Georgian Alphabet
The Mkhedruli alphabet developed from an older Georgian alphabet known as Nuskha-khucuri between the 11th and 13th centuries. The name Mkhedruli comes from the word mkhedari which means 'of horseman'. The Nuskha-khucuri alphabet developed from the Asomtavruli alphabet. At first Mkhedruli was used only for secular writing, while for religious writings a mixture of the two older alphabets was used. Eventually Nuskha-khucuri became the main alphabet for religious texts and Asomtavruli was used only for titles and for the first letters of sentences. This system of mixing the two alphabets was known as khucesi (priest) writing. Eventually the two older alphabets fell out of use and Mkhedruli became the sole alphabet used to write Georgian. However, in the writings of a linguist called Akaki Shanidze (1887-1987) and in works written in his honour, letters from the Asomtavruli alphabet are used to mark proper names and the beginning of sentences. Shanidze's attempt to popularise such usage met with little success. The first printed material in the Georgian language, in the Mkhedruli alphabet, was published in 1669. Since then the alphabet has changed very little, though a few letters were added by Anton I in the 18th century, and 5 letters were dropped in the 1860s when Ilia Chavchavadze introduced a number of reforms.

Georgia's language- alphabet explained
georgia.travel www.facebook.com There are 33 phonemes in Modern Standard Georgian: 5 vowels and 28 consonants. The Georgian alphabet has 33 graphemes (letters) for these 33 phonemes (sounds): one grapheme for each sound. Spelling usually coincides with pronunciation. The Georgian alphabet has its own independent place among the alphabets known to the world. The oldest known inscriptions date from the beginning of the 5th century. The writing has undergone considerable changes since then. Three stages of development may be distinguished: Mrgvlovani (V-IX cent.) Nuskhuri (IX-XI cent.) Mkhedruli (XI-until now).

Mesrop invented 7 letters of the armenian alphabet. The georgian alphabet was not invented by Mesrop
The alphabet is the best invention of the humankind. Ghazar Parpeci, an Armenian historian of the fifth century writes that St. Mestrop created Armenian alphabet. Parpeci does not say that St. Mestrop created Georgian and Albanian alphabets. Why? Geogian historian Iv. Javakhishvili, who studyed Coryun`s work, claims that the creation of Georgian and Albanian alphabets is added to Coryun`s work in the sixth century. Aleksidze, the armenologist, found in the Book of Epistles the strong evidence that the statement about invention of the Georgian alphabet by Mashtots was a later inclusion in the text. Based on this evidence it was concluded that as late as in the 10th century the legend about invention of the Georgian alphabet by Mesrop Mashtots was still unknown in Armenian literature (uxtanesi 1975: 289-319). The version about Mashtots is based on the statement of Koryun that Mesrop Mashtots participated in the invention of the alphabet for the Albanians. Seemingly, based on this statement some biased Armenian scholars developed a hypothesis that Mashtots participated in the invention of the Georgian alphabet. It should be taken into account that in Koryun's original text says that the purpose of Mashtot's visit to Iberia exchange of experience in translating the Christian literature to the national languages, establishing uniform liturgy procedures, etc (and not the invention of the Georgian alphabet). The text mentioned the real historical persons, like King Bakur ...
