The Silk Road 03 The Art Gallery in the Desert
The Art Gallery in the Desert. Focuses on the famous Mogao caves at Dunhuang, which are indeed an art gallery of Buddhist art spanning centuries. Excellent closeups and sufficient analysis in a clear fashion to give some appreciation for the imagery and the changes in artistic style, reflecting the cultural exchange that took place on the Silk Road. It would have been valuable to have had more information on the treasure trove of manuscripts that the famous explorer Aurel Stein acquired at Dunhuang early in this century and took off to the British Library, although in several places the series shows photographs of what he discovered and items from other museum collections.

Bezeklik Ancient UFOs ? Thousand Buddha Caves
unisonicascension.com Bezeklik Thousand Buddha Caves are complex of Buddhist cave grottos, dating from the 5th to the 9th centuries, between the cities of Turpan and Shanshan . The caves at Bezeklik, situated in the Flaming Mountains, along the Silk Road; contained at one time, some of the best preserved Buddhist images and statuary in China. Many of the cave images, have what appear to be; depictions of ancient UFOs. Some of the pigments used in the frescos at Bezeklik were azurite & malachite. Then, in 1914, Sir Aurel Stein showed up and took most of it away . However; Bezeklil is still beautiful. Bezeklik means "Place Where There Are Paintings'........ This video contains images of the Bezeklik frescos from museum's, along with rear images taken inside the Bezeklik cave grottos themselves. Ancient Uyghur Civilization (1)-Cave art by ancient Uyghurs
At the end of the 19th and the first few decades of the 20th century, scientific and archaeological expeditions to the region along the Silk Road in East Turkestan led to the discovery of numerous Uyghur cave temples, monastery ruins, wall paintings, statues, frescoes, valuable manuscripts, documents and books. Members of the expedition from Great Britain, Sweden, Russia, Germany, France, Japan, and the United States were amazed by the treasure they found there, and soon detailed reports captured the attention on an interested public around the world. The relics of these rich Uyghur cultural remnants brought back by Sven Hedin of Sweden, Aurel Stein of Great Britain, Gruen Wedel and Albert von Lecoq from Germany, Paul Pelliot of France, Langdon Warner of the United States, and Count Ottani from Japan can be seen in the Museums of Berlin, London, Paris, Tokyo, Leningrad and even in the Museum of Central Asian Antiquities in New Delhi. The manuscripts, documents and the books discovered in Eastern Turkestan proved that the Uyghurs had a very high degree of civilization. Tarim basin buddhist wall paintings The murals in the Kizil Thousand-Buddhist Caves are reputed as "The most beautiful murals in Central Asia". They are found in 81 caves with a total area of more than 10000 square meters (11960 yards). The diamond grid pattern is the most impressive feature in the caves. There is a story about Buddha's reincarnation in every gird. Each story was portrayed by a single picture ...

The Silk Road 07 Khotan-Oasis of Silk and Jade
Khotan: Oasis of Silk and Jade. A camel caravan brings big chunks of jade down from the Kun-Lun Mountains south of the Taklamakan Desert. Comments on religious significance of jade in China; picture of spectacular suit of jade armor from a tomb. People searching for jade in a river; then the jade market in town. The silk industry--weaving and spinning. The famous tale of the "Silk Princess" who smuggled silkworms out of China and is depicted in one of paintings discovered by the archaeologist Aurel Stein. Expedition searches for that site in the desert (Dandan Oilik) but fails to locate it. Scenes of typical Uighur market day in Khotan, but Japanese film crew play the foolish tourists. A silk dance, with the female dancers carrying plates of cocoons. Visit to the local ice house in the heat of mid-summer. Some rather silly dialogue (When did you get the ice? In January? Oh, you mean in winter!) and a remarkable assertion that Uighurs have little furniture in their houses today because once (hundreds of years ago!) they were nomads. Other somewhat demeaning comments on Uighurs. Mosque scene with some 5000 worshippers on Friday--China as a bastion of freedom of religion today. A little about history of Khotan as a Buddhist center before the arrival of Islam in tenth century. Visits there by Xuanzang, the 7th century pilgrim, and by Marco Polo in the thirteenth century.

