Mumbai's Slums—the Real Scene Behind "Slumdog Millionaire"
This is Dharavi, Mumbai's largest slum, and it's about to change forever. Once a mangrove swamp on the edge of Mumbai, more than one million people now live in these five-hundred-and-fifty acres. The residents of Dharavi are representative of India's larger poverty problem. This Stanley Foundation video was filmed in April 2008.

Africa's Largest Slum: Kibera
Kibera is located in Nairobi, Kenya. Kibera is known as an illegal settlement, and is therefore not included in Nairobi's public services. Over 1 million people are not receiving the healthcare, schools, city cleanup, adequate restrooms, etc., because they are part of an "illegal settlement." People in Kibera live in 12ftx12ft homes. These homes house up to 8 people or more. At any one time, 50% of all women 16-25 years old living in Kibera are pregnant. Most of these pregnancies are unwanted, resulting in abortions, but not in clinics of course. Here are some websites you can visit and donate to to help the people of Kibera. kiberakidscenter.com redrosechildren.blogspot.com www.globalgiving.com canada.amref.org www.hopetoshine.org

Charles Leadbeater: Education innovation in the slums
www.ted.com Charles Leadbeater went looking for radical new forms of education -- and found them in the slums of Rio and Kibera, where some of the world's poorest kids are finding transformative new ways to learn. And this informal, disruptive new kind of school, he says, is what all schools need to become.TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes. Featured speakers have included Al Gore on climate change, Philippe Starck on design, Jill Bolte Taylor on observing her own stroke, Nicholas Negroponte on One Laptop per Child, Jane Goodall on chimpanzees, Bill Gates on malaria and mosquitoes, Pattie Maes on the "Sixth Sense" wearable tech, and "Lost" producer JJ Abrams on the allure of mystery. Jam Session 2.0
We put together a virtual "jam session" with musicians from all over the world! Music was inspired by Galt MacDermot's amazing "Coffee Cold". Handsome Boy Modeling School (Prince Paul and Dan the Automator ) flipped that song with J-Live and Roisin Murphy from Moloko and called it "The Truth".
It's AMAZING what you can do nowadays!
Lyrics
Dumbfoundead
A kid at the pawn shop just bought his first drum machine,
From the slums, but them buttons will take him to another kingdom
A woman humming in a kitchen in brazil, while 50 tenants listen by
sticking their heads outside the window sill, this shit is real, hear
the sounds across the land, no name brands, woman and man jam on pots
and pans, a musician with lost dreams, sitting on concrete, playing
his heart out on missing guitar strings, street performers for a
quarter put on the show of there life, an emcee gets put on the spot
rocks it and tears up the mic, the human instrument, reaching
continents in long distances, no need for sophisticated systems for us
to listen in, countries at war, expressing hate through there
aggression. while two musicians on each side are having a jam session,
whether both em know it or not, they are collaborating. You never know
which way your music is navigating,
Esna
Sing your heart out let your soul be heard
Move to the rhythm to the groove of the drum beats
Chill to the lines disappear to the moment
Fly away persuade all the madness
Just bounce just sway just listen
Herbal T
La música es un sonido supersónico
y es por eso que no creo lo que leo en el periódico
presenta un mundo dividido y tóxico
pero ahora por los cables fiberópticos
yo me comunico, así el mundo se pone chico
si no me entiendes yo te lo explico
whether you in the Bronx and you like to spit bars and rock clubs
or Mumbai playin sitars and tablas
the music is a way we escape, heal and grow
and you aint gotta speak the language if you wanna feel the flow
olha só rapaz, a gente vai a gente vem
mas o ritmo é coisa todo mundo sempre tem
tudo bem, faço música com colaboradores globais
utilizando piano voces tambores e mais
es un laso que nos une hasta el infinito
the rhythms in us it travels wherever we go
Esna
Just let the music take you let your mind take you
Way to find a way to need a way to a brighter day
Don't let it stop in you don't let it die in you
Breath just breath
Just fly away persuade all the madness
Just bounce just sway just listen
Dumbfoundead
Across the seas I hear piano keys playin, translating languages
through the rhythms in beats bangin, a universal exchange, of personal
pains and joys, it started with a verse, each person just came and
joined in, some are complete strangers, some only teenagers, all of us
creators, , we are the dreammakers, internationally transmittin
through bandwidth, passin this bands passion so the masses can jam
with us, all are invited to play, none are required to pay, let the
virus spread, inspire heads, go pirate away, this is that free music,
for people who need music, just listen and breathe to it, I hope that
you feel movement, different souls around globe, connected through
sound makin, they set the foundation now we take it to groundbreakin,
everybody played there part and now we have one song, and this is how
an unheard voice becomes strong
Esna
Sing your heart out let your soul be heard
Move to the rhythm to the groove of the drum beats
Chill to the lines disappear to the moment
Fly away persuade all the madness
Just bounce just sway just listen

