UNESCO World Heritage Collection 1.
A UNESCO World Heritage Site is a place (such as a forest, mountain, lake, desert, monument, building, complex, or city) that is listed by the UNESCO as of special cultural or physical significance. The list is maintained by the international World Heritage Programme administered by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, composed of 21 states parties which are elected by their General Assembly. The programme catalogues, names, and conserves sites of outstanding cultural or natural importance to the common heritage of humanity. Under certain conditions, listed sites can obtain funds from the World Heritage Fund. The programme was founded with the Convention Concerning the Protection of World Cultural and Natural Heritage, which was adopted by the General Conference of UNESCO on 16 November 1972. Since then, 189 states parties have ratified the convention. As of 2012, 962 sites are listed: 745 cultural, 188 natural, and 29 mixed properties, in 157 states parties.[5][6] By sites ranked by country Italy is home to the greatest number of World Heritage Sites with 47 sites, followed by Spain and China . UNESCO references each World Heritage Site with an identification number; but new inscriptions often include previous sites now listed as part of larger descriptions. As a result, the identification numbers exceed 1200 even though there are fewer on the list. While each World Heritage Site remains part of the legal territory of the state wherein the site is located, UNESCO ...

World Heritage Tourism & Travel Holidays | Magazine & Videos
World Heritage Tourism; a TravelersInsights.com magazine "World Heritage" edition, features Barbados' UNESCO Designation in its first edition. See Barbados Tourism Encyclopedia: barbados.org To put this UNESCO World Heritage Site award in perspective, we need to remember that it was only in 1972 that the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) started designating the most outstanding wilderness, nature, historic and cultural landmarks on earth as World Heritage Sites. The Galapagos Islands, the Roman Forum, Machu Picchu, the Grand Canyon, the Great Barrier Reef, Mount Everest and the Great Wall of China were some of the first entries to the list. More recently, natural landmarks and more recent historic sites have been added. Bridgetown Barbados, added in 2011, a small Caribbean island nation, with a booming tourism industry, has much to gain by this UNESCO heritage recognition. Known internationally for its miles of white sand beaches and more things to do per mile than any other Caribbean holiday island, it now can rightfully claim its place as a "World Heritage Tourism and culturally" significant travel destination. UNESCO's goal is to build lasting peace. Adding a Tourism designation to Selected UNESCO Heritage Sites accelerates and expands this mandate by sharing our heritage, our place and our culture. It enables us all to participate and bring understanding to the world. youtu.be For more go to wwww.barbados.org/worldheritage The ...

UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley
Discover the UNESCO World Heritage Site Upper Middle Rhine Valley in 7:33 minutes! The Upper Middle Rhine Valley stretches from Rüdesheim and Bingen in the south to Koblenz in the north. A mere 67 kilometres in length, the UNESCO site covers only about five per cent of the Rhine's entire couse, but it is widely recognized as the most beauriful strech on the whole river between the Alps and the North Sea. The natural and the cultural landscape, the fortresses and castles: everything here still exudes the true essence of the 'Romantic Rhine'. There are museums, churches and events to enjoy, as well as the hospitality of our hotels, guest houses, holiday flats, restaurants and wine taverns. Hiking, cycling tours and boat trips on the Rhine are only some of the highlights for those who prefer an active holiday. Look at www.welterbe-atlas.de for further information in english.

101 East - The heritage curse
In the 38 years since UNESCO launched its World Heritage programme to help preserve cultural and natural treasures, over 900 sites have earned the distinction. But some conservation experts say that the uncontrolled tourism development that follows World Heritage designation may do more harm than good for the very sites the programme was meant to protect.

World Heritage - Patrimonito - 9th Cuzco, Peru
Patrimonito means 'small heritage' in Spanish and the character represents a young heritage guardian. Patrimonito has been widely adopted as the international mascot of the World Heritage Education Programme. Patrimonito was created in 1995 by a group of Spanish-speaking students during a workshop at the 1st World Heritage Youth Forum held in Bergen, Norway. The young students designed Patrimonito on the basis of the World Heritage Emblem which symbolizes the interdependence of cultural and natural sites: the central square is a form created by people and the circle represents nature, the two being intimately linked; the emblem is round like the world and at the same time a symbol of protection. Patrimonito Storyboard Competition In 2002 a cartoon series entitled Patrimonito's World Heritage Adventures was launched where Patrimonito introduces World Heritage sites, the threats they are facing and proposes solutions to preserve them. whc.unesco.org

Rome - Italy - UNESCO World Heritage Site
Rome is the capital of Italy and the country's largest and most populated city and comune, with over 2.7 million residents in 1285.3 km2 (496.3 sq mi). The city is located in the central-western portion of the Italian Peninsula, on the Tiber River within the Lazio region of Italy. Rome's history spans two and a half thousand years. It was the capital city of the Roman Kingdom, the Roman Republic and the Roman Empire, which was the dominant power in Western Europe and the lands bordering the Mediterranean for over seven hundred years from the 1st century BC until the 7th century AD. Since the 1st century AD Rome has been the seat of the Papacy and, after the end of Byzantine domination, in the 8th century it became the capital of the Papal States, which lasted until 1870. In 1871 Rome became the capital of the Kingdom of Italy, and in 1946 that of the Italian Republic. After the Middle Ages, Rome was ruled by popes such as Alexander VI and Leo X, who transformed the city into one of the major centers of the Italian Renaissance, along with Florence.[2] The current version of St Peter's Basilica was built and the Sistine Chapel was painted by Michelangelo. Famous artists and architects, such as Bramante, Bernini and Raphael resided for some time in Rome, contributing to its Renaissance and Baroque architecture. In 2007 Rome was the 11th-most-visited city in the world, 3rd most visited in the European Union, and the most popular tourist attraction in Italy. The city is one of ...