Mazar Tagh
Over a century ago the Hungarian scholar Marc Aurel Stein set out on what was to be his first of four expeditions to Chinese Central Asia. He was in search of ancient civilisations, almost forgotten to history yet with ruins which could potentially provide archaeological evidence of the rich cultural mix engendered by the opening of the international trade routes across Eurasia the Silk Road. Steins expeditions and finds exceeded his expectations: he uncovered hundreds of archaeological sites, discovering over 50000 artefacts. He also mapped his journey and the sites and took over 5000 photographs, recording the sites, people he encountered, everyday life, officials and the changing landscape. In November 2008 members of a joint project between IDP and the Xinjiang Institute of Archaeology in China (XJIA), retraced Stein's footsteps to retake his site photographs a hundred years on. Read more about the IDP Field Trip idp.bl.uk Mazar Tagh The Tibetan army built this fort when they occupied the area in the mid-8th century AD. On top of a hill overlooking the Khotan River in otherwise flat land it is in a excellent strategic position, controlling the route from Khotan to the south to the kingdoms of the northern Tarim. Many Tibetan woodslips and other items which survived from Tibetan times were discovered among the piles of rubbish from the stable block which still cover the slope below the fort. There is a small shrine next to the fort, hence the name Mazar-tagh or 'Hill ...

Tajiks Wedding (one of the 56 nationalities in China) 1/2
Pamiris in China, also called Tajiks in China (Chinese: 塔吉克族, Pinyin: Tǎjíkèzú), are one of the 56 nationalities officially recognized by the People's Republic of China.[citation needed] This group, with a population of 41028 (in 2000), is located mainly in China's western Xinjiang region with 60% living in Tashkurgan Tajik Autonomous County. They are a collection of over a dozen small East Iranian ethnic groups. The Ethnologue claims that they are actually Shugni and Wakhi, distinct from the West Iranian Persian-speaking Tajiks of Tajikistan. Aurel Stein and other writers from his time referred to them simply as Sarikoli. Some have referred to them simply as "Mountain Tajiks."[6] Robert Shaw considered them Sarikolis and Wakhis, referring to them collectively as Ghalchah.

Ancient Uyghur Civilization (2)-Cave art by ancient Uyghurs
Treasures Of The Silk Road 2006, 205 minutes, Rated G Along the border between central Asia and India, behind the high Pamir and Tien Shan mountain chains, the Silk Road arrives at an immense basin forming a natural tone around one of the world's largest deserts, the Taklamakan. Its exceptional size and the extremes of its climate had for many years spared it from intrusion. Merchant caravans made their way from oasis to oasis on the edge of the desert rather than risk becoming lost in an ocean of sand and dunes, a white zone on the map of the world. A crossroads of peoples, cultures and beliefs, discover the hidden civilisations of the Taklamakan - induding the lost kingdom of Loulan and its mummies, the monastery-settlements on the Silk Road, long forgotten Buddhist frescoes and the mysterious citadel of Khara Khoto. Kashmir कॅशीर.
...princely state became a disputed territory, now administered by three countries: India, Pakistan, and the People's Republic of China. The Nilamata Purana describes the Valleys origin from the waters; का Ka (water) + शिमिरि Shimir (to desiccate), hence, Kaashmir denotes a land desiccated from water. An alternate nominal origin theory proposes that Kaashmir is a contraction of either Kashyap-mira or Kashyapmir or Kashyapmeru, denoting the sea of Kashyapa and the mountain of Kashyapa, eponyms of Kashyapa, the sage credited with having drained the primordial Satisar lake that occupied the Kaashmir valley before he reclaimed it from the water. Considering the Valley an embodiment of the goddess Uma, the Nilamata Purana gives it the place-name Kaashmira, from which derives the contemporary Kashmir place-name. Nonetheless, the Kaashmiris colloquially use the place-name Kashir, which is phonetically derived from Kaashmir, as noted in the Aurel Stein introduction to the Rajatarangini metrical chronicle. In the Rajatarangini, a history of Kashmir written by Kalhana in the 12th century, it is stated that the valley of Kaashmir was formerly a lake. This was drained by the great rishi or sage, Kashyapa, son of Marichi, son of Brahma, by cutting the gap in the hills at Baramulla (Varaha-mula). Cashmere is a variant spelling of Kaashmir.
