Devanagari Script Made Easy - Part 1
Deva(na)gar-i-sempre! Part 1, Take one. (Take two was much better, but wouldn't upload..) If you take our alphabet, the corresponding Dev letters are very similar, and moreover, they seem to follow a logical progression, where if you change the previous letter ever so little, you get the next one. The traditional way of teaching these letters, I find, is not helpful at all, since their order makes no particular sense to the non-linguist (namely, us). The way I show here, so long as you can remember your ABC, you should be fine. The other letters will come later, after I have found a good way of presenting them. For now, though, you should already be able to transcribe words of any Romance language in Dev script. I'll be putting stuff on www.orgsites.com/ct/learnhindi as I go along..

Full Narayana Suktam Sanskrit Devanagari English translations.wmv
This video contains all verses of the Narayana Suktam. The Optional Shanti Verse (recited at end of suktam by some people) for the Narayan Suktam is: ॐ ना॒रा॒य॒णाय॑ वि॒द्महे॑ वासुदे॒वाय॑ धीमहि । तन्नो॑ विष्णुः प्रचो॒दया॓त् ॥ ॐ शान्तिः॒ शान्तिः॒ शान्तिः॑ ॥ Credits for sources given in video. About Narayana Suktam: The Naryana Suktam, a mystical chanting that seems in continuation of the Purusha Suktam, carries a similar message and description of the Divine, naming the Supreme Divine as "Narayana" instead of "Purusha". The Narayana Suktam is considered by the Sri Vaishnava Sampradaya (tradition) as one of the Pancha (five key) Suktams. The other four are the Purusha Suktam (already uploaded by me), Bhu Suktam (uploaded), Sri Suktam and the Nila Suktam. About Source of Narayana Suktam: The Yajur Veda is divided into the Shukla and the Krishna Yajur Veda literature; and the latter is divided into four Shakhas (Branches), the most well-read of which is the Taittiriya Shaka. The Narayana Suktam is from Krishna Yajur Veda, specifically the Shaka of Taittriya-Aranyaka, Chapter 10, Verses 13.1 and 13.2. The Last Verse of the Suktam is from Chapter 10, Verse 23.1. *Taittriya-Aranyaka Text Source: sanskritweb.net

Full Aditya Hrudayam Stotram in Devanagari Sanskrit English translations.wmv
| Om Suryaya Namah || Aditya Hrudayam Stotra is a Hymn with slokas Praising Lord Surya (the Sun God). These verses are found in beginning of 105th Chapter of Yudha Kanda in the great epic The Ramayana, written by Sage Valmiki. in Mythology: Lord Vishnu in human form of an exiled prince Rama, is exhausted after long battle over many weeks with various warriors to rescue his wife - His Divine Consort Goddess Lakshmi in human form of Sita, who was earlier kidnapped by the Rakshasa King Ravana. It is now time to face Ravana who is approaching closer, looking fresh, powerful and highly prepared for a great battle while Rama is completely tired out. At this time Sage Agastya (Agasthya) approaches Lord Rama and teaches him the Aditya Hridayam Stotra. in Spirituality: The Sun is a self illumined body of radiant energy. In recognizing greatness of Sun as Clearest Manifestation of the Unseen, Formless, One God, a person gains Positive Energies, Spiritual Strength to fight negative energies, thereby gaining Jnana (knowledge) about The One God. In Sadhana (rigorous meditation), the Sun is a rare vision, a great treat for Sadhaks. Sun always indicates that Sadhak is being guided by the Power of God itself and is most assuredly on Right Path moving towards The One. For more details see slides in video.

Devanagari (Sanskrit) Pronunciation and Transliteration
Courtesy of Esoteric Learning www.esotericlearning.org Sanskrit is the classical language of Indian and the liturgical language of Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. It is also one of the 22 official languages of India. The name Sanskrit means "refined", "consecrated" and "sanctified". It has always been regarded as the 'high' language and used mainly for religious and scientific discourse. Vedic Sanskrit, the pre-Classical form of the language and the liturgical language of the Vedic religion, is one of the earliest attested members of the Indo-European language family. Today Sanskrit is used mainly in Hindu religious rituals as a ceremonial language for hymns and mantras. Efforts are also being made to revive Sanskrit by various organisations around the World; Bhuj Mandir is one such organisation. Since the late 19th century, Sanskrit has been written mostly with the Devanāgarī alphabet. However it has also been written with all the other alphabets of India (except Gurmukhi and Tamil) and with other alphabets such as Thai and Tibetan. Sanskrit has also been written with the Latin alphabet. The most commonly used system is the International Alphabet of Sanskrit Transliteration (IAST), which has been the standard for academic work since 1912. Most transliterated (lipi) scriptures published by Bhuj Mandir also follow the IAST system and so it is important that devotees understand what it is and why we must know it to fully appreciate the original language and the sounds we ...

