Royal car breaks down during Papua New Guinea visit
The Prince of Wales and Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall were forced to change vehicles when their car broke down during the final stage of their official visit to Papua New Guinea. The royal couple waved goodbye to the crowds after a wreath laying ceremony at Remembrance Park in Port Moresby, the Pacific nation's capital city. But their car failed to start and after waiting for several minutes in a black Mercedes, Prince Charles and his wife had to transfer to a silver Range Rover. Royal aides hastily moved luggage between the vehicles before they were able to depart. Earlier, the couple carried out separate engagements in the city. Prince Charles visited the Hohola Youth Development Centre, where he was presented with a garland of flowers and watched a display of traditional dancing. The centre's students performed a welcome song and showed the royal visitor examples of their work from cookery, sewing and carpentry classes. Charles and Camilla sample Papua culture
The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall tour a village in Papua New Guinea as they continue their Diamond Jubilee Tour. The November 3-16 trip is the latest to the Commonwealth by senior royals to mark Queen Elizabeth II's diamond jubilee, a landmark that saw millions of patriotic Britons attend various events during four days of festivities in June. Looking to build on a surge in enthusiasm for the royal family, Prince Charles will make a nostalgic return to impoverished Papua New Guinea. He first visited in 1966 while studying at Geelong Grammar School in Australia. Safe Cities: Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea 2012
Port Moresby is one of five pilot cities -- along with Quito, Kigali, New Delhi and Cairo -- participating in UN Women's Global Programme "Safe Cities Free of Violence against Women and Girls." Operating successfully since its December 2010 launch, the project, entitled "Port Moresby: A Safer City for Women and Girls," aims to develop, test, evaluate and disseminate a model that makes cities safer for women and girls. Port Moresby -- Papua New Guinea's capital -- is characterized by poor and crowded living conditions, a growing population with high urban migration, increasing cultural diversity and ethnic tensions, and a widening gap between rich and poor. It has been ranked as one of the five least-liveable cities in the world based on scores in five areas: stability, health care, culture and environment, education and infrastructure. Large natural resource extraction projects in mining, petroleum and liquefied natural gas have generated solid increases in GDP over the last decade, but economic growth has not translated into the development of the country or its people. The city's violent crime threatens the safety and security of all citizens, particularly women and girls, who live in fear of physical and verbal sexual harassment and assault and are too often victims of these and other forms of gender-based violence. The city's marketplaces are among the most unsafe public spaces where gambling, drinking, drug sales and consumption, rape, gang rape, sexual harassment ...

Papua New Guinea
Papua New Guinea; Papua New Guinea, officially the Independent State of Papua New Guinea, is a country in Oceania, occupying the eastern half of the island of New Guinea and numerous offshore islands (the western portion of the island is a part of the Indonesian provinces of Papua and West Papua). It is located in the southwestern Pacific Ocean, in a region defined since the early 19th century as Melanesia. The capital is Port Moresby. Papua New Guinea is one of the most culturally diverse countries on Earth. According to recent data, 841 different languages are listed for the country, although 11 of these have no known living speakers. There may be at least as many traditional societies, out of a population of about 6.2 million. It is also one of the most rural, as only 18% of its people live in urban centres. The country is one of the world's least explored, culturally and geographically, and many undiscovered species of plants and animals are thought to exist in the interior of Papua New Guinea. Strong growth in the mining and resource sector has led to PNG becoming the 7th fastest-growing economy in the world as at 2011. Despite this, the majority of the population still live in traditional societies and practise subsistence-based agriculture. These societies and clans have some explicit acknowledgement within the nation's constitutional framework. The PNG Constitution expresses the wish for "traditional villages and communities to remain as viable units of Papua New ...

