Shikoku Island - Japan
Shikoku is the smallest (225 km long and between 50 and 150 km wide) and least populous (4141955 as of 2005) of the four main islands of Japan, located south of Honshū and east of the island of Kyūshū. Its ancient names include Iyo-no-futana-shima (伊予之二名島), Iyo-shima (伊予島), and Futana-shima (二名島). The current name refers to the four former provinces which made up the island: Awa, Tosa, Sanuki, and Iyo.Geography The Shikoku region, comprising Shikoku and its surrounding islets, covers about 18800 square kilometres (7259 sq mi) and consists of four prefectures: Ehime, Kagawa, Kōchi, and Tokushima. Across the Inland Sea lie Wakayama, Osaka, Hyōgo, Okayama, Hiroshima, and Yamaguchi Prefectures on Honshū. To the west lie Ōita and Miyazaki Prefectures on Kyūshū. The 50th largest island by area in the world, Shikoku is smaller than Sardinia and Bananal, but larger than Halmahera and Seram. By population, it ranks 23rd, having fewer inhabitants than Sicily or Singapore, but more than Puerto Rico or Negros. Mountains running east and west divide Shikoku into a narrow northern subregion, fronting on the Inland Sea, and a southern part facing the Pacific Ocean. Most of the 4.5 million inhabitants live in the north, and all but one of the island's few larger cites are located there. Mount Ishizuchi (石鎚山) in Ehime at 1982 m (6503 ft) is the highest mountain on the island. Industry is moderately well developed and includes the processing of ores from the important Besshi ...

Shikoku 88 Temples, Japan: Part 1, The Path
1200 km (more like 1400 km if you count a lot of wrong turns), 50 days, 4 prefectures, one typhoon, numerous blisters, human interactions and unforgettable discoveries; walking around Japan's fourth largest island of Shikoku on a visit to 88 temples was a once in a lifetime experience that I can't wait to repeat.

Journeys in Japan - Ohenro Shikoku Pilgrimage Part 1
"OHENRO Shikoku Pilgrimage Part 1: Tokushima - Pref." Feb. 14, Tue. - Bene praying - Temple 5: Jizo-ji - Mountain climbing 1200 years ago, the Buddhist saint Kukai (also known as Kobo Daishi) established 88 temples in Shikoku. Later, it became popular to make a pilgrimage, along a route around the island, visiting all of the temples. This pilgrimage is known as ohenro, and the pilgrims are called ohenro-san. This week on Journeys in Japan, Bene sets out on the first stage of her pilgrimage in Tokushima Prefecture. She has a guide with her for part of the journey: David Moreton is a college lecturer who has been studying the pilgrimage for 20 years. Together they make their way along a mountain trail that is considered one of the toughest: overcoming difficulties lie this is an essential part of the pilgrims' spiritual training. Bene finds that confronting her own self as she walks, her awareness becomes clearer. She takes in deeply the beautiful scenery she sees, and the warmth of the people she meets. Temple 1: Ryozan-ji The pilgrimage can be started at any of the 88 temples. But many people choose to start their journey here at Ryozan-ji, so it has come to be known as Temple 1 on the route. For pilgrimage items, please check this web site: www.88shikokuhenro.jp (in Japanese only) Temple 2: Gokuraku-ji The principal image in this temple is Amitabha Buddha. There is a lodge at here, where pilgrims can stay overnight. www.tv-naruto.ne.jp (in Japanese only) For worshiping ...

Ohenro -Shikoku Pilgrimage 88 -
The Shikoku Pilgrimage (Shikoku Henro) or Shikoku Junrei is a multi-site pilgrimage of 88 temples associated with the Buddhist monk Kukai (Kobo Daishi) on the island of Shikoku, Japan. A popular and distinctive feature of the island's cultural landscape, and with a long history, large numbers of pilgrims (known as henro) still undertake the journey for a variety of ascetic, pious, and tourism-related purposes. In addition to the 88 "official" temples of the pilgrimage, there are over 200 bangai — temples not considered part of the official 88. To complete the pilgrimage, it is not necessary to visit the temples in order; in some cases it is even considered lucky[citation needed] to travel in reverse order. The pilgrimage is traditionally completed on foot, but modern pilgrims use cars, taxis, buses, bicycles, or motorcycles. The walking course is approximately 1200 km long and can take anywhere from 30 to 60 days to complete. "henro" is the Japanese word for pilgrim, and the inhabitants of Shikoku call the pilgrims O-henro-san , the "O" being an honorific and the "san" a title similar to "Mr." or "Mrs.". They are often recognizable by their white clothing, sedge hats, and kongo-tsue or walking sticks. Alms or osettai are frequently given. Many pilgrims begin and complete the journey by visiting Mount Kōya in Wakayama Prefecture, which was settled by Kukai and remains the headquarters of the Shingon sect of Buddhism. The 21 km walking trail up to Koya-san still exists, but ...
