ICT: Getting Connected to Sustainability
Appropriate information and communications technologies can facilitate sustainable development in developing nations by improving the flow of information in sectors such as healthcare, education, and business. By placing these tools in the hands of struggling populations, you empower them with tools to solve their own problems and rise out of poverty, instead of simply making them dependent on aid. Let's close the digital divide...

ICT MxR Lab's Response to Google's Gmail Motion
This morning, Google introduced Gmail Motion, allowing users to control Gmail using gestures and body movement. However, for whatever reason, their application doesn't appear to work. So, we demonstrate our solution - the Software Library Optimizing Obligatory Waving (SLOOW) - and show how it can be used with a Microsoft Kinect sensor to control Gmail using the gestures described by Google. This project uses OpenNI coupled with FAAST and was made by Evan Suma and the folks at Mark Bolas' MxR Lab at the USC Institute for Creative Technologies. Download FAAST for free and try it at projects.ict.usc.edu Learn more about USC ICT at ict.usc.edu

Woeser: Voice of Tibet (ICT Panel Discussion)
Despite China's tight control over information flow within its society, a growing number of Tibetan literary elites are playing an important role writing, blogging and interacting with the Chinese populace, voicing their minds through stories, poems, and blogs. The focus of our discussion today is Tsering Woeser, who is at the forefront of this movement, speaking, blogging and constantly challenging Chinese authorities, fighting hackers, arrests and detention. She remains unemployed, her blogs shut down, and her movements restricted but yet she has become one of Chinas greatest woman writers. Our panelists today will speak of her life in context with this new movement of Tibetan literary elites and the struggles that they have to overcome everyday.

Live 3D Teleconferencing from USC ICT
Debut of a Live 3D Teleconferencing system at ASC2008 on Dec. 1, 2008 by the Graphics Laboratory from the University of Southern California's Institute for Creative Technologies. The participant is scanned in real time in 3D using structured light and the geometry and texture is transmitted in real time to a spinning mirror with high speed video projection, resulting in a hologram-like 3D image of the person speaking. Ten Myths of ICT for International Development
Ten Myths of ICT for International Development Speaker/Performer: Kentaro Toyama, Researcher, School of Information, UC Berkeley Abstract: The past decade has seen incredible interest in applying information and communication technologies for international development, an endeavor often abbreviated "ICT4D." Can mobile phones be used to improve rural healthcare? How do you design user interfaces for an illiterate migrant worker? What value is technology to a farmer earning $1 a day? Interventionist ICT4D projects seek to answer these kinds of questions, but the excitement has also generated a lot of hype about the power of technology to solve the deep problems of poverty. In this talk, I will (1) present several myths of ICT4D that persist despite evidence to the contrary, (2) offer a theory of "technology as amplifier" which explains the gap between rhetoric and actuality, and (3) provide one key recommendation for successful ICT4D interventions. My hope is to temper the brash claims of technology with realism about its true potential. Bio: Kentaro Toyama (www.kentarotoyama.org) is a visiting researcher in the School of Information at the University of California, Berkeley. He is working on a book that argues that increasing wisdom - knowledge, virtues, and actions that generate well-being - should be the primary goal of global development activity. Until 2009, Kentaro was assistant managing director of Microsoft Research India, which he co-founded in 2005. At MSR India ...
