Almost five years ago, JMU art historian, David Ehrenpreis gathered a group of faculty from across a number of disciplines including art, mathematics, psychology and the sciences to talk about visual representation. From that gathering was created the Institute for Visual Studies, an incubator for investigating the visual world. This past year faculty from the School of Art and Art History, the School of Communication Studies, and the Institute for The Stewardship of the Natural World worked together to develop two courses focused on environmental design and the crafting of messages about the environment. In one class, faculty from interior and graphic design assigned students to study a number of campus locations that present especially difficult environmental challenges. In the process the students learned that design can be useful, it can be beautiful and it can have positive consequences.
