Honorius of Canterbury
Honorius (died 30 September 653) was a member of the Gregorian mission to Christianize the Anglo-Saxons from their native Anglo-Saxon paganism in 597 AD who later became Archbishop of Canterbury. During his archiepiscopate, he consecrated the first native English bishop of Rochester as well as helping the missionary efforts of Felix among the East Anglians. Honorius was the last to die among the Gregorian missionaries.
Early life
A Roman by birth, Honorius may have been one of those chosen by Pope Gregory the Great for the Gregorian mission to England, although it seems more likely that he was a member of the second party of missionaries, sent in 601. It is not known if his name was given to him at birth or if he chose it when he became archbishop.
Archbishop
In 627, Honorius was consecrated as archbishop by Paulinus of York at Lincoln. Honorius wrote to Pope Honorius I asking the pope to raise the see of York to an archbishopric, so that when one archbishop in England died, the other would be able to consecrate the deceased bishop's successor. The pope agreed, and sent a pallium for Paulinus, but by this time, Paulinus had already been forced to flee from Northumbria. When Paulinus, after the death of King Edwin of Northumbria in October 633, fled Northumbria, he was received by Honorius and appointed to the bishopric of Rochester. The papal letter is dated to June 634, and implies that news of Edwin's death had not reached the pope. This evidence may mean that the traditional date of Edwin's death may need to be moved to October 634. The papal letter may also mean that the traditional date of consecration for Honorius may need re-dating, as the long gap between 627, when he is said to have been consecrated, and 634, when he finally received a pallium, is much longer than usually found. It may be that Honorius was consecrated closer to 634. The papal letter to Honorius is given in the Ecclesiastical History of the medieval writer Bede.

Canterbury (
i/ˈkæntərbri/, /-bəri/, or /-bɛri/) is a historic English cathedral city and UNESCO World Heritage Site, which lies at the heart of the City of Canterbury, a local government district of Kent in the United Kingdom. It lies on the River Stour.
The Archbishop of Canterbury is the primate of the Church of England and the worldwide Anglican Communion owing to the importance of St Augustine, who served as the apostle to the pagan Kingdom of Kent around the turn of the 7th century. The city's cathedral became a major focus of pilgrimage following the 1170 martyrdom of Thomas Becket. A journey of pilgrims to his shrine served as the frame for Geoffrey Chaucer's 14th-century classic The Canterbury Tales.
Canterbury is a popular tourist destination: consistently one of the most-visited cities in the United Kingdom, the city's economy is heavily reliant upon tourism. The city has been occupied since Paleolithic times and served as the capital of the Celtic Cantiaci and Jute Kingdom of Kent. Many historical structures fill the area, including a city wall founded in Roman times and rebuilt in the 14th century, the ruins of St Augustine's Abbey and a Norman castle, and the oldest extant school in the world, The King's School. Modern additions include the Marlowe Theatre and the St Lawrence Ground, home of the Kent County Cricket Club. There is also a substantial student population, brought about by the presence of the University of Kent, Canterbury Christ Church University, the University for the Creative Arts, and the Girne American University Canterbury campus. Canterbury remains, however, a relatively small city in terms of geographical size, when compared with other British cities.

Canterbury (UK Parliament constituency)
Canterbury is a constituency represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament since 1987 by Julian Brazier of the Conservative Party.
History
The wider constituency was formed from an expansion of the narrow parliamentary borough (or simply borough) of the same name that existed from 1295 to 1918. This had elected two MPs from 1295 (the Model Parliament) until 1885, and then one until 1918. Since 1918 it has consistently elected candidates of the Conservative Party.
Boundaries
1918-1950: The County Borough of Canterbury, the Urban Districts of Herne Bay and Whitstable, the Rural Districts of Bridge and Elham, and the Rural District of Blean with the detached parts of the civil parishes of Dunkirk and Hernhill which were wholly surrounded by the rural district.
1950-1983: The County Borough of Canterbury, the Urban Districts of Herne Bay and Whitstable, and the Rural District of Bridge Blean.
1983-1997: The City of Canterbury wards of Barham Downs, Barton, Blean Forest, Chartham, Chestfield, Gorrell, Harbledown, Harbour, Little Stour, Marshside, Northgate, North Nailbourne, St Stephen's, Seasalter, Stone Street, Sturry North, Sturry South, Swalecliffe, Tankerton, Westgate, and Wincheap, and the Borough of Swale wards of Boughton and Courtenay.