Images Of Papua New Guinea - Scene 1
As promised this is the first installment of my journey to the remote islands and villages of Papua New Guinea on the vessel the True North.
I was asked by owners Craig Howson and Mark Stothard to record the journey through the lens of my trusty 5D mk2 in a way that highlights the beauty of this spectacular country.
I was slightly nervous about PNG as you hear stories about it being an unsafe travel destination but this could not be further from the truth. It was so the opposite that I hope my short productions can dispel any doubts people have about this wonderful country.
Northstar Cruises have been building and fine tuning their Adventures in Paradise PNG tour for 5 years now and it's a credit to the crew of True North for it's well planned, interactive, and safe tour through one of the most remote places in the world.
Papua New Guinea is one of the most beautiful, clean and friendly places I have ever visited and am hoping to return one day to see more of this spectacular land.
It's a photographers paradise and as with the remote Kimberley of Western Australia one of the best travel experiences available.
For all of you who care this production was shot by me using the following equipment. Boy was I tired after I got back.
Two Canon 5D mk2's, Canon lenses 16/35mm, 24mm, 85mm, 18mm tiltshift, 400mm. Fostex FR2LE Field Recorder, Rode Mic's, Azden Wireless Mic's, Aqua Tech Water Housing, Various filters, Lee, Polarizers etc. Macbook Pro, MacPro, Final Cut Studio 7.

Children Of Papua New Guinea
I was fortunate enough to be invited back on True North to experience their "Adventures in Paradise" tour which started in Kavieng In Papua New Guinea and finished at Alatou.
It is an amazing journey which allowed us to interact with many villages that still had no resemblance of twenty first century life. It was like stepping back in time to another world. I was given the opportunity to film many of the children in these villages and I have put together a short collage of some of these.
It was an incredibly moving experience. The excitement on their faces at our arrival and the warmth shown to us was something I will remember for a long time.
The "True North" is the only adventure vessel which visits these areas and makes a logistical nightmare seem effortless. It was a trip of a lifetime and I hope to revisit this amazing country one day.

Dancing with the Huli Wigmen
This was a surprisingly not-so-difficult clip to get. I arrived in Tari, Papua New Guinea with no plans or arrangements and no idea what I was doing.
I met Patrick on the runway and told him I hoped to find the Huli Wigmen. He said "no problem" and we hopped in a truck.
I visited some Huli villages and wandered around the area all morning. Patrick took me to the Wigmen's village and introduced me. It took them an hour or so to get dressed up, and then we had to sit around waiting for the rain to stop.
It stopped, then this happened, then I paid them for their time, and that was that.

SPLINTERS Teaser
In the 1980s an intrepid Australian pilot left behind a surfboard in the seaside village of Vanimo, Papua New Guinea.
Twenty years on, surfing is not only a pillar of village life but also a means to prestige. With no access to economic or educational advancement, let alone running water and power, village life is hermetic.
A spot on the Papua New Guinea national surfing team is the way to see the wider world; the only way.

Police in Papua New Guinea caught assaulting Mrs. Dame Carol Kidu
** Original Text ** The last time we checked in with Carol Kidu, Papua New Guinea's lone female legislator, she was proposing a bil that would set aside a percentage of parliamentary seats for women. Since then, she has become the head of the nation's forlorn opposition, a role which has brought her into frequent conflict with PNG's thoroughly corrupt elite. Three days ago, as the above video attests, Kidu's activism brought her to the streets of a Port Moresby slum, where security services were bulldozing homes to make way for a shiny new development. Kidu asked only that the residents be permitted to gather their possessions before being evicted. But the men who do the government's bidding wouldn't hear of it. Watch the whole video if you can. The situation spirals out of control at the 1:45 mark, which is right around when the bullets start flying. This is life in a country where the rule of law is mostly an illusion.

Tribal Fighting - Papua New Guinea
July 2007 Steve Marshall reports on the changing face of tribal warfare in the Highlands of Papua New Guinea. Highland tribes have traditionally used violence to solve disputes - over everything from land control to wives and livestock. Now, the disputes continue, but the weaponry has changed. These days many illegal guns have made their way into the hands of tribal fighters. From bows and arrows to illegal semi-automatic weapons -- the fallout is devastating. "When he was killed I was left with three kids to look after and it's hard for me", a widow in the Western Highlands tells Marshall. Tribal fighters confirmed that the drugs for guns trade between PNG and the top end of Australia is also alive and well. "Some of our businessman who are out there in Australia they buy the guns and send it up to us here", said tribal fighter Moses Kauga. At a time when PNG voters are going to the polls for the 2007 national elections, Steve Marshall also reveals claims that PNG politicians themselves might be involved in the trade.
