Japanese Companies Suspend Operation in China amid Anti-Japan Protest
Several Japanese businesses have shut down their plants and stores in China this week in the wake of the widespread protests since the weekend. Canon suspended operation at three of its four plants on Monday. Panasonic also followed the same course, shutting down three plants in Guangdong province after its plant in Qingdao was set on fire by anti-Japan protesters on Saturday. Japanese apparel retailer, Uniqlo, closes 19 outlets around the country on Tuesday. It had already closed seven stores on Monday. In addition to the temporary operations shut down, the escalating tension over the Diaoyu, or Senkaku Islands also affected business plans. Japanese electronics maker Sharp Corp. had planned a large-scale celebration to commemorate its 100th anniversary on September 8th in Shanghai, but senior executives called a stop to those plans. The territorial dispute between China and Japan puts at risk billions of dollars in investments. It could also hurt trade ties, causing mutual disruption for Asia's two largest economies.
Oil in Water
Just messing around one day, with my Canon Rebel XT DSLR.
Oil being poured into a cup of water.
Music by Bonobo // Recurring
edit 4/24 6:30am:
WOW! I'm glad everyone is liking this so much! I really didn't even put any thought into the timing or editing of this. i just went through the sequences i had, in order, and tossed some music over it. The frames are pretty much un-edited. I think I changed the white balance, and added some sharpness, and that was all.
I wish I had an actual video camera, that could capture some of the things I see, when photographing my subjects. IMO the time-lapse looks neat, but does not do it justice.
A lot of people are asking how I did this. It's pretty simple. I just put the camera on its' lowest jpeg setting, placed the camera into continuous mode, and locked the shutter down with my wired remote. The oil is being dumped into a tall cylindrical glass, with about a cup of water in it. The whole thing is lit from behind by a diffused clamp light.

Robots of Brixton
Brixton has degenerated into a disregarded area inhabited by London's new robot workforce - robots built and designed to carry out all of the tasks which humans are no longer inclined to do. The mechanical population of Brixton has rocketed, resulting in unplanned, cheap and quick additions to the skyline.
The film follows the trials and tribulations of young robots surviving at the sharp end of inner city life, living the predictable existence of a populous hemmed in by poverty, disillusionment and mass unemployment. When the Police invade the one space which the robots can call their own, the fierce and strained relationship between the two sides explodes into an outbreak of violence echoing that of 1981.

After finished "Tim Burton - a filmography", I was like a marathon man in the need to run again after the finish. I didn't win the contest but I had a lot of great feedbacks from world wide and I'm glad that the fans enjoyed it. Like all my work, I treated the subject with lot of respect.
Nowadays, that's very common, but I'm also a big fan of the TV serie Breaking Bad. Since a friend adviced me to took a look three or four years ago, I started to become very addicted to the Vince Gilligan's cook. To me, everything is great ! The scenario of course, the cast, the acting, the visual ideas, the atmosphere... Everything is just so awesome...
So I decide to just make a tribute to Walter White by making an illustration, and then it was missing Jesse Pinkman, so I made it after. Why not a bad guy ? So I made Gustavo, and etc etc. Until I had thirteen characters. From that step, I was thinking, why not to make an animation ? But I thought, only characters would be weak... And after, two filmography (Kubrick and Burton) both in the same style, I needed to create something more dynamic and rock and roll, by still keeping my style and improving my motion design skills.
Backgrounds was interesting too to create. If you take a look on the show, there are very important between each scenes. I wanted to make feel the atmosphere of the New Mexico to the viewers, with the Usa and the Mexican influence.
About the music, after listening many songs in online music store, I found that great one ! It was perfect with the atmosphere that I wanted to build. Basically, Romain Trouillet was ready to score this one because he is a big fan of the show too but he was busy on that time. If he is ok, we will work together again on the next one. Probably the last filmography, Takeshi Kitano which is almost finished on illustrations.
If you listen the lyrics, that's very interesting. I matched it with the different characters of the cast and their meaning. For example: "I lost my convictions", I added Saul, the attorney who is not every time honest. Secundo, "I lost my religion", The Salamanca cousins but a Santa Muerte, the divinity of gangster. And in the end, "I had money", Gus and Walter was interesting to put in that time, Gus with the money in the background and Walter because that's one of this motivation.
Also for the beat of the music, I tryed to find ideas too: electric poles, road line, curving line sfrom a map a little bit like the move in Guitar Hero when you do that sound but mixing with the map idea. From Albuquerque until Mexico city, I checked on a map to respect the cities and the motorway numbers ! I wish I can go one day and see the landscapes and the backgrounds in real ! You probably has the same feeling too by seeing that show ;-)
Finally, I saw a lot of other opening titles and movie clip. I tried to mix the things I like the most: Queens of the stone age - go with the flow, Dizzee Rascal - Fix up look sharp, Machete, Grindhouse, Repo Man, Walking Dead by Daniel Kanemoto, Danny Yount's opening, the website Art of Title, etc, etc...
Thanks for reading and forgive my english :)

MUSIC BY Thom Yorke
Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke describes this song as his most political work. "Harrowdown Hill," is part of Yorke's solo album, "The Eraser," which released in August 2006. After seeing the short films of Chel White, Yorke sought him out to direct his next music video.
White, who is co-founder of Bent Image Lab in Portland, OR, chose to incorporate an innovative technique that he and the rest of the Bent artists had been researching previous to this project. Dubbed Smallgantics, the technique takes footage of large objects (rivers, factories, city skylines) and makes them appear as though they are actually miniatures. In "Harrowdown Hill," Chel used aerial footage from the pacific north west to be miniaturized using Smallgantics.
Smallgantics, inspired by tilt-shift photography, took the principles inherent with using tilt-shift lenses (Lenses that sit at an angle in comparison to the film plane, creating a sloped focal plane which can at times simulate short depth of field and can distort the apparent size of subjects), and pushed them to a new level. Instead of the apparent blurriness of the subject matter being dependent on its vertical alignment in the picture, Bent broke the image up into its apparent planes of depth. So, just like in actual shallow depth of field, it is the subject's proximity to the lens that determines its sharpness.
The process involves splitting the footage up into several vertical planes that move back over the perceived z-axis, or into the image along its perceived depth. These planes are then affected with varying degrees of blur to simulate a shallow depth of field. If done right, the amount of blur increases smoothly as it moves along the planes of the image. Next, these levels of blur are animated to simulate a change in focus or to compensate for the forward movement of the camera.
Chel White's video for Thom Yorke's, "Harrowdown Hill," won Best Music Video at South by Southwest (SXSW) 2007, ResFest 10, and The Worldwide Short Film Festival. It was nominated for Best Music Video and Best Special Effects at MVPA and FutureShorts.
"The winner of this year's South by Southwest (SXSW) music video award is described as 'a quietly intense call to consciousness in an age of disinformation, preemptive war and unprecedented governmental secrecy.' Thom Yorke's 'Harrowdown Hill,' directed by Chel White, offers a visually compelling bird's eye view of some of the biggest challenges facing our society today, including global warming and petroleum consumption." -MusicVideoWire.com

Panasonics Record Loss of over $10 billion Dollars
The loss is largely due to restructuring charges and writes downs for its Sanyo Electric unit. The television and electronic industry is ruthless and competitive, Panasonic Sony and Sharp Corp expect to lose $17 billion dollars this year. The foreign rival leading the pack is South Koreas' Samsung electronics that coupled with weak demand and a strong yen contribute to the failing company. Advanced technology makes television viewing nowadays more accessible, people can watch their favorite shows on their tablets and smart phones.
