The Fortune 500 is an annual list compiled and published by Fortune magazine that ranks the top 500 U.S. closely held and public corporations as ranked by their gross revenue after adjustments made by Fortune to exclude the impact of excise taxes companies incur.^[1] The list includes publicly and privately-held companies for which revenues are publicly available. The first Fortune 500 list was published in 1955.

Wal-Mart was the largest company on the list in 2007 and 2008. ExxonMobil was in second place^[2] in 2007 and 2008, but overtook Wal-Mart in 2009.^[3] Wal-Mart once again regained the top spot in 2010. One should note that the revenue and profit numbers are for the year previous to the named year: therefore the 2010 list ranks companies by 2009 revenues.

Although the Fortune 500 list is the most familiar one, similar gross revenue lists of the top firms range from the highest ranking Fortune 100 including the top one hundred to the broader ranking Fortune 1000 that includes the top thousand firms. While the membership on the smaller lists are somewhat stable, the ranking on the lists may change over time, depending upon revenues and often, because of mergers among firms already listed.

The original Fortune 500 was restricted to companies whose revenues were derived from manufacturing, mining, or energy exploration. At the same time, Fortune published companion "Fortune 50" lists of the 50 largest commercial banks (ranked by assets), utilities (ranked by assets), life insurance companies (ranked by assets), retailers (ranked by gross revenues) and transportation companies (ranked by revenues). These have been consolidated into one single list, so the Fortune 500 as it exists today includes companies that in previous years would have been on one of the "Fortune 50" lists.

Brian Mason (born October 12, 1953) is a Canadian politician and current^[update] leader of the Alberta New Democrats (NDP). Mason was first elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta for Edmonton-Highlands-Norwood in a 2000 byelection, and his career in politics spans more than 20 years.

Mason has lived in Edmonton-Highlands-Norwood for over 20 years. He and his wife Karin have two sons, Peter and Alex.

Early political involvement[link]

Mason first became politically active in the mid-1970s while studying political science at the University of Alberta. He served as executive director of the Federation of Alberta Students from 1977-79. Upon leaving university Mason began working as bus driver with the Edmonton Transit System.

Municipal politics[link]

He re-entered politics in 1989 with a dynamic campaign running for Edmonton city council in Ward 3. Mason's campaign came on the heels of a legal challenge he mounted against a provincial law forbidding municipal employees from running as candidates in a civic election unless they resigned their position with the city.

The legal challenge was unsuccessful, however Mason was elected city councilor for Ward 3 in October 1989. Shortly after the election the law Mason challenged was repealed, and municipal workers in Edmonton are today allowed to run for civic office without resigning their positions. Mason remained on city council until 2000.

Provincial politics[link]

In 2000, following the mid-term resignation of the then leader of the New Democrats Pam Barrett of MLA Edmonton Highlands, Mason left city council and ran for the NDP in the ensuing by-election. He easily held the Legislative Assembly seat and was re-elected in the 2001 provincial election.

Mason was appointed the role of interim party leader for the NDP following the resignation of then leader Raj Pannu in July 2004. He became the official leader of Alberta's NDP on September 18, 2004, following a vote at the party convention.

Mason held his seat during the provincial election in 2004, which saw the caucus welcome the return of former leaders Pannu and Ray Martin, along with newcomer David Eggen. In the provincial election of 2008 Mason again retained his seat, and was joined in caucus by newly elected NDP MLA Rachel Notley from Edmonton-Strathcona, the seat previously held by Pannu.

During his tenure as a Member of the Legislative Assembly, Mason has become the outspoken champion of issues such as:

• Protecting public health care and long-term care
• Defending senior citizens
• Diversifying Alberta's economy
• Refining more bitumen in the province
• Banning political contributions from corporations and unions (like what has been done federally)
• Denouncing PC electricity deregulation
• Increasing education funding
• Regulating automobile insurance rates

Provincial public consultations[link]

In recent years Mason has hosted various community meetings around the province of Alberta. In 2009, Mason hosted a Round Table forum to discuss provincial budget concerns with a wide cross-section of Albertans. In 2009 and 2010, Mason hosted two provincial tours, each visiting several Alberta communities.

