The Newberry Story: A Short Film

We're delighted with the result and we invite you to see the Newberry Library for yourself. About Kartemquin Films Kartemquin was founded in 1966 to produce documentaries that examine and critique society through the stories of real people and serves as a home for independent media makers who seek to create social change through film. Kartemquin has produced renowned films like Hoop Dreams and The Interrupters, and has won many major critical and journalistic prizes, including an Emmy, a Peabody, and an Oscar nomination.

Newberry Minute: Everywhere West: Daily Life Along the CB&Q; Railroad / Ginger Frere
In the 1940s, the Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy railroad began giving its company archives to the Newberry Library. Hidden in these archives were thousands of negatives created for a book project to celebrate the company's centenary in the 1950s. Ginger Frere, Reference Librarian at the Newberry Library, helped to digitize and make available online a representative sample of these photographs. These photographs provide an intimate view of the operations of the extensive CB&Q railroad and how it shaped daily life in the towns in passed through and connected. Photographs and additional materials from the Newberry's CB&Q collection will be on display in a Spotlight Exhibit from August 10 to October 16, 2010. For more information, please visit www.newberry.org More information about the CB&Q collection at the Newberry can be found at www.newberry.org The digitized archive of CB&Q photographs is located at collections.carli.illinois.edu

Newberry Minute: [Fraktur, Hanna Konigmacher, 1768] / Matt Rutherford
Matt Rutherford, Curator of Genealogy and Local History at the Newberry Library, shares an example of a fraktur, an illustrated birth "certificate" created by Pennsylvania Germans in the 18th century. This particular fraktur records the birth of Hanna Konigmacher on September 12, 1768, in Cocalico Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Documents like this help genealogists trace family relationship and situate families in a particular place and time. Part of the Klaus Stopp collection, frakturs are one of the many unique resources available at the Newberry Library for those interested in family and local history. Purchased from the principal of the fund generated by the sale of duplicate and out-of-scope materials. Title: [Stopp, Klaus, The Stopp Collection of German American Birth and Baptismal Certificates, Fraktur 241.2] Date: 1768

Newberry Minute: Book of Hours (Use of Salisbury) / Jill Gage
Jill Gage, Reference Librarian at the Newberry Library, shares a striking example of a medieval book of hours--a collection of prayers to be recited throughout the day. During Henry the VIII's reign, the family that owned this book struck out and altered parts of it after a royal decree banned references to the saint, Thomas Becket. On the 500th anniversay of Henry's coronation, this book poses interesting questions about royal authority and its reach into daily life. Newberry Minute: French Revolution Pamphlet Collections / Jennifer Thom
Jennifer Thom, the Cataloging Projects Manager at the Newberry Library, explains the importance of cataloging "hidden collections," such as the Newberry's extensive French Revolution Pamphlet Collections. Because these items are difficult to identify and locate through the online catalog and other means, they go unused, despite containing a wealth of important historical information. With support from a grant from the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR), a team of librarians and researchers will create over 20000 catalog records for these items! More information about the French Revolution Pamphlet Collections can be found at: www.newberry.org For more information about the Newberry Library's CLIR Grant: www.newberry.org

Newberry Minute: Letters to Jemima Hall, 1836-1837 (Rodgers Family Papers) / Alison Hinderliter
Alison Hinderliter, Manuscripts and Archives Librarian at the Newberry Library, discovered in some family papers letters sent in the 1830s from a slave to a freed slave, who happened to be husband and wife. Jemima Hall, born around 1810, lived with the Rodgers family in southern Illinois, and was freed some time between 1822 and 1836. In the letters, Jemima's husband, Washington, and her husband's master, LF Hall, implore her to return to Missouri to live with them. These letters suggest the countless stories that tell history from a entirely different vantage point that can be found in family collections like the Rodgers Family Papers. Title: Washington Hall and LF Hall to Jemima Hall, 1836-1837 (Rodgers Family Papers) Call Number: Midwest MS Rodgers, Box 1 Folder 15 Provenance: Gift of Mrs. WF Schweitzer (a Rodgers descendant), 1950, with subsequent donations Finding Aid: www.newberry.org

Newberry Minute: The Rival Richards!!! / Jill Gage
Acting rivalries, particularly between actors performing roles in Shakespeare's plays, were a prominent part of the 19th century theater. Jill Gage, Reference Librarian at the Newberry Library, offers a glimpse at one such rivalry between Edmund Kean and Junius Brutus Booth. Both actors portrayed Richard III at rival theaters in London at the same time. The print mocks Booth for being an imitator of Kean's and for relying on exagerated publicity in the press and mechanical clapping machines to puff up his performance. This print will be featured in the Newberry Library's Spotlight Exhibit, The Play's the Thing: 400 Years of Shakespeare on Stage from February 16 to May 1, 2010. www.newberry.org Title: The Rival Richards!!! London: SW Fores, 1817. Call Number: Case W 778 .186 #12918

Newberry Minute: French Canadians in the Midwest / Matt Rutherford and Carla Zecher
Given the prominence and importance of the French Canadian communities in New England and Louisiana, we often forget that French Canadians played an important role in building and shaping the Midwest. Matt Rutherford and Carla Zecher, co-curators of the Newberry Library's Spotlight Exhibit, "French Canadians in the Midwest," look at some of the documents from the Newberry's collection that remind us of the historically important role that the French Canadians played here. The Spotlight Exhibit, "French Canadians in the Midwest," will be on display from January 11 to March 12, 2011. For more information about the exhibit, please visit the Newberry Library's website at www.newberry.org Support for this Spotlight Exhibit generously provided by the Canadian Government and the Québec Délégation Chicago.

Newberry Minute: Calligraphy at the Newberry / Paul Gehl
Since the 1970s, the Chicago Calligraphy Collective and the Newberry have worked together to advance the study of calligraphy and to promote the art to a broader public. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Collective's annual juried show held here at the Newberry until June 25th. Paul Gehl, Custodian of John M. Wing Foundation on the History of Printing, discusses the show and the origins of the Newberry Purchase prize, which allows the Newberry to purchase an item from the show for its collection. He also highlights one of the past winners, an artists' book created by Linda Hancock, a professional calligrapher and artist from Wisconsin, and the importance of documenting the production of calligraphic art to the Newberry. Featured Item: Linda Hancock. "I believe the earth exists." From a poem by Denise Levertov.
