A lichen is a composite organism that arises from algae or cyanobacteria (or both) living among filaments of a fungus in a symbiotic relationship. The combined life form has properties that are very different from the properties of its component organisms. Lichens come in many colors, sizes, and forms. The properties are sometimes plant-like, but lichens are not plants. Lichens may have tiny, leafless branches (fruticose), flat leaf-like structures (foliose), flakes that lie on the surface like peeling paint (crustose), or other growth forms. A macrolichen is a lichen that is either bush-like or leafy; all other lichens are termed microlichens. Here, "macro" and "micro" do not refer to size, but to the growth form.Common names for lichens may contain the word "moss" (e.g., "Reindeer moss", "Iceland moss"), and lichens may superficially look like and grow with mosses, but lichens are not related to mosses or any plant. Lichens do not have roots that absorb water and nutrients as plants do but like plants they produce their own food by photosynthesis using sunlight energy, from carbon dioxide, water and minerals in their environment. When they grow on plants, they do not live as parasites and only use the plants as a substrate.

Lichens Kirlian Auras The Psychic Nature Of Being [2005]
Lichen are one of the most undervalued organisms on the face of the planet. Watch this video to find out why. Some people have commented that I say the lichen is eating the rock and that this is not the case. I do think I'm using the word "eating" a little more loosely here, to simply mean "derive nutrients from," which Lichen certainly does. Like most fungi, they use external digestion, secreting enzymes and acid into their substrate and deriving (some) nutrients from it. If I made this video again, I would flip the "supplement" part around and say that it makes most of its food using the algae and supplements its diet with nutrients from the rock. Part of the Restoring the Americas Collection, this video has a corresponding blog post. http://www.newforestearth.org/v0.2/terrible-nat...

This video describes about general characteristics of lichens, which are composite organisms consisting of symbiotic associations of algae (phycobiont) and fungi (mycobiont).

Lichens are composite organisms comprising of an alga and fungus or a cyanbacterium and fungus in a symbiotic relationship in most cases. The lichen's alga and cyanobacterium perform photosynthesis with the fungus component deriving some of these photosynthetic products for it's growth. The fungus provides mineral nutrients extracted from the air, water and substrate to which is is attached along with water storage and housing. The fungal component also plays a role in the lichen adhering to it's substrate. Lichens can live in the harshest of environments for example, withstanding high UV radiation levels at South Pole to mountain tops. Salt spray is also not a problem for some species that live on rocks close to the sea. Lichens are long lived and their celluar ultrastructure has b...

Contre ta peau, contre ta peau m'étendre
Contre ta peau, contre ta peau m'étendre
Et sentir l'humanité
Je veux tenter, tenter ma chance
Croire que l'on peut encore s'échapper
Contre ta peau, contre ta peau m'étendre