The first tour took place in September 2009, with the public forums focusing on health care concerns, and resulted in the publication of the What People Want report. This report included more than 35 recommendations for health care reforms that would protect public services and improve the general health of Albertans.

The second tour took place in May 2010, where the NDP again held public consultations. This time they invited Albertans to discuss concerns over the future of Alberta's energy economy and environment, as well as the erosion of public health services including long-term care.

Donald "Donny" Deutsch (born November 22, 1957)^[1] is an American advertising executive and television personality.

He is the former host of the CNBC talk show The Big Idea with Donny Deutsch (2004–2008). The television audience first became familiar with him on February 11, 2005, when he appeared^{[clarification needed]} on NBC's reality-television series The Apprentice hosted by Donald Trump.^[2]

Early life and education[link]

Deutsch was born to a Jewish family in Hollis Hills, a neighborhood in the Queens borough of New York City, New York. He attended the Martin Van Buren High School, located in the nearby Queens Village neighborhood; Deutsch later attended the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.^[1]

Deutsch is the chairman of Deutsch Inc., an advertising agency founded by his father, which he sold to the Interpublic Group of Companies in 2000 for US$265 million.^{[citation needed]}

In addition to his work on The Big Idea with Donny Deutsch, Deutsch has appeared as a regular guest on MSNBC's morning talk show Morning Joe.

In 2000, he married Stacy Josloff, whom he later divorced. Deutsch's former girlfriend, Amanda Zacharia, gave birth to their daughter, Daisy, in 2007.^[3]

Deutsch purchased a five-story property in New York City for $21 million and reportedly spent another $20 million on renovations in 2006.^[4] Deutsch also purchased a $29 million home on Long Island, New York.^{[citation needed]}

Ursula M. Burns (born September 20, 1958) serves as Madam Chairman (or Chairperson) and CEO of Xerox. She is the first African-American woman CEO to head a Fortune 500 company.^[1] She is also the first woman to succeed another woman as head of a Fortune 500 company.^[2] In 2009, Forbes rated her the 14th most powerful woman in the world.^[3]

Early life[link]

Burns was raised by a single mother in the Baruch Houses, a New York city housing project.^[1] Both of her parents were Panamanian immigrants. She attended Cathedral High School, a Catholic all-girls school on East 56th Street in New York. She then went on to obtain a bachelor of science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Polytechnic Institute of NYU in 1980 and a master of science in Mechanical Engineering from Columbia University a year later.^[4]

Career at Xerox[link]

Burns first worked for Xerox in 1980 as a summer intern and joined a year later after her master's degree. She worked in various roles in product development and planning throughout her 20s. Her career took an unexpected turn when in January 1990 Wayland Hicks, then a senior executive, offered her a job as his executive assistant. Initially fearing that this would be a dead-end job, she accepted and rose through the ranks becoming executive assistant to then chairman and chief executive, Paul Allaire in June 1991 and eventually becoming vice president for global manufacturing in 1999. In 2000 she was named a senior vice president and began working closely with soon to be CEO Anne Mulcahy in what both women describe as a true partnership. She was named CEO in July 2009 succeeding Mulcahy, who remained as chairwoman until May 2010.^[5]

Community activities[link]

Burns serves on numerous professional and community boards, including American Express, Boston Scientific, FIRST, National Association of Manufacturers, University of Rochester, the MIT Corporation, the Rochester Business Alliance and the RUMP Group.^[4]

She will be the Commencement speaker at MIT's 2011 Commencement, which is also the conclusion of MIT's 150th anniversary celebration.^[6] She will also deliver the 2011 Commencement address at the University of Rochester.

She was the 2012 Commencement speaker for Xavier University of Louisiana's May 12th Commencement ceremony, where she also received an honorary degree, one of the institutions highest honors.

Burns married Lloyd Bean, who also worked at Xerox,^[7] and she resides in Rochester, New York. She has a daughter Melissa (born c. 1992) and a stepson Malcolm (born c. 1989) who attends MIT.^[1][5]