Rig Veda Full Purusha Suktam Devanagari Sanskrit English translations.wmv
This meditatively soft authentic rendering is by the Omkar Vedic Sadhana Center and is from the album Vedic Hindu Chants. It contains entire hymn slokas in Devanagari Sanskrit lyrics with English translations. About Purusha Suktam: This Suktam is found in Rig Veda (10.90) and is considered most commonly as a Rig Vedic Hymn. But this Suktam in exact same verses is also contained in the Taittiriya Aranyaka (Krishna Yajur Veda, Taittiriya Samhita: Aranyaka Shakha, Third Prashna -- 3.12 and 3.13) as used for this video. This audio rendition is as per the Krishna Yajur Veda svaras (musical intonations). The Purusha Suktam exact same Hymn also is contained in the Atharvaveda (19.6), Samaveda (6.4) and Yajurveda (VS 31.1-6). The Purusha Suktam has been commented upon in the Shatapatha Brahmana, the Taittiriya Brahmana, the Shvetashvatara Upanishad, Mudgala Upanishad and the Vajasaneyi Samhita (31.1-6). Among Puranic texts, the Sukta has been elaborated upon in the Bhagavata Purana (2.5.35 to 2.6.1-29) and in the Mahabharata (Mokshadharma Parva 351 and 352). The Purusha Suktam is one of the few Rig Vedic hymns still in current daily usage in contemporary Hinduism like the Gayatri mantra. The Purusha Suktam is considered by the Sri Vaishnava Sampradaya (tradition) as one of the Pancha (five key) Suktams. The other four are the Narayana Suktam (all verses uploaded in another video - also containing Devanagari Sanskrit text with English translations), Sri Suktam (also uploaded), Bhu ...

Full Mother Goddess Durga Mahishasura Mardini Stotram Devanagari Sanskrit English translations.wmv
Mahishasura Mardini Stotram: This is a stotram with flowing yet ringing sounds. The stotram sounds simply wash over a listener irrespective of whether one understand the meaning or not. It is unclear when exactly and who composed this exemplary stotram, the sound of which is both soothing and agitating at the same time. Some believe this very popular stotram of Goddess Durga was written by Ramakrishna Kavi. Nothing more is known about the author. Tenali Rama was also known as Ramakrishna and he was a devotee of Durga. But there is no clear evidence that he wrote this. Some believe it is by Adi Shankaracharya who wrote this in a blitz of sudden divine inspiration. Adi Shankara was not really known as a devotee of Durga and most of his other known compositions are full of philosophical meaning and not just blissful play of sounds in praise of Gods or Goddesses. Due to its very poetic nature and repetition of words in the same stanza but with enormously different meanings, this strotram is extremely difficult to translate. Any translation reads extremely disjointed - as if the lyricist just moved from beautiful flowers to a ferocious battle between one word and the very next. It is the musical play of sounds and not meaning of the words that make this stotram truly remarkable.

Rig Veda Full Sri Suktam in Devanagari Sanskrit English translations.wmv
About Sri Suktam: Sri Suktam is a prayer to the God of Fire/Yagna (Jataveda) asking him to invoke the Goddess "Sri" and bring Her home. The Goddess is referred to in the 15 (sometimes 16 verses) in myriad ways as 'Sri' (Auspicious/Noble One), sometimes as simply 'Devi' (Goddess), at times called just 'Mother'. This Sri/Devi/Mother is the same as Lakshmi, the Goddess of Wealth. The last verse, a Shanti verse, renders Sri Lakshmi as the consort of Lord Vishnu. Sri Suktam is considered by the Sri Vaishnava Sampradaya (one of the many traditional schools of belief) as one of the Pancha (five key) Suktams. The other four are the Purusha Suktam (already uploaded by me), Bhu Suktam (already uploaded), Narayana Suktam (already uploaded) and the Nila Suktam. About Source of Sri Suktam: The Sri Suktam is from the Rig Veda Khilani (Khilanis are appendices to Rig Veda) and appears in the Baskala Shaka (Section). The Khilanis were written later at different points of time but all Khilanis nevertheless date to pre Buddhist times. The last Shanti verse of Sri Suktam associating Sri Lakshmi as wife of Lord Vishnu is considered the latest addition - dated to about 400 BC
