture and rodent carcasses. They are shaped like jelly beans and manufactured by companies named Sunny Side and Champagne. Once upon a time, Fresno was the California Dream. Own a car. Own a house. Own a pool. Everyone wanted it and the wonderful world of credit made it all possible. But now, with the foreclosure monster running wild, the dream is dry. Thousands of pools are festering in the hot Central Valley sun. For most people this is tragic. But for some, it’s an opportunity.

Who are the best apparel manufacturers out there?
Opinion on sourcing apparels from Bangladesh versus China. Subscribe to our newsletter at tinyurl.com to learn more. China is one of the major producers and sources of fabrics and materials used in the manufacture of apparels. We know that their prices are low, and we know that they can produce and deliver in massive bulk quantities. We know that, you know that, China knows that. So let's move on to something that you might not know. Bangladesh is also a heavy hitter in the apparels manufacturing industry and, unlike China, they have higher quality standards and in many cases better prices than their neighbor to the east. Now you may be saying to yourself at this point 'that's all well and good but I don't source my apparels from either country so what's the difference?' The difference is that if you're not sourcing from overseas you're missing out on a number of opportunities to acquire quality apparels at substantially reduced costs. Let's look at some facts; Fact 1- The cost advantage to sourcing overseas means savings of up to 30, 40 and even 50% for your business on T-Shirts, Polo-Shirts, Sweatshirts, Sweaters, Blouses, Skirts, Pullovers, Trousers, Long Pants, Shorts, Jackets, Hats, Caps, Socks, Underwear, Beach Wear, Casual Wear, Work Wear, Medical Wear and Industrial Uniforms for Men, Women & Children of all ages. The less you pay on the raw apparels that you need the less your overhead and the higher your profit margin. Conclusion - Outsourcing overseas makes good ...

euronews hi-tech - 3D printing could 'revolutionise manufacturing'
www.euronews.com 3D printing technology is progressing rapidly, and some experts say it could revolutionise the way objects are made in the future. An object is scanned - or designed on computer modelling software - then sliced up, into many thousands of tiny layers, which are then printed out, eventually forming a solid three dimensional product.