In his resignation statement, Welby said the report "exposed the long-maintained conspiracy of silence about the heinous abuses of John Smyth". To reach the island, one of the earliest sites of Christian pilgrimage in Britain, Simon follows a line of posts marking out a crossing that emerges from the North Sea at low tide.

The UK General Election in 2024 uses the new electoral boundaries. Only 65 of the 650 seats are staying the same. Some seats are new, while some are abolished. In these videos we look at why boundaries are changing, a summary of the new constituency including demographics and geography, how the population of the new constituency is formed from the old seats. Then we get into the politics. We present the results for each of the constituencies in 2019, then look at the trends for the main seat that is being replaced. For the main seat, we look who won, who came second, and the majority. We look at the graph of the vote share for the last 4 elections. The historic English town in the heart of Kent has always been a Tory stronghold - but Sunday's vote saw incumbent Sir Julian Brazier lose to Rosie Duffield by just 187 votes.
Increased student participation in the election is being seen as a key factor in the shock result
"I was very excited actually. Very surprised", said Nicholas Hubble, a 19-year-old Labour voter who traveled down from Exeter where he studied to vote back home.
With tens of thousands of European nationals visiting, studying or living in the city, 23-year-old George Dabaasio also believes Brexit played a big role.
During the 2016 EU referendum, Canterbury voted to leave the EU by 51 percent but many young people didn't turn up to vote.
With students and staff from about 150 different countries, Edwards Morgan-Jones a Senior Lecturer at Kent University believes people were "very worried about the effect of the government's approach of Brexit on the university".
But to some extent, it also comes down to the numbers.
"We had 10 percent more voters than in 2015 and those voters were mainly younger voters", he said.
The reason for this surge can partly be attributed to university unions who went out and actively encourages students to register to vote.
For first year political science student, Toby French, what inspired him was the way the Labour party reached out to youth using popular platforms.
But for Tory voters, the defeat was a devastating blow. 67-year-old Sheryl Barker says she's angry at the students and the universities who she believes influenced them.

Labour’s plan to launch a tax raid on private schools is “crazy” and will drive more children into the state sector, Penny Mordaunt warned on Thursday.
During the seven-party debate hosted by ITV newsreader Julie Etchingham, the Leader of the Commons said Sir Keir Starmer’s proposal “doesn’t serve anyone” and is “the kind of dogma we need to keep out of the public sector”.
Addressing Angela Rayner during the event, she said: “What Angela and the Labour Party are going to do is, unbelievably, they are going to tax education”.

In his resignation statement, Welby said the report "exposed the long-maintained conspiracy of silence about the heinous abuses of John Smyth".

