Journey in the Aeolian Islands
Ancient islands, forged by volcanic fire, the Aeolian Islands are the symbol of the Mediterranean; seven fascinating sisters, all different, and each one with her own magic. Dwelling of the gods of the wind and fire, site of harsh battles and cradle of remote civilizations, they hide picturesque underwater seascapes and skeletons of ancient shipwrecks. White and black, pumice and obsidian have, since the bronze age, attracted sailors from the farthest points of the Mediterranean to this setting of myths and legends

Vulcano, Aeolian islands, Sicily, Italy
(video 2005, Aeolian islands, Italy). Vulcano is a small volcanic island in the Tyrrhenian Sea , about 25 km north of Sicily and the southernmost of the eight Aeolian Islands. It is 21 square kilometers in area, rises to 499 meters, and contains several volcanic centers, including one of four active non-submarine volcanoes in Italy. The volcanic activity in the region is largely the result of the northward-moving African Plate meeting the Eurasian Plate. There are three volcanic centres on the island: At the southern end of the island are old stratovolcano cones, Monte Aria (500 m), Monte Saraceno (481 m) and Monte Luccia (188 m), which have partially collapsed into the Il Piano Caldera. The most recently active centre is the Gran Cratere at the top of the Fossa cone, the cone having grown in the Lentia Caldera in the middle of the island, and has had at least 7 major eruptions in the last 6000 years. At the north of the island is Vulcanello, 123 metres high, and is connected to the rest of it by an isthmus which is flooded in bad weather. It emerged from the sea during an eruption in 183 BC as a separate islet. Occasional eruptions from its three cones with both pyroclastic flow deposits and lavas occurred from then until 1550, the last eruption creating a narrow isthmus connecting it to Vulcano. Vulcano has been quiet since the eruption of the Fossa cone on August 3, 1888 to 1890, which deposited about 5 metres of pyroclastic material on the summit. The style of ...

Sicily 2007 - Eolian Islands Beautiful Panarea Island
Ilove studying languages and prefer to do it locally on site, in a foreign country. After having completed several language study trips to study Spanish, it was time to learn Italian! So in April of 2007 I embarked on 3 weeks of language studies to Sicily, and I discovered one of the most beautiful spots on this planet. I spent the first week in Taormina, a gorgeous hillside town on the east coast of Sicily and went on excursions to Siracusa and Mt. Etna, Sicily's famous active volcano. All along I enjoyed student life at the local Babilonia Language School in Taormina. After week 1 I relocated to Milazzo where I joined another language school, Laboratorio Linguistico. Together with 4 other language students and 2 language teachers I embarked on a one week sailing trip through the gorgeous Eolian Islands. This was my first sailing trip and a true adventure. Luckily I had great crew mates, and studying Italian on the outdoor patio of a bar on a beautiful Mediterranean island quickly became one of my favourite activities. Then I had a few more days left and explored local gems like Milazzo, Cefalu, Catania and small villages in the beautiful interior of Sicily. And best of all, by the end of it I spoke reasonably fluent Italian at intermediate level! Sicily was a phenomenal experience -- and I am already dreaming of going back...

Aeolian Island Vulcano fumaroles & solfataras WWW.GOODNEWS.WS
goodnews.ws Video shot on the Gran Cratere della Fossa on the Aeolian Island Vulcano, Italy, 2011-06-05 around 15.30h. Fumaroles and Solfataras. Vulcano (Sicilian: Vurcanu) is a small volcanic island in the Tyrrhenian Sea, about 25 km north of Sicily and the southernmost of the eight Aeolian Islands. It is 21 square kilometers in area, rises to 499 meters, and contains several volcanic centers, including one of four active non-submarine volcanoes in Italy. The Roman name for the island Vulcano has contributed the word for volcano in most modern European languages. The Romans used the island mainly for raw materials, harvesting wood and mining alum and sulfur. This was the principal activity on the island until the end of the 19th Century. When the Bourbon rule collapsed in 1860 (see Francis II of the Two Sicilies) a British man named James Stevenson bought the northern part of the island, built a villa, reopened the local mines and planted vineyards for grapes that would later be used to make Malmsey wine. Stevenson lived on Vulcano until the last major eruption on the island, in 1888. The eruption lasted the better part of two years, by which time Stevenson had sold all of his property to the local populace, and never returned to the island. The villa is still intact.Currently, around 470 people live on the island, mainly deriving their income from tourism. It is a few minutes hydrofoil ride from Lipari and has several hotels and cafes, the important attractions being ...

Salina in the Aeolian Islands, Sicily, Italy
Italy4World.com Salina in the Aeolian Islands, Sicily, Italy Salina is an island in the Aeolian Islands north of Sicily, southern Italy. It is the second largest island in the archipelago. It is included on the World Heritage List especially because of its worth for vulcanology. Salina is lush and hilly - great for a relaxing walk. Some of the film Il Postino was shot here. Areas on the island, including the two mountain peaks, were designated as a natural reserve in 1981. Gisbert - Paradisola
About 42 years ago, Gisbert decided to be away on holiday and he still is. He dug a cave with his own hands in Filicudi, Aeolian Islands – Sicily, and he has been living in his "Paradisola" since then. His universal considerations spur us to ask important questions for a humanity that has decided to deny itself the time to dream.
