In 2007, the Lords Resistance Army (LRA) raided Lainya County in Central Equatoria State in Southern Sudan. The rebel group employed their standard tactics by terrorizing the villages, burning huts, and abducting children. Steven Taban was one of the boys abducted by the LRA, he was 18 years old. He was trained in the jungle and became a member of the Lords Resistance Army (LRA) Steven mastered the brutal methods of the LRA; killing, abducting and terrorizing villages, I became one of them said Steven. Rescuing the Peace in Southern Sudan
www.oxfam.org.uk Five years after the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) was signed, Sudan is once again at a crossroads. The next 12 months with landmark elections and a referendum where southerners will decide whether they want to remain part of a united Sudan or secede will be critical. There are fears that unless the international community acts now, Sudan could once again face serious instability. A new report from Oxfam calls for immediate action to bolster the fragile peace process. Last year saw a major upsurge in violence in southern Sudan, with more than 2500 people killed and over a quarter of a million displaced. In December 2009, Oxfam spoke to communities living in Western and Central Equatoria and Lakes State, who have faced violence and displacement. www.oxfam.org.uk

"As a matter of fact, we are in the most critical time in the history of our country, those who have just arrived will certainly be able to register, those who are eligible will be able to register so that they can participate in making ...

MaximsNewsNetwork: SOUTHERN SUDAN - WORLD AIDS DAY & HIV TESTING (UNMIS)
MaximsNewsNetwork: 01 Decemberr 2010 -- UNMIS; Southern Sudan -- Southern Sudan marked this year's World AID Day with an HIV testing and counseling campaign throughout Central Equatoria state. In Juba the capital of the semi-autonomous South, mobile HIV testing centers were set up hoping to mobilize communities to access free testing; over the last four years, there has being an increase the HIV prevalence rate in the South from 2.6 percent in 2006 to 3 percent today. Southern Sudan has experienced relative calm since the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) that ended more that two decades of war with the north in 2005. With the end of war, the South opened its boarders for movement and booming business with its neighbors. The six-day HIV testing campaign provides people the opportunity to know their status and increase their knowledge of the disease. About 300000 southern Sudanese are living AIDS. The United Nations through UNDP's Global Fund has allocated (USD) $45 million dollars for activities on HIV / AIDS and Tuberculosis in the South. UNICEF also has centers in 20 of the most remote areas of southern Sudan to help prevent mother to child transmission of the disease. Next year will mark the 30th anniversary of the AIDS epidemic. In his message for the World AIDS Day, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon had this message: "Three decades into this crisis, let us set our sights on achieving the "three zeros" - zero new HIV infections, zero discrimination and ...
