Van Diemen's Land [Celtic Chieftan]
definition: Van Diemen's Land, the island south of mainland Australia, is now known as Tasmania. In the 1800s it was a penal colony to which the British government sent convicts. Some of the Irish rebels tried for their parts in the Young Ireland movement of the 1840s were sent to Van Diemen's Land. The transportation of convicts to Van Diemen's Land ended in 1853, the same year the colony changed its name to Tasmania, as an apparent to escape the stigma of having been a penal colony. Transportation of convicts to Australia and Van Diemen's Land was protested by the Australian Anti-Transportation Movement in the mid-1800s. The practice of transportation as a punishment was finally stopped in 1867. In popular culture: Van Diemen's Land was mentioned in a number of Irish folk songs as it was often the destination of Irish rebels convicted by the British. In the modern era, the Irish rock band U2 featured the song "Van Diemen's Land" on the 1988 album Rattle and Hum.

Lo he intentado.

43. Moreton Bay (Traditional Australian)
Another Australian song about transportation, originally known as "The Convict's Lament on the Death of Captain Logan." For those who don't know Australia's history, it began as a penal settlement for English (and Irish) criminals whose crimes were so petty that they managed to avoid being hanged. For example they may have stolen a loaf of bread to feed their family. Moreton Bay, in Queensland, was one of the worst penal colonies. Between 1825 and 1830 it was run by Captain Patrick Logan, notorious for his cruel and sadistic treatment of the prisoners. Records kept by one of the prison clerks show that, from February to October in 1828, Logan ordered 200 floggings with over 11000 lashes. He was killed by Aborigines in 1830 while he was surveying the Upper Brisbane river. When his body was brought back to Moreton Bay, it is reported that the convicts "manifested insane joy at the news of his murder, and sang and hoorayed all night, in defiance of the warders." The origins of the song are unclear but it may well date back to the time of Logan's death. Bushranger Ned Kelly quoted some of the lines in his "Jerilderie Letter" of 1879. A bushranger, Jack Bradshaw, who wrote a "True History of the Australian Bushrangers" (1911) and "Twenty Years of Prison Life in the Gaols of NSW" attributed the song to Francis MacNamara (Frank the Poet), who spent years in various Australian penal settlements. Like many Australian songs, this one uses a traditional Irish tune. It is a variation ...

AUSTRALIA- PART ONE...AUSTRALIË- DEEL 1
VERTALING IN NEDERLANDS ONDERAAN********************************Australia, officially the Commonwealth of Australia, is a country in the southern hemisphere comprising the mainland of the world's smallest continent, the major island of Tasmania, and numerous other islands in the Indian and Pacific Oceans.N4 Neighbouring countries include Indonesia, East Timor, and Papua New Guinea to the north, the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, and New Caledonia to the north-east, and New Zealand to the south-east. For around 40000 years before European settlement commenced in the late 18th century, the Australian mainland and Tasmania were inhabited by around 250 individual nations[7] of indigenous Australians.[8] After sporadic visits by fishermen from the immediate north, and European discovery by Dutch explorers in 1606,[9] the eastern half of Australia was claimed by the British in 1770 and initially settled through penal transportation to the colony of New South Wales, founded on 26 January 1788. The population grew steadily in the following years; the continent was explored, and during the 19th century another five largely self-governing Crown Colonies were established. On 1 January 1901, the six colonies became a federation, and the Commonwealth of Australia was formed. Since Federation, Australia has maintained a stable liberal democratic political system and remains a Commonwealth realm. The population is just over 21.3 million, with approximately 60% concentrated in and around the ...
