KECI-TV visits Project Vote Smart Headquarters
"A nonprofit political research group is busy this election season helping sort through campaigns to bring voters the facts. It's called Project Vote Smart (PVS), a national nonpartisan group that works year-round gathering information about candidates and political issues. Tim Holme is a retired government teacher and military officer. "American government in addition to other things for 15 years," said Holme. While those careers are over, his love for political science is not. That's what brought him to the Great Divide Ranch, home of PVS. "This is a contribution. I feel it's worthwhile," said Holme."

ANTI-FLAG HISTORY
JUSTIN SANE GIVES SOME BACKGROUND ON ANTI-FLAG
For the real story on Anti-Flag you have to go way back to 1988. At that time, Pat could hardly play drums and I was even worse at guitar. But the fact remained that we were the only punk rockers in Glenshaw, Pennsylvania (the town where we grew up) and when faced with either hanging out at the mall, getting fucked out of our minds on drugs, or attempting to play punk rock, we went straight for the punk rock! By 1989 we were playing just well enough to have a band, which we named Anti-Flag. However that band didn't look anything like the Anti-Flag of today. At that time my sister, Lucy Fester, held down the lead vocals, and a number of stray guitarists and bass players sifted in and out of the mix. After playing only one show at a church hall we rented the band fell apart and as far as we were concerned was laid to rest forever! Jump ahead to 1993. After playing in a number of forgettable bands Pat and I drove across the country to fuck around on the west coast for a while. Pat went back to Pittsburgh a week or two after our arrival in San Francisco and I hung out there for about eight months to check out the scenery. Once back in Pittsburgh we were more determined than ever to start a serious band. All we needed was a good bass player. That's where Andy Flag entered the picture. I had met him a year or two earlier at church. Both of us had been forced to attend church by our moms and Andy was the only other punky kid in the youth group, so naturally, we automatically attracted to each other. As it turned out Andy played bass and he, Pat, and I, got together and played a number of times. But then Pat and I left for the west coast, which gave us no chance to really get anything going. So when I got back from San Francisco we called him up and asked him to join the new band we were forming. He accepted.
We practiced our asses off during the remainder of February and part of March and within a few weeks we were scheduled to play a live radio show on WRCT in Pittsburgh. Unfortunately for us, we still didn't have a name! While Pat and I had already used the name Anti-Flag years earlier in our other band we had been kicking around the idea of using it again. Why? Well, it was like this... the name was originally inspired as a result of the late 80's Pittsburgh scene being infiltrated by a bunch of ass holes who toted the slogan, "Freedom not fascism". Well, that would've been great if these jerks practiced what they preached, but unfortunately, their idea of punk rock was VERY fascist! They took to sporting the American flag on their jackets, saying the pledge of allegiance to the flag, and (like the bunch of goons they were) beating the fuck out of each other and anyone who got in the way. (basically they were just macho jock types who happened to have gotten into punk) At shows I would see these fuckers sporting their flags singing along to the Sub Humans, Exploited, Circle Jerks, whoever happened to be on tour, and I would wonder why? Weren't these bands completely speaking out against everything these "punx" believed in? It seemed to me that these kids were really missing the point to it all. They needed to look "fascism" up in the dictionary so they could learn that fascism controls the masses by 1. Promoting extreme nationalism, and 2. Using systematic violence and terror. (To these kids credit they were against racism but they failed to realize that you can be anti racist and still be a fascist!)
With that in mind, even though we had already used the name Anti-Flag we felt like it was a name that could still say a lot about the current state of the punk rock community and the world as a whole. Our thinking was that people wouldn't so easily be able to treat our band as entertainment, but instead it would be a vehicle that would force them to think. THEY DIDN'T HAVE TO AGREE WITH US! We just wanted to make a point that we weren't there ONLY to entertain, we had something to say, there was a fundamental belief behind the band. So, the night of our show at WRCT we walked through the doors as Anti-Flag. (Fuckin' right!) Why did we put the hyphen in the middle of "anti" and "flag"? I'd like to be able to tell you that it's a symbol of defiance, we were snubbing the use of proper English to show our hatred for modern society, etc., etc... Unfortunately, the truth is, we were all just too dumb to know the correct use of a hyphen.
Moving right along...
Where Did Anti-Flag Go From There?
For about three years after forming Anti-Flag played local gigs and did our best to play as many out of town shows as possible which was hard because we didn't hav

