How to Clean Rain Gutters and Downspouts
Cleaning gutters is an easy job to put off, but the longer you wait the worse it can get. Thoroughly cleaning your gutters every spring and fall will help keep them working like they're supposed to. Debris can build up and cause damage to your downspouts and cause water damage to your roof. To clean out your gutters you will need: a trowel, ladder, buckets, garden hose, gutter cleaning attachment and gutter sealant. To begin, clean the downspout removing any twigs, leaves and dirt. Flush out any other debris. If the water doesn't drain properly through the downspout, there is probably a clog. Remove the end of the downspout and flush with water. If this doesn't do the trick, use the full power and force of a plumbers snake. If you notice that water sets in the bottom of your gutters be sure to readjust them so that they flow properly to the downspout. Leaks? Use gutter sealant on all joints. If there is noticeable paint damage, simply touch up with a primer. How to Build a Deck, Part 3: Building and Setting Deck Posts and Footings
There are various methods of how to set deck posts and footings which typically consists of digging below the frost line and setting posts on concrete. For these steps you will need an earth auger, post hole digger and spud bar, shovel, tape measurer, utility knife, landscape fabric, gravel, concrete, wheelbarrow, mortar hoe, a water source, deck posts and a post level. To dig posts holes either use a shovel, a post hole digger and spud bar or an auger. An auger will make this task a lot easier, but it does require some strength. Use a shovel to get rid of the excess dirt. Once you have reached the depth required by code move onto the next hole. Lay out the landscape fabric. Cut the areas for the holes, and you're ready to set the posts. Make sure your posts are long enough to reach the proper height once they are set in the ground. Mix your concrete and scoop it into the hole. Use a small post to mix the concrete, eliminating air pockets to ensure it's level. When the concrete is set, place the post in the footing and make sure it is level and against the marked line. Fill the hole with gravel. Once all the posts are filled, spread the gravel out on the fabric. Let the concrete dry for several days to ensure that the footings are strong. Attach the beams that will support the decking. You will need beams, a square, chalk line and line level, circular saw, drill with bits, a 2'x4', a 3lb hammer, carriage bolts, washers and nuts, socket wrench and sockets, screws or nails ...

How To Install A Lockset
Making sure that a lockset is secure and in good shape is key to a homes safety. Today locksets come in traditional knobs, levers, and may other styles, keypads and deadbolts. In this video there are two ways we will show you how to install a Lockset. The first will be to simply replace a lockset, and the second is to install a lockset. To replace a regular lockset, you will need a new lockset, screwdriver and a hammer. Start by unscrewing the current lockset with a screwdriver and remove the latch and knobs. Match or switch the old faceplate for the lock. Install the latch flush inside the door, insert the screws, insert the lever by aligning the holes. Insert the screws and tighten. Install the new jam, by unscrewing the old and inserting the new. Close the door, lock and make adjustments. To install a lockset, you will need all tools as needed above, but also a tape measure, square, drill, hole saw and chisel. Consider buying a Lockset template, which includes all of these tools and makes for quick and easy installation. Measure up 38" inches from the finished floor and mark a horizontal line on the door and the jam. Take the door off its hinges and set on saw horses. It will make installation easier. Bore the holes by using the lockset jig. Align the template on the door and drill all necessary holes. Remove the template from the door. For the faceplate, create a mortise with the jig, and use a chisel to remove the excess. Screw in the faceplate and latch as above ...

If you have not already measured and prepped your patio area by laying a foundation, learn how to here: www.youtube.com It is a very important when installing your pavers to make sure you have a solid and durable foundation. When working on your patio be sure to follow local building codes. Getting started you will need pavers, a rubber mallet, work gloves, a level, wheel barrow and extra paver sand. Lowe's carries a wide variety of concrete pavers and stepping stones in different sizes, shapes and colors. Whether you want the look of brick pavers, cut stone or natural stone you can customize your project to reflect your personality. When laying your pavers, customize your design, but make sure you have a good starting point to make the space symmetrical. Use a level to make sure the pavers are all balanced. If one lays lower, add extra sand underneath that paver. If one is too high, gently tap with the rubber mallet. Some pavers will need to be cut to fit. There are two ways to cut the pavers. First you will need a Diamond Blade wet saw, a hose, and a masons crayon. If you do not want to use the saw, you will need to use a chisel and hammer. To begin, mark the paver so that you know where to cut. Next use your wet saw and cut down the paver. If you are using a ...

How to Install a Garbage Disposal
New garbage disposals offer many new features, including quieter operation, increased grind capacity, and easier installation. When it is time to replace a garbage disposal, follow these step-by-step instructions that will help remove an old disposer and install a new garbage disposer. To begin, turn off power to the garbage disposer at the electrical box. If your disposer plugs into the wall, unplug it. Shut off the water lines to the sink. Before dismantling the old disposer and plumbing, take a photo of the old setup for reference in installing the new unit. Place a bucket or basin under the disposer and adjacent plumbing to catch any water. Identify the discharge tube that leads off of the disposer and disconnect it. Disconnect the dishwasher drain, if applicable. Identify the mounting collar that holds the top of the garbage disposer to the bottom of the sink. Loosen and remove the mounting collar with a disposer wrench, which is typically included with your unit. If the garbage disposer is hard-wired, lay the unit on its side and locate the electrical cover plate. Disconnect the wires, and then remove the unit. Inspect all parts that attach the garbage disposer to the sink. If in good condition, the replacement unit may be installed using these parts. If not, first loosen the mounting screws. Then, pry the snap ring out to release the mounting ring. Use a flathead screwdriver to pry off the backup flange and gasket. Remove the sink flange from above the sink. Clean ...

How to Can Tomatoes and Vegetables
Many people are taking up gardening, and an excellent way to preserve the harvest is by canning. Canning is easier than you may think, and can be a fun project for the entire family. When food is exposed to air, its also exposed to bacteria that can cause the food to spoil. Boiling food in a glass canning jar kills bacteria that may have come in contact with the food, and also creates an air tight seal to prevent new bacteria from getting into the jar, allowing food to stay fresh and edible longer. Following are instructions for canning tomatoes, one of the most popular of home-canned foods, but many other fruits, vegetables and meats can be preserved following similar steps. To begin make sure you have all equipment necessary for canning. Make sure the jars, lids and bands are not damaged. Wash the bands, lids and jars and set in a pot that is 180 degrees until the jars are ready to be used. Be sure to not let the water boil. Remove jars and lids when they are ready to be used. Fill the canner half full with water and put on the stove to a hot simmer of 180 degrees. As you begin to start canning there are a few simple steps to follow. For tomatoes wash, drain and place in a basket rack. Lower into a pot of boiling water for about 30-60 minutes or when the skins start to crack. Remove the tomatoes and immediately place in a pan of ice to help the cooling process. Once cool, peel away the skin and remove the cores. Depending on your preference you can keep the tomatoes ...