Honorius of Canterbury
Honorius (died 30 September 653) was a member of the Gregorian mission to Christianize the Anglo-Saxons from their native Anglo-Saxon paganism in 597 AD who later became Archbishop of Canterbury. During his archiepiscopate, he consecrated the first native English bishop of Rochester as well as helping the missionary efforts of Felix among the East Anglians. Honorius was the last to die among the Gregorian missionaries.
Early life
A Roman by birth, Honorius may have been one of those chosen by Pope Gregory the Great for the Gregorian mission to England, although it seems more likely that he was a member of the second party of missionaries, sent in 601. It is not known if his name was given to him at birth or if he chose it when he became archbishop.
Archbishop
In 627, Honorius was consecrated as archbishop by Paulinus of York at Lincoln. Honorius wrote to Pope Honorius I asking the pope to raise the see of York to an archbishopric, so that when one archbishop in England died, the other would be able to consecrate the deceased bishop's successor. The pope agreed, and sent a pallium for Paulinus, but by this time, Paulinus had already been forced to flee from Northumbria. When Paulinus, after the death of King Edwin of Northumbria in October 633, fled Northumbria, he was received by Honorius and appointed to the bishopric of Rochester. The papal letter is dated to June 634, and implies that news of Edwin's death had not reached the pope. This evidence may mean that the traditional date of Edwin's death may need to be moved to October 634. The papal letter may also mean that the traditional date of consecration for Honorius may need re-dating, as the long gap between 627, when he is said to have been consecrated, and 634, when he finally received a pallium, is much longer than usually found. It may be that Honorius was consecrated closer to 634. The papal letter to Honorius is given in the Ecclesiastical History of the medieval writer Bede.

(9 Jun 2017) In a stunning blow to the conservatives, Canterbury has elected a Labour MP for the first time since the constituency was formed nearly a century ago.
The historic English town in the heart of Kent has always been a Tory stronghold - but Sunday's vote saw incumbent Sir Julian Brazier lose to Rosie Duffield by just 187 votes.
Increased student participation in the election is being seen as a key factor in the shock result
"I was very excited actually. Very surprised", said Nicholas Hubble, a 19-year-old Labour voter who traveled down from Exeter where he studied to vote back home.
With tens of thousands of European nationals visiting, studying or living in the city, 23-year-old George Dabaasio also believes Brexit played a big role.
During the 2016 EU referendum, Canterbury voted to leave the EU by 51 percent but many young people didn't turn up to vote.
With students and staff from about 150 different countries, Edwards Morgan-Jones a Senior Lecturer at Kent University believes people were "very worried about the effect of the government's approach of Brexit on the university".
But to some extent, it also comes down to the numbers.
"We had 10 percent more voters than in 2015 and those voters were mainly younger voters", he said.
The reason for this surge can partly be attributed to university unions who went out and actively encourages students to register to vote.
For first year political science student, Toby French, what inspired him was the way the Labour party reached out to youth using popular platforms.
But for Tory voters, the defeat was a devastating blow. 67-year-old Sheryl Barker says she's angry at the students and the universities who she believes influenced them.

Ministerial statements are a way for Ministers to bring an important matter to the attention of the House, often at short notice. Government Ministers may make oral statements to Parliament which usually address major incidents, government policies or actions. These take place after Oral Questions and any granted Urgent Questions. After making a statement the Minister responds to questions on its topic from MPs. An hour is allocated for this. Commons statements will sometimes be repeated in the Lords at an appropriate time to fit in with the main business.

The UK General Election in 2024 uses the new electoral boundaries. Only 65 of the 650 seats are staying the same. Some seats are new, while some are abolished. In these videos we look at why boundaries are changing, a summary of the new constituency including demographics and geography, how the population of the new constituency is formed from the old seats. Then we get into the politics. We present the results for each of the constituencies in 2019, then look at the trends for the main seat that is being replaced. For the main seat, we look who won, who came second, and the majority. We look at the graph of the vote share for the last 4 elections. Then we list the final list of candidates and make a prediction for the 2024 winner based on predictions using an optimistic scenario and a bad day for the Conservatives.

Labour’s plan to launch a tax raid on private schools is “crazy” and will drive more children into the state sector, Penny Mordaunt warned on Thursday.
During the seven-party debate hosted by ITV newsreader Julie Etchingham, the Leader of the Commons said Sir Keir Starmer’s proposal “doesn’t serve anyone” and is “the kind of dogma we need to keep out of the public sector”.
Addressing Angela Rayner during the event, she said: “What Angela and the Labour Party are going to do is, unbelievably, they are going to tax education”.