Big Picture Seminar
If the first incarnation of the internet saw the democratisation of information and made us all publishers, the second incarnation of the internet, Web2.0, is the democratisation of innovation and decision-making, and will make us all co-designers of civil society in the 21st century.
This brings with it a great deal of responsibility, perhaps more than most people realise. The role of our Government during this phase of evolution for our system of democracy becomes incredibly important as it will set the tone for how and why citizens could and would engage.
Any period of significant change presents opportunities as well as risks. For Government, a high bar is set by citizens as to their expectations. In this way, these opportunities and risks are amplified through the prism of politics.
Today, I will discuss some of the opportunities and risks that present themselves to the Australian Federal Government as the uses of the internet continue to consolidate around Web2.0 tools and functions.
We describe the opportunity Web2.0 presents to Government as Gov2.0 and I believe that Gov2.0 offers the best opportunity for a forward-thinking, future-oriented government to co-design with the citizens of this country, the government of the future: Government that in enabling, empowering and encouraging of citizens to fully participation in the society in which they live.
Foundation policies:
I am not surprised ICT is once again a leading public policy item of great interest and discussion. At the highest levels of Australian politics we are seeing an enormous shift in the mainstream use of technology, in particular through social media and online networks.
The delivery of new ICT skills and social and economic infrastructure through the Labor policies of the Digital Education Revolution (DER) and the National Broadband Network (NBN) creates a transformational environment for Australia.
I’m both professionally and personally very proud of these policies because they address two necessary foundations of capability and capacity: investing in the skills of next generation AND a universal high bandwidth network. With these transformative policy foundations in place we can begin a conversation about what we can do with the internet, with data, with our collective intellect to improve our lives in a sustainable way, take care of those in need and save our planet from the ravages of climate change.
Governments have a responsibility to provide the leadership to achieve these aspirations. Government is both the initiator of new ideas as well as responders to ideas emerging from the community. How these ideas get traction and enter public discourse is changing as internet usage grows and people take control over their sources of information and how they engage.
More Australians are engaging with the government online and everyday more people are getting their news online than any other way.
Social media tools have changed the game, as a broad demographic range of people start connecting to each other, and sharing knowledge directly, rather than relying on the government and traditional media for information.
Online communications – particularly over the past two or three years – have created a thirst for more genuine dialogue with government, for the sorts of transparent, real time and many-to-many communications that people enjoy every day with each other on social media platforms such as Facebook, Youtube or even Twitter.
Many of these social media tools are hyped up in the traditional media at the moment, and I hear people questioning their usefulness, reflecting on the banality of much of the discourse. I can tell you as someone who is actively experimenting and trying to engage through these tools, that there is a lot of value to be found, particularly when you put social media to work for a specific purpose.
Most people in my experience are more than happy to contribute meaningfully to a conversation, so long as the outcome is meaningful, which means being prepared to act upon the good advice received. It can be a risky business but, as Machiavelli says:
All courses of action are risky, so prudence is not in avoiding danger (it's possible), but calculating risk and acting decisively. Make mistakes of ambition and not mistakes of sloth. Develop the strength to do bold things, not the strength to suffer.
Machiavelli
This is a major challenge for government. So it is inspiring to see government departments and agencies have already been experimenting with social media tools, with no major disasters

TEAGUE + WWU: Vote+
Each year TEAGUE teams up with Western Washington University to help students build their knowledge of design discourse and professional practice in the discipline through a hands-on collaborative project intended to challenge current thinking and suggest new ways of looking at the world. The 2012 design brief—Access Over Ownership—inspired two concepts: Vote+ & Local Kitchen.
ABOUT Vote+
Vote+ is a suite of connected tools that aims to increase US citizen participation in the democratic process by making the activity more personal, convenient, secure and engaging.
Everyone has an opinion. Unfortunately those opinions don’t always translate in to votes. In the US it’s estimated that only 50% of the nation votes. There are a number of factors that inform low voter turnout, access to information, to forms, and a host of other barriers. But in an era where social networks, twitter and other online forums are a hive of activity and debate this number remains staggering.
As the success of social media illustrates, having an opinion isn’t the problem. Taking action that communicates that opinion is. Vote+ facilitates this by tackling 4 opportunities for improvement: Making it personal. Making it convenient. Making it secure. And driving participation by making the end to end experience engaging.
The big shift was to reframe voter engagement by leveraging local issues to attract voters into the process. Vote+ provides individuals the tools they need to document and broadcast local issues they care about (in this case a pot hole). Connected tools and online services let you track interest in your cause as others weigh in and help advance it toward regional ballots and measures. Activity is also tracked by dynamic ledger boards which are easily installed at community gathering spots like cafes, malls and grocery stores.
Watching issues advance from the local to county and state level pulls community members into the process and can spark interest in the general electoral process. Each ledger boards provides localized information in easy to read graphic brochures that make local politics understandable. A key feature of the Vote+ brochure is the Values Template, a smart solution that lets you quickly identify candidates from across party lines that share your concerns.
Time needed and access to polling sites is frequently cited as a key barrier to voting. Vote+ removes those barriers by providing tools and safety measures that greatly expand the number of serviceable voting sites available. Onsite vote handling is managed through dedicated scanners that digitally encrypt voting records and provide voters a printed receipt with a unique reference code, which can be verified online to ensure accuracy.
By making voting more personal, convenient, secure and engaging, Vote+ aims to lower barriers that have traditionally made participation in the electoral process unappealing and inconvenient. In an age that has witnessed the Arab Spring and the Occupy Movement, Vote+ aims to reorient community interest into mainstream participation in the mother of all social apps: democracy.
