Smyrna 1922
My grandfather, George Magarian, born in 1895, educated at the American College at Konia, Turkey and, later, director of the Konya YMCA, filmed Smyrna, Turkey, immediately after it's genocidal destruction. "The Great Fire of Smyrna is the name commonly given to the fire that ravaged Izmir/Smyrna from 13 to 17 September 1922. Turkish armed forces systematically burned the city and killed Greek and Armenian inhabitants. This is based on extensive eyewitness evidence from Western troops sent to Smyrna during the evacuation, foreign diplomats/relief workers based at Smyrna and Turkish sources." - www.Wikipedia.org The resulting 35mm edited nitrate film was hidden in my grandmother's apartment in NYC for 60 years. I was lucky to transfer it to digital before it completely disintegrates. -Robert Davidian 5 March 2008 Three years ago, I met with Fulbrighter, film maker Maria Iliou, in Washington DC to restore the film and transfer it to HD video at Colorlab. This was an initiative by Iliou & PROTEAS, funded by PROTEAS, a Greek not for profit company, that has been saving archival materials about SMYRNA and THE EXCHANGE all around the world the last 3 years. I gave them permission to include this material in their two projects, SMYRNA and EXCHANGE, that will be opening at the BENAKI MUSEUM in December 15th 2011 (SMYRNA) and February 12th 2012 (EXCHANGE) a first presentation of those images in Greece to be done by my agreement. It is a Maria's Iliou and PROTEAS initiative, funded ...

Songs of Smyrna /Izmir Greek Turkish Songs
One of the most beloved and well known songs of the Smyrna Greeks was "Ti Se Meli Esenane" ("What's it to you?"). Of the versions presented here the first three were recorded in Greece and the last two in the USA. they all differ slightly in text and rhythmic subdivisions. The later American version by Angeliki Karayianni inlcudes the line "what's it matter to you what I smoke; "Lucky Strike" or "Camel" or "Melahrino" an obvious reference to the singers American environment. The surprising jazz bepop version (thanks to Bob G for the discovery) was recorded twice by the great Slim Gaillard who grew up in Detroit, MI, home to a large and active Greek American community. Some say he was the son of a Greek father and an aFro Cuban mother. Other earlier versions recorded in the US in the 1920s but not included here are those by Marika Papagika and Kyria Amalia.

Smyrna 1922
"One of the keenest impressions which I brought away with me from Smyrna was a feeling of shame that I belonged to the human race." US. Consul at Smyrna, George Horton The Smyrna affair...has been somehow soft-pedaled and almost expunged from the memory of present day man." Henry Miller It's because of the truth of the Henry Miller statement that I commemorate Symrna & it victims by highlighting the 1978 Greek film by Nikos Koundouros called "1922", which tries to give some idea of what happened to it's Greek & Armenian population. No fictional film can convey the real horrors of what really happen there, yet even so the film is so harrowing that the only scene I can really show is this clip of where a Greek in hiding goes to hand himself over to a Turkish general. For further accounts of this all but forgotten tragedy, I recommend the Marjorie Housepian Dobkin book "Smyrna 1922: The Destruction of a City", and also the book "The Blight of Asia" written by George Horton, who was the American Consul at the time & an eyewitness to the terrible events.

The Great Fire of Izmir ( Smyrna ) . Footage 1922 ( Buyuk Izmir Yangini Goruntuleri )
The Great Fire of Smyrna was a fire that destroyed much of the port city of Smyrna in September 1922. Eye-witness reports state that the fire began on 13 September 1922[1] and lasted for several days. It occurred four days after the Turkish forces regained control of the city on 9 September 1922; thus, effectively ending the Greco-Turkish War (1919-1922) in the field, more than three years after the Greek army had landed troops at Smyrna on 15 May 1919.

Miserlou-Girls of Smyrna(Izmir) [Mix]
This is a purely Smyrna-İzmir song despite the claims refering to be an Egypt song. This song was composed by an Egyptian Musician ,Mısırlı İbrahim Efendi who was originally a Jew named Abraham Levi living in İzmir.Against uncertain opinions, this song firstly was composed in Turkish with very very high probability or in Arabic. And the song was loved a lot in that time's İzmir and translated to Greek language. And A Greek named Mihalis Patrinas who immigrated to the USA in 1908 took this song to the USA and made it famous there. After a long time,in 1960s,Dick Dale,an American guitarist made an instrumental version as Miserlou. As you can understand from the name,it was composed for an Egyptian girl,Mısırlı.Then later, this song was used a Generic music of a 1994 Hollywood producted Quentin Tarantino film,Pulp Fiction that Uma Thurman and John Travolta shared the main characters,in 1998 it was again a soundtrack for another Hollywood film,Taxi.Recently American Music group Black Eyed Peas sings this music as a new name after a century-Pump It!And on the other hand in Greece, this song was taken by the Turkish-Greek population Exchange to Pireaus by Greek immigrants from Smyrna in 1923.And for many years,it was sung by the Rebetiko groups in the Cafe Amans of Athens. In 1970s,Glykeria version made this song popular again all around Greece and in 2004,famous Greek singer Anna Vissi sang Miserlou at the opening ceremony of Olympic Games. In 2005,Athinaiki kompania gave a new version ...

Smyrna
www.fallensword.com Smyrna Smyrna (Ancient Greek: Σμύρνη or Σμύρνα) was an ancient city located at a central and strategic point on the Aegean coast of Anatolia. Thanks to its advantageous port conditions, its ease of defence and its good inland connections, Smyrna rose to prominence. The ancient city is located at two sites within modern Izmir, Turkey. While the first site, likely to have started as a native foundation, rose to prominence during the Archaic Period as one of the principal ancient Greek settlements in western Anatolia, the second, whose foundation is associated with Alexander the Great, reached metropolitan proportions especially during the period of the Roman Empire, from which time and particularly from after a 2nd century AD earthquake, most of the present-day remains date. In practical terms, a distinction is often made between Old Smyrna, the initial settlement founded around the 11th century BC, first as an Aeolian settlement, and later taken over and developed during the Archaic Period by the Ionians, and Smyrna proper, the new city moved into from the older one as of the 4th century BC and whose foundation was inspired, and perhaps also initiated, by Alexander the Great. Old Smyrna was located on a small peninsula connected to the mainland by a narrow isthmus at the northeastern corner of the inner Gulf of İzmir, at the edge of a fertile plain and at the foot of Mount Yamanlar which had seen the earlier Anatolian settlement commanding the gulf.