Agbogbloshie is a suburb of Accra, Ghana known as a destination for legal and illegal exportation and environmental dumping of electronic waste (e-waste) from industrialized nations. Often referred to as a "digital dumping ground", millions of tons of e-waste are processed each year in Agbogbloshie
Processing electronic waste presents a serious health threat to workers at Agbogbloshie. The fumes released from the burning of the plastics and metals used in electronics are composed of highly toxic chemicals and carcinogens. Workers often inhale lead, cadmium, dioxins, furans, phthalates and brominated flame retardants.
Exposure to these fumes is especially hazardous to children, as these toxins are known to inhibit the development of the reproductive system, the nervous system and the brain.
This short Mood-Documentary is recutted from the material of the german Documentary "Die Kinder der Toxic City" which i shot this year as a second dop with Jürgen Steiger as the first dop with Christian Bock
-director- in Ghana.

BOUNCING CATS film trailer
FILM SYNOPSIS
Uganda has been called one of the worst places on earth to be a child. In the South, children face the threat of poverty and disease. In the North, these threats are enflamed by a brutal, mindless war inflicted by the Lord’s Resistance Army (L.R.A.) that has divided families, displaced millions, and led to the abduction and mutilation of tens of thousands of children resulting in the deterioration of identity and culture.
Bouncing Cats is the inspiring story of one man’s attempt to create a better life for the children of
Uganda using the unlikely tool of hip-hop with a focus on b-boy culture and breakdance. In 2006, Abraham “Abramz” Tekya, a Ugandan b-boy and A.I.D.S. orphan created Breakdance Project Uganda (B.P.U.). The dream was to establish a free workshop that would empower, rehabilitate and heal the community by teaching youth about b-boy culture. Based in Kampala, Uganda, B.P.U. has recently expanded to include permanent classes in Gulu, Northern Uganda. Abramz teaches classes three times a week to more than 300 kids from all parts of the country. Many of the children are homeless, victims of war and poverty, and few can afford proper schooling yet they walk from miles away to attend the B.P.U. classes. As Abramz says, “This is where many people’s pride is. It’s a skill that no one can take away from us.”
Crazy Legs, one of the founding members of the seminal Rock Steady Crew visited Uganda after receiving an invitation from Abramz to teach b-boy classes. What he discovered upon his arrival was both heartbreaking and inspiring. Traveling throughout Uganda, from the southern slums to the war-torn North, Crazy Legs encountered a passion for hip-hop and desire to learn amongst the most squalid conditions.
Bouncing Cats follows Abramz, Crazy Legs, and Breakdance Project Uganda on a journey to use hip-hop culture for positive social change. The film features narration by Common and interviews with Mos Def, Will-I-Am, and K’Naan.

Slum Stories: Cambodia - Sihanoukville
'Life has no meaning when you can barely survive', says Prang Nan from Sihanoukville, Cambodia. She lost a lot of her possessions when she was forcefully evicted in 2007. Apart from her, around 107 other families were forced to leave their homes by the army and the police, who didn't hesitate to use violence. This video is part of the Amnesty International www.SlumStories.org project. An online videochannel about the life in slums in different parts of the world. All videos can be watched with English, Arab, French, Spanish, German and Dutch subtitles.

MEGACITY SLUMS
The spread of Indian metros has led to fears of uncontrolled urbanisation; and an estimated 50 metro cities by the turn of the century. In existing metros, nearly 40% of the population is below the poverty line. Living in degraded circumstances are migrants like Bipin Kumar, who sells gas masks in Delhi. Urbanites like Bipin both compound, as well as provide a solution, to the problems of an over-populated metropolis.

A Slum Insight
From johnrnelson.net follow me on http When you think of poor what do you think of? Those that can't afford a car? Those that don't have cable? How about those that don't have water? or those that have to catch their meal? Please watch this video and take a second to think. What could 1% of your income do for these people? What do you spend 1% of your income on... coffee, lottery tickets, soda, a bag of chips? I do not ask you to support and carry the poor. I do not ask you to change your way of life. In fact I do not ask anything of you. What matters, is what you ask of yourself and you do with that answer.
